Good idea but...

The product is well made but did not hold my son's interest for more than a few play occasions. The way the letters are stored all jumbled up in one section of the box makes it hard for little ones to pick out the ones they need. Even if you spread them out on the floor, they're turned every which way and some upside down, so unless you want to turn every piece the right way to make it easier for your child to recognize, I'd say this is for older kids, 4 and up (which is what it says on the box). But at that age, I'm not sure how much fun it'll be to put letters into the letter shapes either.

Good But Room For Improvement

We own a lot of Melissa and Doug toys and have always been happy with them but this one has some room for improvement. There are a lot of letters but the choice of letters seems odd. We have 6 C's but only 1 M, N, and L (there are other letters like p & q that there are only 1 of, but you can always flip around a b or d for words like puppy). We can't spell mom -nevermind mommy. Some of the words for the tiles seem a bit odd. They are not my favorite for a beginning speller and reader (cow, duck, sock, cake, fish, car, bird, bus, cat, dog, tree, frog, hen, etc). The quality is great. I would buy it again, but wish I could get more of the letters we needed.

See and Spell a hit for 3 and 5 year old!

I bought this See and Spell for my 3.5 yr son and 5.5 yr old daughter. My daughter went about it very factually, and methodically and gave a big Wahoo! when she finished all 8 boards. She promptly flipped them all over and started on the other sides. A big Wahoo! again from her when she finished those, and she went to get her dad to show him her accomplishment! I found that flipping a few of the letters upside down or backwards helped get her thinking more.. She kept mixing up her b and d and h and n, so this may help her solidify her letters. Maybe it will help her get her "e's" facing the correct way at school! Definitely a way to make letters "REAL". My son was a hoot to watch - he whooped and hollered as he finished EVERY board! He was TOTALLY excited to play the game. I had to arrange the letters all right side up on the floor for him before he started. Only bad thing, is there is no cover to the wooden box and even though I have taken care to store the game up high when not in use, I have already found 2 letters floating around.. Wish it had any kind of cover! The kids have each asked to play with this twice in 2 weeks.. each play time lasts about 45 minutes.. high quality construction, excellent feel.

This is a good and fun product for kids learning how to spell & read. The words are simple and perfect for those just starting out. The drawback is that the letters are already carved into the wood so the child only has to match up the pieces to the carved out letter. I recommend having the letters on blocks or squares so the child actually has to spell the word rather than put a puzzle together.

My 3 year old is fascinated by letters and had outgrown his alphabet puzzle that only had one of each letter; he uses both the spelling plates and the letters on their own and is really enjoying the toy. I would definitely recommend this although I did have to buy a plastic box with a lid for storage.

I thought it was sturdy and colorful. The children seem to like it. The lid lifts off easily but it will not be good for storing long term (it does not lock down). For the two children with visual motor problems I need to spread the letters out so they could match them. Otherwise, it has been great.

I bought this for my 4 year old to help her learn to read and spell. She likes to fill in the letters and is working with Daddy to spell things that arent on the cards. She asks to get it out and use it, and we use it about 2-3 times a week. I think it was a very good purchase, and i hope to use it a lot more, and for little brother in the future.

Doug and Melissa always make quality products, and my son loves letters, but once the puzzles are mastered they are not much of a challenge to him. There are so many items on the marketplace with capital letters, that the small letters were unique and useful. It needs a bonus pack of puzzles to use the same letters, but make new words.

Purchased item for my daughter as she loves puzzles, is familiar with her letters and is learning to spell. This is another high quality product from the Melissa and Doug company. My daughter loves it. The words are common, every day beginner words. The images are attractive. The product is solid and high quality. Would recommend this product to my friends.

I bought the See & Spell puzzle as a gift for my friend's daughter who just turned 3 years old. Her mom says she loves it so much because she is able to recognize the picture and is learning each time she uses it. I am absolutely going to get one for my daughter (who is now 15 months old) for when she is a little older. I can't wait for her to explore the letters that spell what the picture is along with developing hand eye coordination through this puzzle (she loves puzzles!).

Make the set bigger. I would be willing to add puzzles and letters for longer play time. Also a case with a handle so it could be carried easily from spot to spot, or at least a lid for the letters to prevent they spilling everywhere when my 3 year old grand daughter insists on carrying it around everywhere

My four-year-old loves letters and is constantly trying to spell new things. This toy helps him to learn some words independently, helping him to feel like he can learn to read on his own. While there are a limited number of puzzles, it does provide a good starting point. I love the quality of all Melissa and Doug toys I have encountered - the wooden pieces and sturdy construction stand up well to lots of love from my children.

A good product for spelling enrichment activities. My 5 year old knows the words but it's great for him to have extra tactile practice. My 3 year old really enjoys playing the See and Spell with me. He's learned quite a bit just playing with it. I think they have similar toys in his Montessori school.

I purchased this for my 5 year old niece. She is learning to read, and already knew how to spell the 3-letter words, and a few of the 4-letter words used on the cards. She especially enjoyed using the letters to spell other words she knew "freestyle" and compose short sentences. I liked the quality of the product, but it could be improved by providing a sealed storage container for the letters, rather than just an open tray.

Apparently, these alphabet letters prefer breathing room. The manufacturer's box does lack a top. If just a tray ruins your day, don't put a lid on concerns. We contacted our customer to assist. Please visit the Returns & Exchanges center for details.

