Fat Brain Toys Pursues “Big Break” with Facebook and American Express OPEN

Contest pits 10 small businesses against each other in quest for social media makeover

It was late in the evening as Mark Carson, co-founder of Fat Brain Toys, was catching up on some online industry trade publications when he stumbled across a contest that caught his eye. The Big Break for Small Business contest sponsored by Facebook and American Express OPEN offered winners the opportunity to get a two-day, one-on-one social media makeover at Facebook headquarters. The eight-year old toy company had a social media presence, but had yet to figure out exactly how to leverage it for commercial success.

With the contest deadline looming, Carson immediately went about entering the contest, answering three open-ended questions. Two weeks later, Carson was stunned to receive a call from an American Express OPEN representative indicating that Fat Brain Toys had been named a semifinalist.

"It was a true unexpected surprise," explained Carson. "While I was excited about the prospect of winning and the benefits it could provide for our business, I was also realistic about our odds".

As it turned out, Fat Brain Toys had beaten the odds, named one of only 10 finalist out of over 11,000 total entries in the contest. Sharing the spotlight with nine other small businesses ranging from restaurants to non-profits, Fat Brain Toys is the only toy company represented.

Based in Elkhorn, Nebraska, Fat Brain Toys is a developer of specialty toys and games, with a focus on products that are fundamentally educational in nature. Sold through specialty toy retailers, museum gift shops, and some larger chains like Borders and Hobby Lobby, their line of products have garnered a loyal following for their innovative design and sense of style.

"We see ourselves challenging the common perception of toys as simple 'kids stuff'", explains Carson. "We consider toys to be the tools of childhood - critical components of a child's development. Winning this contest would certainly help further our mission of putting great toys in the hands of our children."

Out of the 10 finalists in the competition, the top five vote-getters at http://www.facebook.com/Open will be selected as winners of the "Big Break".
