Information about Brain Food
Posted 7/20/2009 by Pam Murphy

Rating:

i would agree with one reviewer who said that this appears to be "glorified silly putty", HOWEVER, my 8 year old and 4 year old boys have gotten this toy out EVERYDAY since they got it about 10 days ago! We got this for my four year old for his birthday, and they are currently playing with the Lapis and Scarab colors. I am going to give my 8 year old the amber (glow in the dark) color for his birthday (which i suspect may be even more popular than the other two). and i may even consider buying more. I would not recommend this toy for anyone younger than 4, because if they press it into their clothes, it may be a "sticky" situation. the only reason that i gave it 4 stars out of five is that it is a bit pricey for such a small package (it looks like it would cost much less). But this is a great toy that my kids are really enjoying (especially like to play with it on cookie sheets for some reason), and best of all, it does not require batteries!

Brain Food

Rating:

I bought the Brain Food - Sunburst for my son, but we all play with it. It is a great sensory toy and provides my son with something to do in the car or anywhere he needs to be sit still. It is easily changed from one shape to the next and the fact that it changes colors is just an added bonus.

Brain Food - Somewhat disappointed
Posted 11/18/2008 by Terry Gonzalez

Rating:

The children I work with love Brain Food. We were somewhat disappointed with the Twilight color because on the website it looked sparkly and more purple. It is neither sparkly or purple, but very much plain blue, similar to Lapis which we purchased a while back.
Thank you for the opportunity to give feedback.

Product review of Brain Food

The product itself is really cool. It is a very durable putty with great color. I would want more directions included on what NOT to do with it - since it got stuck to fabric and I do not know how to remove it.

My kids like this putty and enjoy playing with it. It's very beautiful in color and there is quite a bit there to play with. It very similar to other putty on the market. I think the price is a tad high for the product, but we are satisfied with our purchase.

I had no idea how popular this would be with our 3 and 5 year olds. They split up the can and play and play with it. It has gotten on their clothes, the couch, changing table, etc. But has come out fairly easily. It has provided a lot of creative and hands-on opportunities for them.

Black Magnetic Version Hard to Mold
Posted 4/2/2009 by Linda Lankowski
- CO-WORKER

Rating:

Setting: Office

The putties (I bought at least one of each) were fought over, and we're having fun with this stress reliever. The black Super Magnetic putty is pretty hard to mold, squeeze, shape, etc. (Maybe because of whatever makes it magnetic?) The only person in the office who liked this one is a 23 year old man. The women didn't have a strong enough grip. The magnetic putty is not excessively magnetic. We spent quite some time trying to make it stick to our desks. You have to have just the right amount of putty to make it work. Too little and there's not enough adhesion, too much putty and it's not strong enough to hold its own weight.

I bought the Super Magnetic Brain Food as a gift for my ten year old grandson. He could not keep his hands off of it. Everyone that saw it wanted to play with it. We were all a little disappointed that it was not truly magnetic as the name would have you believe, however it will stick to the front of a file cabinet or the fridge with a little applied pressure. Over all I still give it four stars.

Brain Food
Posted 5/11/2009

Rating:

Bought this as a gift for my 7 year old grandson's birthday. I opened it as soon as the box from Fat Brain Toys arrived so that I could check it out. I was a little disappointed at first by the amount of putty in the tin, but as I began to squish it around, I found it to be just the right size. It doesn't glow in the dark right away, but must be exposed to light first. It was the most popular toy at the party! The kid's wouldn't put it down, and if one did, the next kid picked it up right away. Love the storage tin.

Maybe Sort Of Magnetic
Posted 7/7/2009
- EDUCATOR

Rating:

Setting: School

I've purchased Brain Food before. The kids I work with (who range in age from 6-22) love it! The Super Magnetic version has the same cool texture and consistency, but when we tried it up against a number of things it should attract, it only attracted some of them. It worked the best when stretched to a very thin strand--then it seemed to attract paper clips best. Still great fun to play with, but not super-magnetic.

I bought this toy for my two sons who both have sensory integration issues. Thought neither of them like "slimy" textures, they both loved the putty texture. They didn't mention much about sparkles or color changes, but really liked to "make strings" and swirl the strings on the table.
I'm very satisfied with this product.