When my grandson opened this gift up at his 4th birthday party he loved it and all the little ones got excited and wanted to play with the letters and words right after it was opened. The next day he played with it for quite awhile. Once all the letters were right side up, he could find them and complete the words. I think that he will enjoy it as well as his little brother.

Bought this for my son's second birthday - he LOVES it. He's just learned his ABCs and is really into puzzles, so the combination is great. He plays with it every day, and loves identifying the pictures to go along with the words. Absolutely perfect for a preschool prep, and it seems like a game so he will sit with it for twenty minutes at a time!

My four year old daughter loves this toy. I wish it had a better way of holding the pieces so that she could see all of the letters in the box, as it is, she is taking them all out to look at to try to match the word, and I can see them getting lost fairly soon. Overall, she gives this toy a two thumbs up, but as a mom, I'm worried about it's longevity.

My 4 year old was actually excited to choose a board and finish the 'puzzle'. The boards are double sided - which I didn't realize (or didn't read the description well) when I bought it - so I was pleasantly surprised. We've recently started to focus on simple spelling words so this is the jump start we needed. Very pleased with this purchase.

The bright colors and sturdy wood construction make it very attractive and user friendly for a 4 year old boy. I also like the wooden case which neatly stores all the pieces in a strong container-only wish there was a plastic or wooden lid which secured the pieces in the container when the game is stored.

I have twin daughters that are very busy! They are beginning to learn letters and word association. This Puzzle is fabulous!! Because of the pictures, they are becoming more familiar with sight words and improving their letter recognition. After just 2 times of using it that are picking out the letter puzzle pieces telling me what letters they are finding. The best part for me is there are just enough puzzle pieces for them to share and keep them both entertained at the same time!

great learning toy! I bought it for my 2-yr old and she loves it. The only negative side is that the name plates are hard for her to get out of the box. There's no enough room around them for her fingers so we end up flipping it over and dumping everything out. Also a cover for the box would help with keeping the letters together.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is b/c it does not have a cover to contain all the pieces. Other than that, my 2 year old loves it. I pick out the letters that correspond to the board we are working on and we say the letter as she places them in the correct spot - we then review the picture and word. It is a great letter and word learning tool.

I bought this for my daughter's 3rd birthday and it was a great choice. She frequently asks to play her "letter game" and it holds her interest enough to go through all the words in one sitting. I like that the letters are different colors, so for a younger child, like my daughter, I can tell her what color the letter is that she is looking for, to limit her choices. There is at least one wooden letter for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, however, not all letters are used in the puzzles. So in order for your child to learn those letters you will have to make up your own words. That is my biggest negative of this product. I also wish that there was a cover for the box, to keep all of the contents inside without spilling when a child carries it, or to take it in the car.

I purchased this for my 4 year old niece for Christmas. She loves it and likes learning how the letters go together to spell the words. I'm also buying this for my 3 year old son. He's a little young for it, but he knows his letters and likes puzzles, so I think he'll enjoy playing with it. And hey, if he starts to pick up the concept of putting letters together to make sounds and words it's an added bonus.
The only negative is the limited number of words to spell - there should be an expansion pack!

My children have really enjoyed this new product. The only suggestion that I have is that, like some other Melissa and Doug products, there be a plastic cover to slide over the top of the wooden box in order to keep the small letters from falling out everywhere.

My grandson is just beginning to sound out words so the timing of this gift for his 3 1/2 birthday was perfect. However, as others have said, he can't do more than one or 2 at a time because there are not enough letters. The cutting of the letters makes them less than heirloom quality.

This is a great toy...my 3 1/2 year old boy played with it immediately upon opening it, spelling word after word. After each one he exclaimed, "I spelled boat!" and "I spelled cow!" It's very appropriate for this age as it uses manipulatives, but reinforces letter recognition and emphasizes those pre-reading skills.

I really love this puzzle as an educational product. I am teaching my 2 year old how to spell and thought that using a puzzle with pictures to help him make the proper associations would help. It does! He is spelling the words quite well and is even working on letter sounds. The issue is in getting him to attend to it for long periods. That will take time so I am not worried. The younger the child, the more facilitation needed to motivate play but a great product overall.

I purchased this knowing that it would be a bit much at this point, but I wanted to have my little boy hold the letters and see how they fit into their respective positions on the board. I started with the "fish" board, and he was very excited to touch and feel the board and the letters. It held his attention for about 5-10 minutes, and off he was to his next adventure. But whenever I put the "fish" in front of him -- which I've done about 5-10 times since we first got it a few weeks ago -- he gets excited still. I can't know for sure yet, but my intuition tells me that this is exactly what needs to happen, and when he's ready to take it to the next level (whatever that might be), he'll already have some idea of how it works.
I've used a similar approach with other toys, and when he reached the appropriate developmental milestones, he seemed to master the skills associated with those toys pretty quickly. (Maybe it's similar to visiting a place for just a few minutes and don't get a chance to get to know it. But the next time you're there it looks really familiar. The initial impression sets off some connections in your brain, and the next time you're there, if you need to figure out more about it, you have a slight advantage over someone who's never been there.)
So, even though it hasn't been played with very much yet, I'm glad we have it now, and I'm looking forward to seeing more pieces fall into place -- both on the puzzle boards and in my son's developing mind.
