This is a great microscope for exploring the surfaces of objects (it's not intended for slides). The battery-powered LED light is high powered and doesn't generate heat in the way that an incandescent bulb does. The quality seems good. It's very lightweight, which makes it perfect for taking along in a backpack on a nature hike. I would highly recommend this microscope for elementary-age children.

Purchased this as a birthday gift for a 5 year old. It's a "toy" that he will enjoy for years. The construction and viewing quality are excellent. It's amazing how things look when magnified 20x. Adults will also enjoy this.

I bought this for my 9 year old nephew, and I'm sure that his 7 year old brother will love it, too. I haven't given it to them yet, but I put it out in the office at the Natural History Museum where I work. I've been showing a simple grouse feather to everyone who comes in, and they are all amazed at the beauty of the feather. None of them even notice the scope, because it's so easy to use, and the light helps so much. I wouldn't be surprised if the 2.5 year old twins want a chance to look through this, too! They're already trying out the spotting scope at Grandpa's house. Another reviewer mentioned that the scope is lightweight enough to take on trail, and I think I agree! How much cooler would a bog walk be if you could see the hairs on a pitcher plant or the dew on a sundew close-up? We will be writing a grant soon to but 8 of these for our classroom. I had been looking for fancier ones for our adult programs, but I don't think thats necessary any more. The only problem is, that now I (29 year old botany nerd with a masters in the Field Naturalist program) wants one for Christmas, too!

I found FatBrain a short time ago and have bought several items that my grandchildren age 8, who are twins. The just loved everything so far that I have had sent to them. The i-explore was an item that both the boy and girl could use and they love it! When my grandchildren called to thank me, My grandson had the i-expore packed up ready to take to cub scouts to show everyone. They use it all the time
