Kmart Has it Wrong - You Want Your Child to Play with the Cardboard Box
TOPICS | Parenting Posted Wednesday, November 6, 2013 (1,116 views)

Last night I saw this adorable holiday commercial for Kmart's toy department. It had a very rambunctious young boy telling parents everywhere to buy toys that your kids will actually play with. I love the concept, evergreen toys that do not go out of style with the latest movie or t.v. show. Try buying your child the newest technology toy and get on the revolving door when it will be out of date by Easter. Where the boy really gets me in his infinate 6 six year old wisdom, is when he rips on playing with the cardboard box. One the the greatest open-ended play toys of all time the cardboard box has engaged more kids the any toy on any "Holiday Hot List". As a parent of two children around this boy's age I can tell you from experience, he could get more learning and true play value from that box than he will from any toy listed. I am not advocating for giving your children cardboard for this year's holiday gifts, but I would suggest looking at the play traits of the box. Look for toys that engage, create open-ended play, and require your child to think. Sorry Kmart - I will take the box! If you agree, check out Fat Brain Toy's Waymorethanabox.com for amazing play projects involving the cardboard box.
