The handle is a little too long for small hands. The slide mechanism requires more coordination than some toddlers are capable of. Probably better for older children.

We bought this with house centipedes in mind, and it's succeeded brilliantly. (House centipedes are usually a couple of inches long and very fast. Ours are, anyway.) The Bugview is big enough to drop over one during a still moment, and secure enough to shut it in without even costing it a leg half the time--although they're quite energetic about looking for a way out, and not shy about losing legs.
It's a huge step up from trapping them under a glass and then sliding a calendar underneath. The wife now prowls around every evening, looking for house centipedes to relocate.

My son is 20 months and may be a little too young for it but I can see the value in having a toy that is something that encourages him to investigate.
