Review for Latches Board
Posted 9/26/2008
Rating: 5

Our 19-month-old daughter loves this one. The latches are great, mounted well. The little doors that open and have critters to count is great as well. If your child is getting interested in doors and locks around the house, then they'll definitely like this activity board.

this is a great toy. My students are mentially challenged and most of them have fine motor skill problems so this is really great for them. My 5 year old had to work on a couple of the locks to figure them out. This is a great product and well worth the money I paid for it which I thought was reasonable.

Accurate, but not "appealing"
Posted 10/22/2009 by Rebecca Owens
Rating: 5

This is a great product! Not only is it excellent for fine motor practice, and fun for the child (my grandson is 18 months old), it is colorful and visually attractive. I was a preschool teacher, and my husband and I created a similar board for my classroom. The kids loved the activity, but my board was not so colorful. This one is well constructed, and my grandson will love it! He enjoys latching his carseat, his father's briefcase, and his high chair belt, so the timing of this board is perfect. I am very impressed by the level of quality of the Melissa and Doug latches board, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase other items by this manufacturer.

Favorite toy!

The Latches Board keeps my 2 yr old entertained for long periods of time and many times throughout the day, as he continually returns to it. He even tried to drag it along with us the first day it came. Although the latches are metal, which may bother parents, if they were plastic or some other material kids wouldn't be as drawn to play with it. Just like when you give them a fake phone or keys and they still insist on playing with the real thing. Some of the latches are more challenging than others, which means that they can develop mastery skills and it will be a gift they can grow with. Totally worth the money, I recommend it to all my friends. One last note, my son is very coordinated and is really into the mechanics of things, taking stuff apart, screwing things together, and so on, so I am sure kids who have similar interests will enjoy it the best, however, this is a great toy to build fine motor skills in any child.

A great idea for a puzzle. My 19 month old grandson loves it. Unfortunately, one of the puzzle pieces was closed so tightly that his father had to pry it open with a screwdriver and has to sand it down quite a bit for it to work properly.

Great toy for toddler

I got this for my 16-month old and it was an instant hit. She initially got a little frustrated at not being able to open certain latches herself, but over time, she perfected them all. The hardest to open for her was the second one (blue dogs). Parental supervision is needed for this toy, especially if the users are as young as mine because fingers can get caught easily. A great toy and I would recommend it. Great at teaching colors and numbers.

Love the board, nice size. It's bigger than a wooden puzzle but not too big. The #2 latch is a little tough, but he manages to get it. Good quality and attention-keeping toy.

Information about Latches Board

The latches board was very high quality. All of the hinges and latches were brass. My grandson is only 15 months old and the age for this toy was 3+. However, he loved opening and closing all the doors. He can learn his colors and numbers with this board as well. This is a toy he can have fun with now and grow into the latching parts as he gets older. I would recommend this toy to anyone. I was very happy with it and so was my grandson.

A couple of the latches were a little bit difficult for my grandson to open. He just turned two. It is important not to leave the board face up on the floor so no one accidentally steps on it with bare feet. He seems to really enjoy playing with it!

We bought this toy for our 3-year-old son. The learning curve at that age is pretty short. I'm not sure whether this toy will be played with often. One of the latches didn't latch properly so, in light of its simplicity, we decided to return rather than exchange it. It would probably be ideal for a 2-year-old.

Wouldn't purchase again

Rating: 2

I thought this would be a great item because she loves opening things up. However, most of the latches aren't challenging. One latch is so hard to open that I have a hard time doing it. Obviously since the board lays flat, the doors don't swing open but the doors blend together so my little one (I don't think) has even opened them. This was a great concept but didn't work for us.

This "puzzle" is very sturdy and well constructed. The colors are vibrant and engaging. My twins (31 months - boy and girl) have played with it extensively so far with no signs of slowing. This is a great toy to work on "sharing" and taking turns as each task has a defined beginning and end. Children can also play simultaneously making it versatile depending on the ages and cooperation level of the children playing. Especially nice - no pieces to lose! It is a little heavy (wood construction) if dropped on a toe so caution is advised. That said, I wouldn't change this product in ANY way. It lives up to the Melissa & Doug branding and is fabulous.

