Kind of tough to get levelled and used to starting. But after that its a great centerpiece. Do not place anywhere near monitors or computer equipment/media as this is a large magnet. A coworker that I let "borrow" this to take to their office set it next to his laptop and it messed it up bad.

Levitron

Rating:

This anti-gravity top is pretty amazing. If you think you are going to spin the top without any troubles - think again. I would highly recommend the auto spinner. I did not purchase it as I thought - who can't spin a top? Boy was I wrong. It probably took me several day of spinning and cursing before i got the hang of it. I must admit when I finally got it to work it is pretty cool. Balancing the top in the magnetic field is also tricky. I purchased the cherry wood levitron, as I thought it looked nice. After days of practicing the spin the top really dinged up the finish. If I had to purchase again I would buy one with a plastic ring.

Fun with Magnets
Posted 1/14/2008 by Russell James

Rating:

Fun, but difficult magnetic top/puzzle that can keep you entertained for quite a lengthy period of time. It could also test your patience. The challenge with the levitron is getting the base properly leveled and loading the right amount of weight onto the top.

Challenging But FUN!

We puchased this for my 8 year old son. It takes some time to figure out the correct weight and the base needs to be level. I wish we had ordered the spinner for it as it is very hard to get it to spin fast enough with your fingers. My 8 year old was able to get to get it going around the 3rd day. He got very frusterated but was wide-eyed once he was able to get it to float. It was very entertaining for my engineer husband and curious 8 year old son and it was something that interested them both and held their attention. It was a great time to teach our son some physics.

Space Age Fun

I purchased this as a gift for my spouse who enjoys puzzles and tech toys. We had a prior one that was not nearly as eye pleasing. I do recommend the starter and the perpetuator for full enjoyment. We have all enjoyed it. It is one of those fascinating toys that grab attention and interest from other people.

Great Product!

Works well and does what it should. Patience is needed however. The only drawback is how soft the cherry is. It becomes dented relatively quickly. The item will look well used within the week. However, this doesn't bother me; the design is unique in that it has a hole in the center, offering more "in depth" levitation than other products offer.

Wood finish on top of product was poor at best. Very bad instructions as well. Like the object as art, but that is all about it is good for. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: We appreciate the Levitron as art as well. It is also fun to play with. We contacted the customer and offered manufacturer's information for guidance in using the Levitron, and the option of a replacement or refund.)

I've tried and tried again but I can't get the top to levitate for more than 3 or 4 seconds! I read many reviews before buying so I knew it was a challenge. Listened to many reviewers and purchased the auto spinner all to no avail. I have had my 14 & 16 yr old boys adjusting the weights, spinning freehand, adj the legs again with no success. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: Fun is on the rise. We spoke to Phil and credited his account. We also provided manufacturer's information for assistance in operating the Levitron.)

Levitron Is Pretty Darn Amazing!
Posted 4/12/2007 by David Taylor

Rating:

This toy had my high school Physics class oohing and ahhing. It definitely took some practice however. Its requirement to be perfectly level does not make it conducive to setting up at more than one location without additional tweaking to make it level again. It is extra cool to pass large objects such as a piece of cardboard, your hand, or even a tuning fork between the top and the wood ring. A silver dollar-sized hole in the cardboard allows the top to pass right through it. The difficulty in setting the toy up at different locations (e.g. on another table) is the reason for a less than perfect score. I also purchased the spinning tool. Without that, it would be even more difficult to get started.

Rating:

A beautiful piece of work - I love it. However I was spoiled with original "Black Box" Levitron, the box was easier to level out the cherry wood isn't as easy. The cherry wood also seams to a powerful base magnet, it flings the top a very good distance. That being said, I do enjoy it and I'm glad I have it again.

Lots of fun, once you get the balance and weight right and master the art of spinning the top. (There is a separate powered spinner available at extra cost). A cool office toy and very nice design. It even works with the Levitron Perpetuator.

