Works really well - I was surprised
Posted 6/12/2008 by Alex

It's great. It took a couple of practice runs for me to get it to levitate and rotate just the way I wanted, but then it was fine. I'd heard that some of these kinds of globes were very difficult to get to work right, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well this one did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Great Service And Product
Posted 1/23/2008 by Michael Thompson

Rating:

This is a stunning addition to my office and captures the attention of almost everyone who walks in. The globe is beautiful, and it is nearly half the price of a similar product I was tempted to buy locally. The globe is at its best when it is gently spinning. My only suggestion for improvement is that it be a little less sensitive to attempts to spin it. Half of the people who admire the globe feel compelled to reach out and touch it to give it a spin, and unless you do it just right, the balance is thrown off. It takes a practiced, steady hand to set the globe back in the center of the magnetic field, something I invariably end up doing myself.

Amazing Levitating Globe

I looked at many levitating globes before buying this one. I think the blue and silver combination is a great sleek look. The person who received this gift loved everything about it. Great Buy!

Great Globe

I bought this as a gift for a friend not knowing whether she would like it or not, turns out she does. I tried it out before I gave it to her (just to make sure it worked fine). It did and it’s a quite impressive toy (or magnetically levitating spherical geographical chart). In any case I didn't give it 5 stars 1) Haven't seen it in action long enough to know whether it will last for a long time but in its defense, the construction seems pretty sturdy. 2) Its hard to get the globe into anything but a gentle spin without disrupting balance (it sticks to the ceiling or floor of the stand when disturbed) That said, it’s a pretty nice globe (the lack of lat lon lines give it a clean feel though they may be missed by purists). I would definitely recommend it for folks who like geography, astronomy, science, gadgets and that sort of thing.

Levitating Globe

We bought this for our boss to set on his desk at work. He has only had it for a couple days, but thought it was a great gift. The wording is easy to read. Everything really stands out on the globe.

Interesting But Pricey!
Posted 12/3/2007 by BONNIE DANDREA

Rating:

The levitating globe is neat, but I'm not so sure it's worth the price. If you have the money to spend then yeah sure buy it. It does make a constant humming noise when it is levitating, but at least that's how I know when to let go so it levitates instead of being forced up to the top.

Cool Metallic Blue
Posted 8/22/2007

Rating:

Cool product that looks great on home/office desk. The map is well marked and legible. The globe itself is fairly light, lighter than one would expect. Making the globe levitate is tricky at first, but after a few attempts you learn the trick. A great product for all ages. Overall, a simple and smart product.

I've Got The World At My Fingertips

I was a Guest attendee at the Toy Fair 2007, and I saw the Levitating Globes there. I was very impressed with their overall appearance and decided to treat myself and bought one from the Fat Brain Toys website. I now have it prominently displayed on my desk. It makes a beautiful accessory for my desk. Each day when I see it still in the levitating state it renews my appreciation for the wonderful design of it. It makes a great conversation piece and most folks who see it are very complimentary of it. It takes a wee bit of time to find that "sweet spot" to reset it in its levitating position, but as time has progressed I've become much better at it and can now do it within one or two tries.

Nice Product

I bought the globe as a gift for my husband. It actually looked nicer than I had anticipated. My only disappointment is that the globe does not spin. I was hoping it would spin continuously like another product I had seen. Overall, my husband did enjoy it.

Cool with Reservations
Posted 1/16/2007 by Dennis G. Ryan

Rating:

The Titan 8" Levitating Globe is fun and very cool but it only levitates for about 2 to 3 minutes then it begins oscillating and then snaps up tight to the top. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: Mr. Ryan will be receiving a new globe from the manufacturer, Fascinations, per our request on his behalf. When the Titan levitates it is quite impressive.)

Review of Titan 8 inch Levitating Globe - Metalic Blue
Posted 1/10/2007

Rating:

This a wonderful gift for people of all ages. My 11 year old son, who has a strong science interest, totally loves it. In addition, it looks terrific, so it can be displayed almost anywhere. My son and I each had no difficulty at all getting the globe to "levitate." It took just a minute or two to find the sweet spot - the trick is to be gentle in your movements. One suggestion for the future: include a more detailed explanation of the science of how this works to maximize the educational potential.

Cool globe. The Perfect size - it would be hard to view the countries and names if any smaller. Too bad that it doesn't have a built in light.

Steady, Steady, Oh...!

A steadier hand would've helped in setting this thing up. Way cool product. So simple an 8 year old could set it up. My advice... find an 8 year old to set it up for you.

Floating Wonder...
Posted 11/3/2006 by Andrew Thacker

Rating:

This globe is awesome! It has an accurate geographical representation of all countries and clearly labeled capitals and major cities. Plus its intriguing ability to levitate pulls one toward it and inspires closer scrutiny. This works great with kids and adults and seems to be a great way to get kids to look at the larger world around them and develop a broader understanding of where places are located!