When I put the toy out for my 1yr old, she will play with it until I take it away (5min). I have to supervise her while she plays with it because it is meant for older kiddo's and there is one particular swivel latch that could pinch her little fingers. Even with older kiddo's I wouldn't let them play with it unsupervised because even an adult could pinch a finger with this particular latch. It might be bad if you don't want to teach your LO to open latches of all kinds, but that's why it's so interesting, because it looks like trouble to them I think. With all the little latches, and links it must seem interesting. I think she will enjoy it more when she get's a bit older. I put it up for time being.

My two year old (25 monnths) played with this for over half an hour when we first got it. The toy continues to hold his attention, llikely because some of the latches are easy, but some are more challenging. He also enjoys naming the animals inside each door. The toy seems heavy duty and well made, the latches very solid and make a rather satisfying "clink" when snapped into place. Great for motor skills and observation/counting.

Well worth it

The Melissa and Doug Latches Board is a great toy. My 16 month old son really enjoys the challenge of the locks, the beautiful colors of the board, and the surprise pals underneath the doors. The board is solid and though the latches seem "light" they seem durable enough for the job also. My only complaint with this toy, and is fairly commonplace with Melissa and Doug toys, is that one of the latches (the middle top latch) is very difficult to turn. M and D toys (I have a few others) sometimes put out toys that are difficult in their function. However, let me also note that any troubles I have had with M and D can easily be solved by their excellent support. I received a replacement for a different item within minutes over the phone and minimal personal information. That being said, this toy may not be the most phenomenal toy in terms of quality but on the whole, for the price, the overall quality and excellent customer service, it is definitely worth the purchase.

They are intelligently designed and I am very excited about giving the Basic Skills board to my granddaughter this coming weekend. I am saving the Latches Board for Christmas. I had finished this review box and was finishing the review scoring the Fat Brain Toy list at the bottom and had to come back up here and say that under the heading "encourages family participation" I can see Rowan's four year old sister wanting to commandeer these toys from her one and half year old sister. :-)

I would think 3 years old would be far too old to start this. The board can be used in numerous ways, as far as colors, shapes, numbers, animals, offering much more value than just the latches, My daughter said...thanks for teaching him how to get every kind of latch open thus creating a little master of escape:) This is great for fine motor skills and provides such a sense of accomplishment!

It is a great product for 18 month olds up to 4 years old. There are different abilities that can be used for any level, so as the child grows they discover new things that they can do. For example, you can start off with colors and counting and progress to opening/closing some latches to all latches.

I purchased two of these Latch Boards for my nephew's, ages 2 and 2 1/2, for Christmas. Upon opening the gift, they both yelped in excitement! Both eagerly asked for the toy to be opened, and played happily, even though there were more items to open. I thought the product was well made, and I am very happy with my purchase.

I purchased this toy along with several others for my 18 month old grandson for Christmas and some to stay at my house. This toy will be staying at Nanny's. Some of the latches were a little hard for him but with my help he enjoyed opening and closing the doors and seeing the surprise inside. This toy will last for through many grandchildren.

I was really excited to order this latches board for my inquisitive 14 month old. Although she may be a little too young to unlatch everything yet, I'm hoping that this board will keep her entertained for many more months. So I think this is a great toy for an 18 mos to 2+ year old. We were hoping that our daughter would try to unlatch this toy rather than try to un-babyproof the house...no guarantees:)

I couldn't get the board out the packaging fast enough. My 18 month old HAD to put his hands on it - quickly. The Latches Board is well made with metal latches that aren't flimsy at all. The colors are vibrant and attention grabbing. The only fault I could find - and I had to work hard - is that some of the latches, when open, can prevent some of the doors from opening completely. Obviously not a big deal - well worth the price we paid.