Review of Brain Food
Posted 6/7/2011 by Jackie Bache

Rating:

The children loved it. I absolutely hated it. It made a horrible mess, and I am not really very fussy about such things. It is hard to remove from some surfaces (like rugs), as you might expect, but also hard to remove from surfaces you might NOT expect. One of the girls was holding it in her hand and it melted into her hand. It was unbelievably difficult to remove it. This stuff is basically a stickier, prettier version of Silly Putty. Not even close to being worth the money, IMO, and I have begun throwing it away as I find it around the house. I would never buy this stuff again!
 |
 |
At extreme temperatures, Brain Food behaves predictably. At frigid temperatures, Brain Food settles down and doesn't move much. Exceptionally warm temperatures make Brain Food quite affectionate; so it may cling to things. We've never known it to stick to hands - though a millisecond beside an open refrigerator would cool it right down for simple removal. We provided our customer a gift certificate. If any product surprises you with questionable behavior, please let us know! Visit the Returns & Exchanges center for details.

I bought this for my Autistic/ADHD kids (8 & 9yrs). They love it! It acts like a solid, but will "drip" over edges if given a chance. It keeps their hands busy when they are waiting. We are all enjoying this. So far it has NOT stuck to the dog hair, couch, or floor. Worth the money.

We gave this as a gift to our 5-year-old nephew who has a great natural curiosity. Our nephew has had a lot of fun playing with the putty in general, but especially likes seeing it glow in the dark. We gave him both the glow in the dark and magnetic putty and while he does like the magnetic putty, he prefers the glow in the dark putty. I would definitely buy the glow in the dark putty again.

Great Toy!

My five year old son loves his brain food! So cool how it very slowly flattens out on its own when placed in a ball shape. My son fidgets with his hands alot so this has been great at keeping him busy with something constructive!
Be careful with some fabrics as it may leave a slight stain.

Brain Food is good stuff . My 4 year old daughter with SPD NEEDS to squish and play with things in her hands or she gets real antsy and out of control. Brain Food Is A Fun Time-Waster
Posted 6/18/2008 by Sharon Chandler

Rating:

Setting: Home

The Brain Food has been fun when there are a few minutes to kill. It is especially handy when waiting for other people. I keep mine on the dining room table. I play with it when I am waiting for things. The kids play with it while waiting for dinner. It doesn't hold it's shape very long. Our creations constantly melt back into a glob. However, this may be due to the heat. I think it is cool that it doesn't stay, it keeps you making new things rather than just looking at something you already made. Kind of smells funny, but most putty products do. I have already bought some as a gift for someone else, and I would probably do so again. The Electric Blue - Lapis isn't as sparkly as the color description says, but it is pretty and fun to play with. I think the Hypercolor ones would be even more fun.

The Brain Food 'clay' seems to be the consistency of that which is used is PT with people who have motor or sensory needs. It seems to be superior at this point to any I've been able to purchase. The texture and feel is pleasing to someone who has tactile sensory challenges and when it is used for a continued period the clay becomes easier for them to manipulate.

This is a very cool product! Our son had been playing with Silly Putty everyday for awhile, but when we saw this, we knew it was a great gift for him because it is a much bigger amount and his favorite color. Once it was out of the can, the whole family wanted to play with it! Love that it has no noticeable odor and doesn't leave a residue on anything (that we've tried yet). We have ordered 3 more cans for our niece and nephews and know they'll love it, too.

Excellent Brain Food in Parietal Lobe Pearl
Posted 5/23/2011 by Paprika Clark

Rating:

Setting: Home

We bought the Brain Food for our son for his fourth birthday, and I was so curious about it we had to pry the can open before the big day arrived. I say pry, and I mean pry - the product had spread itself around the inside during shipping and it exerts a strong hold on the inside of the lid.Fortunately it comes off cleanly once you give it a strong pull. Once we got it open my husband and I couldn't put it down. I bought teal and pearl, so we each had a generous handful to stretch and mold. The texture is plastic, exactly like silly putty. It's firm and solid when it's gathered into a dense mass, but pliable when you pull and stretch it. There's a lot of it in a can and because of the swirling metallic color, you can see the visual evidence of the motions you went through to mold it - which makes it much more fun. I showed it to my ten year old daughter and her seven year old friend and they couldn't stop playing with it either. In short, this toy is a smash hit in my household and it hasn't even been touched yet by the intended recipient, my soon to be four year old boy. I plan to buy more colors on my next FatBrain order. I figure I need at least one for every person in the house!