Very Challenging; Children Are Fascinated
Posted 8/15/2006 by Mike Farmer

Rating:

I was able to get the top to levitate after two evenings of effort. The one-page instructions found on the Levitron website were very helpful. There are three "tricks" to successful levitation. 1: The top must be spun at the right speed (it becomes unstable below 18 revolutions per second) and the spin must be stable (no wobble or lateral jitter). 2: The top must be weighted to within 0.1 grams of correct weight so that when it is raised to the right height, it lifts off the lifter plate, but doesn't jump off (which introduces instability). 3: The base must be leveled very precisely so that the top is centered in the magnetic field. The top is very sensitive to any instability--one of my children leaning on the kitchen table with their hand caused the top to veer out of the magnetic field. It requires many, many trials to master these three tricks, so I abandoned using the optional starter that I purchased with the Leviton, because it adds at least 5 seconds to each trial. All of my children, ages 6, 8, 11, 14, and 17 were fascinated by the Levitron and wanted to try it. My older children were able to master the skills to successful levitation, but required tutoring by an adult. My younger children may be unable to muster the delicate coordination and patience required to successfully levitate. I would not recommend this toy for children under 12 unless they have access to an adult mentor and are willing to devote hours to the endeavor. I rated this product 4 stars because there were not adequate instructions included in the box. Also, the lifter has a convex (domed) surface which encourages the top to wander around as it spins. If the surface of the lifter were concave, I believe the spinning top would more easily settle into a centered, stable position.

Good educational toy.
Posted 2/10/2006 by Chris Shaffer

Rating:

I found the Levitron amusing. The instructions leave a little to be desired as far as they never clearly state that you need to find the heaviest possible weight that won't fall down for the top. Took about 30 mins to figure it out exactly. It is fun, entertaining, does what it claims to do, and for my purpose is an excellent educational toy for children learning about magnetism. It really opened my 6 year olds mind to what could be done with magnets and how megatism travels through objects (hands, drinking glasses, etc). One more criticism is that the top falling puts a lot of little dings in the cherry wood, there may be a better material to use other than cherry wood.

I love the idea of this top. I think it looks great, too. We have tried it (many different combinations of weights, tinkering with the feet, and even purchased a spinner to get it started) for hours now and still haven't had total success with it. While we do get it to levitate momentarily, it immediately jumps to one side or another. Still planning on going online for further tips.

This is an excellent executive desk toy! It does take much patience to get the weight balance set up (at least 50 tries..) but it is worth it. I also purchased the top starter and it really should be required. It is very difficult to manually spin the top correctly..

Cool Cubicle Toy

Once you get it to work it really is pretty cool. The only thing is I would recommend putting a couple of coats of polyurithane on it as the wood dents very easily. Also pay close attention to the weight even adding the second rubber grommet can make a difference.

A hit.... Toy Stores should have this on display
Posted 12/8/2005 by Paul Woll

A hit.... Toy Stores should have this on display. I bought one and had 4 other guys from work ask me to order one for them. Takes a little practice. First get the weights just right to the point that the top lifts off the wood by itself but not too high about a centimeter or less. (Don't push the top up after it has lifted. Just allow the top to bounce off wood and lift the wood up til it is steady.) Then figure out which way the top goes and balance the legs until the thing is level. Have fun. I wish the wood had a better harder coating on it to prevent dings and scratches. I recommend putting an additional coat of some harder polyeurathane or something.

My 8th grade nephew tried for several hours to make it work without success. He focused on making the base level rather than getting the top's weight right. Getting the weight right is critical. The cherry wood base is soft wood so it will ding and scratch easily.

It's hard to get good at! Some people have complained about how banged up it gets, especially at the beginning while learning how to do it. To avoid ruining the beautiful finish, we got some of that thin foam packing sheeting that sometimes surrounds small appliances when you first unpack them. We taped it on and around it, with a hole cut in the middle for the lifter. Once we finally get good at it we'll take the protective stuff off and enjoy how good it looks!

interesting but difficult

Rating:

This toy is very cool but difficult to master. It is not suitable for kids or people with little patience. I was not able to make it work right after setting it up. In attempting to make the toy work, I damaged the surface of the wood. The top, when it becomes unstable, drops onto the wood surface and makes a dent. I think over time the surface of the toy would be very "used" looking. I think next time I will buy the plastic version. It is still a very cool concept and fun to try--but frustrating like a rubik's cube!

This is a really great product. I bought it for my boyfriend for his birthday and he loved it. We played with it for a very long time. The only slight issue that I had is that since the magnet it so strong, when the top is not weighted perfectly and it falls sideways, it dents the wood sometimes. It's really great though, this will be a present for more people than just my boyfriend in the future...thanks.