My daughter saw this toy in the lobby of her art class and she wanted so much to play with it but the other kids wouldn't share so I ordered it for her. She has played with it every day since it arrived! She loves opening and closing the locks and has memorized what is behind each door! Some of the locks are trickier than others but she keeps trying till she moves on or asks for help. She is 28 months and this toy is perfect for her! The item had a few scratches and dust but was still wrapped in plastic so most likely a manufacturer issue.

We haven't talked with her family since her party on Sunday but when she opened it you could tell her fingers and mind were itching to get hands on it. Our son is a little young to play with this as intended, but he is curious and plays with the easier latches. He likes the sound and I assume the ability to yank on these latches. My wife and I love the colors and sturdiness of the product as we are finding out our son is quite rough on his toys. This one seems like it will hold up for a long time.

Once my daughter gets her hands on it, she does start playing with it, and is pretty focused on it, but she's barely 18 months and this toy is probably better suited for older children (perhaps 2 or 3) who can figure out how the different latches lock and unlock the doors. Overall, though, we are completely satisfied with it, and can tell how this toy will be one of her faves once she gets to an age where she has more dexterity and can understand how it works. It does come highly recommended, if your child is between 2 and 3 years old.

This item (latches) is one of those 'once in a lifetime' purchases because its extremely well thought out and made. Sturdy - I doubt if a child could ever break it. It captured my great-grandson's attention immediately and kept him occupied for a long while as he opened and closed the latches repeatedly. (His parents weren't as enamored over the gift because it taught the child how to open latches that they had hoped would remain a mystery for a few more months!!). Highly recommend this item for children in the 2 year-old range.

I bought this toy for my 14 months child. Probably a bit early for him but he occasionally plays with it though he can't open all the latches yet. I think its time will come in a few months. The quality is rather good. Each latch is unique. But I will disagree with that it is ideal toy on long road trips or airplane flights due to its weight, the toy is rather heavy. And I would prefer the animals to have natural colouring.

My son is eleven months old and is at that age where he is getting into everything especially the things he's not suppose to! Anything that's similar to a drawer or has a lock or handle on it, he's just amazed by. So of course the latches board is perfect! It enables him to open and shut all the latches, and keeps us happy to cause he isn't always messing with all the other latches around the house trying to get into them.

I really like the toy. My grandson plays with it a lot. loves working the latches and pointing at the pictures. Keeps him very busy. He is 18 month old. I feel it keeps his interest really well for his age. The only thing I would change is the order of the latches, for the following reason. The latch in the bottom right hand corner when opened catches on the middle one. He has a lot of trouble and frustration with this one for that reason. A couple of the hinges on the doors are bent already. I know it is happening because he pushes on them hard, but I was wondering if a stronger hinge could be used. Overall it is a great toy.

I purchased this for my 2 yr old daughter for Christmas. Though she hasn't opened it yet, I know for sure it will be a hit. She goes to a private sitter during the day with a few other kids. This puzzle is attached to a wall in the room and all of the kids love, love, love playing with it. I have noticed her playing with it several times. When I pick her up, I am told they usually have to set time limits so that each child gets their turn. They enjoy it so much. So why not get her a gift that I know already keeps her attention? And better yet she will have one of her own!

It's at great toy to interact with your tot! Teaches them how to open latches, locks etc... But, it also teaches them words "What's behind the locked doors?" Yellow Fishes, how many? 6 So they learn colors, objects and a few numbers! Its' also visually appealing!

I love this toy! Two year old grandson is obsessed with learning the latch works. He is learning colors and to count, so the colored doors and surprise animals behind them is perfectly engaging. His 4-year old sister is also very interested in this toy and the children can each work on a latch while sharing the board. It is well constructed, beautifully thought out.

This was purchased for our two year old son's birthday and while he does really like it, he may have benefitted from being six months older. He's always been good at "getting into things" and is catching on quickly though. Our four year old daughter is the one who REALLY loves it but it's also too easy for her at this point. The construction of the product was of very good quality and will hold up through many hours of play. I would definitely recommend this product. It teaches dexterity, problem solving and counting in a fun way!

