A Papillion-La Vista second-grader didn't catch any fish on an outing to Mahoney State Park with his dad, but their time together made an impression.

The trip inspired 8-year-old James Burke Brickner to draw Nebraska's winning entry in the Doodle 4 Google competition.

The theme of this year's contest was "My Best Day Ever."

The company spells out G-o-o-g-l-e on its home page in clever and whimsical ways.

Each year, Google invites school kids to submit their own artistic version of the company logo. The top entry is featured one day on the home page.

Brickner, who goes by his middle name, Burke, drew a picture of dad and him in a boat, with worms forming the letters "G" and "e." He titled it "Fish Tales with my Dad."

Burke and his dad, Jim Brickner, took the trip last June while Jim was home on leave in the middle of the 14-month deployment to South Korea. Jim Brickner is a major in the Air Force and stationed at Offutt Air Force Base.

Jim Brickner said he was moved that his son picked their outing as his best day ever.

"I'm speechless. It pulled at the heartstrings," he said.

Burke attends Patriot Elementary School. He said he worked about 10 hours on the drawing. That's a lot of time for a second-grader, his mom, Donna Brickner, said.

He found out he was Nebraska's winner this morning in a ceremony at his school, prompting a hug and a high-five from mom.

Entries were judged on artistic merit, creativity and originality, and how well they communicated the theme.

As one of 50 state winners, Burke is assured of a trip to New York City and a prize of a digital design tablet computer.

The national winner will bring home a host of prizes, including a $30,000 scholarship and a $50,000 grant for a computer lab at his school.

The Google 4 Doodle contest drew 130,000 entries from across the country.