Product review of Levitron Cherry Wood
Posted 3/29/2005 by Steve

Rating:

I previously had the old model of levitron, which had a much smaller square base and a far lower quality top. It was very cool, but had seen a lot of abuse; the top was chipped and didn't spin straight anymore, many of the weights were lost - and when I finally lost the last ring for holding on the weights, I broke down and decided to buy the new one. This one is definitely much higher quality. It levitates at about twice the height of the old one, and seems to go for longer. The magnet on the top is made out of high-quality steel, instead of the old ferrite one, and looks like it should be impervious to chips and dings - so theoretically should last forever. This one is a bit harder to get spinning than the old one was - you have a smaller platform to work on, and it's further from the magnet - but once you get the hang of it, it comes naturally. The only other real downside of the cherry one is that the wood is susceptible to dings - for each of the many times you fail, there will be a small divot in the wood - It doesn't really bother me, it's a toy, so it's going to see some wear and tear - and it doesn't detract from the coolness of it. If this does worry you though, pick up the standard plastic version instead.

Levitron Product Review
Posted 3/11/2005 by Mark Bagatsing

Rating:

Have a couple of comments: 1. Your pictures and product description are somewhat deceiving. Leading me to think that the image can be accomplished with relative ease, without any warning that it takes time and practice. I would have appreciated a warning that would have told me that it takes skill and practice to accomplish the desired result. 2. In the process of trying, the surface has already been dented in a couple of places and I expect more dents with eventual practice. Its almost unavoidable, the top just spins off in any direction. Problem is, possibly by the time I get this right, the wood could already be dented in so many places to the point that it is no longer elegant to display. 3. I'm going to double check the box but I dont think that I got a CD-ROM with the cherry-wood. I know that it was only stated for the Omega Platinum but I kinda thought both were the same product, just different look and therefore would also come with the CD-ROM. 4. I have been practicing for about an hour a day and still cant get it right. Again, had I known it was going to be this difficult - maybe I would not have made the purchase but my main point is that - It would have been nice to be made aware that the description and the picture can be deceiving and results take time and practice. And maybe for some, can never be achieved at all. 5. I will keep it, its been bought and paid for. Hopefully someday I will enjoy it, just as much as I thought I would when I saw the picture and read the product description. On the positive side, I enjoy your web-site and have no complaints on all the other products that I have purchased. Definitely, I'll be back for more.

Great Toy for grown-ups!
Posted 3/11/2005 by Neil Bacon

Rating:

This is a gizmo that will amaze and puzzle you. The levitating top had PhD physicists at work arguing about how it works, a subtle effect that depends crucially on the precession brought about by rotation and slight misalignment. It looks beautiful with the cherry wood finish, and it is fun to experiment with the weights provided and with one's spinning technique. Warning: to spin the top successfully requires some fine motor skills as well as patience, and this is not a toy for a child. An average adult should get it going within an hour or so. In our first day of trying, my dad and I managed a record levitation time of over 2 minutes. Unfortunately the wood finish suffers a bit from the inevitable dings, but that seems unavoidable.

A kid again.

Rating:

My Levitron came on the very day that it was predicted when I ordered it. I met the UPS truck at the end of my driveway. I immediately opened the box and assembled the Levitron. After a quick review of the printed material, I was up and running. The directions gave a very accurate description of the problems involved in fine tuning the Levitron. After some adjustments I was successful in getting in some good spins. Although my older fingers had a harder time getting the correct spin all of the time, my sons were able to be more consistent. I ended up taking it out to work and it has created a lot of fun in the office. (In our spare time of course.) My coworker took it home over the weekend and had such a fun time with his kids that he is getting one for his family. I could not be more pleased. I thought that I had become too old to play with toys but the Levitron brought out the kid in me again. Your product catalog has created a little bit of a problem in our house. We are having a hard time sharing it and then there is the problem of justifying post-Christmas toy purchases. I will have to think of something. (Ground hogs Day? Valentines? Preisdents Day?) Lives up to the hype and then some
Posted 10/25/2004 by Wasif Khan

Rating:

This is simply the best new toy I have played with in probably the last 5 years. I was someone who was just browsing the internet looking for a neat or unique toy of sorts that I could give as a gift. Stumbled across the levitron and chose to purchase it after reading several reviews. Needless to say I gave it as a gift alright, too myself :) I was not disappointed. It is always a wonderful surprise when your purchase actually surpasses your expectations. It is a great conversation piece with both young and old. The cherry wood looks beautiful and fits in with any environment. Also this model has a hole in the center which makes it even more astonishing to see the top spinning over nothing but air. And its strange but even after weeks of having it I still automatically glance at it everytime I enter the living room where it is in constant operation. It took me about 4 hours of fiddling around to get the top stabilized and afterwards you feel a sense of accomplishment. Finally there is something inherent in human beings and their fascination with things like levitation and objects that seem to defy gravity. Perhaps this is what makes this "toy" so attractive to old and young alike. I am seriously thinking of buying another one to send to my younger brother.