My 13 month old is fascinated by all of the doors and latches, he hasn't learned to latch on his own, but is able to open almost every door independently, the colors and numbers reinforce other things that he is being taught and he doesn't seem bored easily with this toy. In additional to motor skills, the toy incorporates reading, colors and numbers. This toy offers multiple levels of learning’s at different points in a child’s life. I can’t wait to see the additional light bulbs that come on as my son continues to plays with this toy.

I gave the Latches Board to my two little grandsons, ages 1 and 3. They loved opening and closing the doors and learning how to work the different latches. Obviously, the three-year-old could work it best, but the one-year-old was fascinated with it, and over the next several days he spent hours moving the latches back and forth. The board is sturdy and well-made and has no small parts that can be lost!

None of the latches is too tight or difficult to manipulate. This is a great way for kids to learn what to do when they meet this kind of locking mechanism in the real world.

I wanted this for my nearly 2 year old son, who insists on trying to open anything with a mechanical latch. I saw something similar at preschool that was in the shape of a box that I liked better, because it seemed more interesting to the kids to get inside a box (rather than this flat puzzle). However, unable to find that toy online, I bought this puzzle instead. My almost 2 year old son really enjoys the challenge of this puzzle and is entertained by the cute animals behind the doors. I was surprised to find that my 4 year old son also enjoys spending time unlocking the doors as well. I would highly recommend it.

Review of Latches Board

Rating: 5

My 14 month old granddaughter started manipulating the latches the minute she saw them, even though she is quite a bit younger than the recommended age of 3+. The board is so colorful, attractive, and well designed that was hard to resist. She keeps going back to it often repeating all the necessary steps. And her playmates gravitate to it too. The only negative I can think of is that some of the latches get in the way of closing other doors next to the latch. This could be avoided with a larger board, but that in itself has some problems - extra weight, space needed to set board on etc. Overall, a very successful toy.

Melissa & Doug Latches Board

Rating: 5

I got this for my 1 1/2 year old son, knowing it might be a little advanced for him. It turns out my 3 year old daughter loves it, too. My son can't quite manipulate the latches yet. But he likes just opening and closing all the doors and looking at the pictures of the animals inside done in different colors. He has also started to figure out some of the easier latches, so I think with not too much practice, he will have it mastered. My daughter, meanwhile, can do all the latches, and likes opening the doors to count all the animals. That's part of what's great about this - there are a bunch of different skills that are addressed. The pictures of the animals are different colors and there are different numbers of animals, so kids can practice colors and counting. So, for example, it says "one purple pony". This is well made and I think it will hold up to years of use.

Product seems very Sturdy. The only concern may be the longevity of the pictures as I can see them wearing off overtime. The latches are all of the highest quality. My three year spent a good deal of time with it. It is not a toy that will consume hours but, the next day he worked at it again. It is one that I will put up and bring out after a few days! My five year old also took an interest in it and our 18 month old also enjoyed opening the doors once the latches were opened, so I am very happy with the purchase!

Our son received this for his first birthday and plays with it occasionally. I anticipate he will play with it more in a couple months. Currently he just likes opening the doors after we have already helped unlock them. The colors and animals are great for learning as well. We count the animals and say the animal sounds and it holds his interest. It helps promote curiosity and problem solving skills. It is a unique puzzle that has many great features. I'm positive this will be a favorite when he is better able to do it on his own.

Was keen to have this. My kid is fascinated with latches, locks, knobs, etc. Great variation on latches, but a couple are hard to open...the kind you rip a fingernail on and once unlatched there's not easy way to open some of the doors. At 18 mo, my kid can't utilize it fully. Had the same trouble with a D&M puzzle. The cut of the wood made it difficult to put the shapes in if not in one particular way. A square should go in any way you hold it. There should not be one right side up.
The upside is you're right. Right side up, fully utilized, and in great shape is how we prefer things too. We contacted our customer to assist, and this feedback was provided to Melissa & Doug. Visit our Returns & Exchanges Center for prompt care.