Levitating Globe
Posted 2/21/2006 by Juana Larralde

Rating:

Titan 8 Levitating Globe did wonders in my class. Used for demonstrating magnetic field it is excellent. The next step is to produce one with the 23.5 degrees axis tilt, and that could be used to extend teaching to seasons. To top it, light up (from the inside) the tropical area, and I am sure will be a great addition to any classroom.

My rating of Titan 8 inch Levitating Globe - Metalic Blue
Posted 2/8/2006 by Paul Blackton

Rating:

It is OK. I think the effect would be greater if the distances between poles was uniform. Top pole to globe is only about 1.5" while the bottom is 2.5". The globe it self is very pleasing to the eye and the stand is not too intrusive.

Floating
Posted 2/7/2006 by Gary Hodges

Rating:

I set it up, plugged it in, and tried to get it to "float" between the magnets. I read the instructions. I tried it from the top, the bottom, and every other way I could think of in order to position it correctly so that it would float. It wouldn't. Now it sits in the closet collecting dust until I accept the fact that I wasted $80 and just throw it away.
(Note from Fat Brain Toys: A guy who can persevere like that has earned our respect. We contacted Mr. Hodges to tell him so - and he is being sent a replacement globe immediately.)

floating globe
Posted 7/15/2005 by james keachie

Rating:

The best thing I can say about the levitating globe is that it is attractive. It is a hassle to get it to work properly (the globe can be floating in a perfectly still position, then, a minute later, it begins to slightly wobble, then wobble more until, whack, the globe smacks against the upper magnet). What apparently happened is that the base was not sitting on a perfectly flat and smooth surface. By moving the unit to where the support arms are braced against a wall solved the problem. No matter how hard I try, I still have been unable to make the globe slowly rotate without the globe eventually zooming up to the upper magnet.

It was exactly what I expected, but I would like to see a broader range of magnetic levitation products, such as aircraft, that use the same base.

Fun Floating Toy
Posted 3/11/2005 by Benjamin Kleber

Rating:

I absolutely love this globe! Though it is bare of latitude and longitude markings, it has an impressive amount of detail. With a minute or so of practice it is easy to place the globe in its levitating position, and once set spinning it will go for several minutes before coming to a halt. (Hint: for easy spinning, blow obliquely on the globe through a straw or coffee stirrer.) Possibly the most fun thing about this toy is the confused double-takes people make when they see it hovering in place, and then their shock when I grab it out of mid-air for them to look at. Definitely a high-rate toy, both from the fun-to-use perspective as well as the slick-engineering end.

Not what I had expected.
Posted 3/11/2005 by Heman

ok, first the arrival. It was quite fast. Within 3 days delivered at my door after purchase. That's a good part; but now the less good part: After opening the package, I noticed the globe was made out of plastic. The website didn't tell me it was made out of plastic, but instead gave the customer the idea, it was made out of a sort of metal, or high quality material (looking at the name 'Titan', and the reflection and the metal color of the globe on the photo gave another impression). Next 'surprise': The globe needed an adaptor. That was unexpected, since the website gives the customer the idea, that the globe is floating in the air by only magnetic waves. It nowhere mentions an adaptor, which could be a pain, if I wanted to put the globe on a piece of furniture where no powerplug is near. Third: The Adaptor was not universal (120/230V) compatible, but only supported the american standard. Even worse, the globe utilises 18VDC. An adaptor with this output is pretty difficult to find, since most house equipement uses maximumly 12VDC. In other words, I had my globe within 3 days, but it'll cost me weeks to make it work properly. But if it works, it seems quite a fun toy. Another disadvantage would be, that there's no power button on the equipement. If you place the globe on a closet, or table, where the powerplug is low to the ground, or difficult to reach, you always need to reach down to unplug it, in order to make it stop consuming energy. Potential future developments: --------------------------------------- Maybe it would've been cool, since the globe uses a powerplug anyways, to have had 2 lights, one somewhere near the upper magnet, the other near the Southpole (or the lower magnet), shining on the globe to accentuate it. Not specifically these Disco-colorleds, but stylefull low consuming halogen lamps (like 2 to 5 watts lamps). This way it could also serve as a night light too. It would be cool to have a small transformator built in the stand, in stead of having an external one on the cable. (It's even theoretically possible to buid a light inside of the globe, that gets lightened up, by the changing magnetic fields produced by the micro processor.) Another idea would be to have a powerbutton (On/Off) for the magnetic globe, in order to consume less energy. That when the powerbutton is being switched off, the globe will rise, and attach itself to the top-magnet (so it won't fall down and cause damage). It would also be cool to have a dimmer for both the lights, in order to adjust the light shining on the globe.