I purchased this product for my grandsons. We have 3 two year olds (give or take a few months). The product says it is for age 3 and up. They are probably not ready for this yet but still spend time with it. They like opening the doors & seeing the animals behind the door. They can manage most of the locks except for one, lock #2. It is even hard for me. However, it seems that it may be loosening up with each opening. We also have a six year old grandson and he likes doing all the locks, etc. once in a while. I think it is made well and as they get older they will work with it more.

I felt that I needed to sand all the corners and edges of the doors so that they weren't so sharp or splintery for little fingers. I got this for my son who is younger than the age recommended and he loves it.

My one year old is obsessed with opening doors, so we got this for him to hopefully keep him away from the ones that can pinch his fingers. It doesn't accomplish that completely, but he does love to play with it, and it keeps him occupied for a good amount of time! It's also helped with fine motor skills.

Offers a variety of dexterity exercises. It also provides a multitude of skills learned of concentration, open-close, lock, counting and colors. Great toy! Only complaint, the design some locks overlap with some doors and for a child it can become frustrating not understanding the "layers" concept to close this first and open that or move this.

Bought this for my one-year-old granddaughter but when it came, I thought the 3-year-old would like it too. He was immediately an expert at opening all the locks and was happy to show off his skills. She likes to open and close the doors so we keep the locks open for her. Better to give it earlier than later. The quality is excellent. It is sturdy, well-designed, has vibrant colors and the pieces stay in one place. ;-)

This toy is recommended for 3 years and up. We got it for our 11 month old. He can unlatch almost all of the latches and can open the doors but can't latch them all back up yet. He does love to play with the real metal devices though. I think he will enjoy it even more as he matures a bit.

Christmas present for 3 year old grandson. I thought it was a puzzle but it has doors that latch. Good thing is that pieces will not get lost. Opened all the doors once before moving onto the next present. He was willing to show me how what was hiding behind each door and how all the doors unlatched and opened when asked.

Wonderful for problem solving and fine motor skills

As a mother, I love the fact that she focuses and works on it on her own diligently while talking to me. However, she was "spoiled" with the board that has magnets behind the doors, so she expected to take something out of each door. That's my only complaint. Otherwise, I think this is a very good example of REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE PRACTICE. Pretending is wonderful, but this gives her real life problem solving experience.

This toy is great for practicing fine motor skills in a fun way. The kids seem to enjoy the challenge. They are delighted by the animals they find in each house. The motivation level is higher than I expected. The only drawback is one of the doors doesn't close completely now that it has been played with A LOT. (It is about 1/8 inch off.)

Each door is also a different lock, so it requires different thinking. My child plays with this toy daily and for long periods of time. It is also great because it is made of wood, so no toxic chemicals, as well as it does NOT make noise! It is a lovely quiet educational yet fun toy.

I was so pleased to randomly come across this gift when looking for gift ideas for my son. We ended up getting so many gifts for Christmas that I plan to hold onto this for his birthday this Sping. However, I'm sure he'll love it. I was impressed with the quality of the board. I was worried that the latches would be easy to tear off the board with a son that is very strong for his age. But upon looking at it, I was pleased with how sturdy they are attached to the board. I love the idea of giving him a toy to assist his eye/hand coordination as well as problem solving! Also, it's a great toy that I foresee tossing into the car for him to play with on longer trips or to tote along with him to grandparent's homes.

A very durable product as the doors are pure wood, and the locks are very solid!!!

I like the different latches. Latch 2 seems to be a little hard for my 2 1/2 year old, but we work on it. Latches and hindges are not sharp and don't catch on other items that come in contact with the board. Colors are bright. Animals look like what they are supposed to look like. Board is not too heavy and the corners are rounded. Best used on a table. A little worried about splinters.