Brain Food...sounded good
Posted 12/29/2010 by Ann Marie Fuccello

Rating:

Setting: Home

I purchased this for my child who likes anything slime-like. I thought this would be perfect. It received excellent reviews, was a top seller and came in a great package. The cans were very very hard to open. The first can I opened did not have a protective wrap and the product was a solid rock inside. The second one was also hard to open. The putty was not as soft as I expected... like stress-ball consistency only pliable. Comparable to silly putty. I liked the great colors and great storage can. The child hasn't touched it, it could be that it is just not soft enough for him.
 |
 |
A replacement was shipped for the defective Pearl Brain Food. Brain Food pliability increases with play. As it is warmed in the hands it becomes more elastic, more entertaining, and harder to put down.

The putty comes in a metal tin which is great to store in as well. Played with on various surfaces without any marks or "grease" left on surface. Just don't get it on the carpet!!!

I ordered 2 containers of grey matter Brain Food for when our grandchildren come over to visit. They have been here twice since the product arrived. Both times they have had so much fun. The children are ages 4,8,13 and 15. All of them enjoy this product. Even the adults participate! In the past I have made my own silly putty so was hoping that this would be worth the money I spent. No regrets! Some of what impresses me is that this product does not stain or leave any mess, it looks and feels just like new even after lots of use, and it definetly is engaging and promotes lots of conversation and creativity. I remain impressed!

I bought this product for my wiggly students to hold while in class. The kids love it and the adults want to play with it. My college age daughter appropriated the glow in the dark ganglia to take with her to college. Some of us are a little ADHD and it is soothing to squish it in your hand. As soon as I gave it to a student, he twisted it around , said that the putty looked like a snail, and proceeded to form two little horns on the top. He thanked me for letting him play with it. We got teh brain food for both my 4 and 6 year old daughters birthdays. At first they looked at it like what is this stuff, but soon dug in were having fun. Then the 9 and 11 year olds got a hold of it and they had fun also. It's very nice that it does not transfer color or pick up alot of fuzzys from clothes or carpets. The only negative is that when stretched to breaking there are little pieces that flake off. Overall very fun.

Brain Food

Rating:

I have two grandchildren, one 3 years old, a girl, and the other one is 4 years old and a boy. They played with the brain food for over 30 minutes. It was easy to shape and it sparked their imaginations. I liked how it flattens out in the tin container after each use. It was a big hit with the two grandchildren!

When we first opened the can, it seemed that the contents were damaged. The brain food appeared to have melted into the lid. Each time the can is opened, the contents appear to be stuck to their container. It requires a bit of work to remove. The can itself is difficult to open.

Pretty good
Posted 5/12/2010 by Marina

Rating:

It was a bit stickier than regular silly putty. If you carry the can in your bag at an odd angle (i.e. not flat), be prepared to put a little effort into opening it. The putty will slide down and stick to the top and bottom of the can. It's also not very easy to get out of the can, at least for a 4 year old. None of this is a big deal, and my son does like playing with it.

Product review of Brain Food
Posted 12/13/2011 by William B Bowen

Rating:

Grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, enjoyed playing with it. Not much in the can and we had to share so we just made little things. Doesn't seem to get on clothes as much as play dough. We had to stress that it isn't something to eat, even though it says "Brain Food". Interesting how you can make something and then watch it slowly "melt". We made snakes and coiled them around with their head sticking up and watched them fall over, almost as if they were moving. Like the consistency because it is not crumbly.

Brain Food Putty - Meh
Posted 4/30/2010 by Laurie Morella

Rating:

Not as exciting as it appeared. It is extremely firm and difficult to work with. For some reason, when I finally pried open the tin, it had apparently liquified at some point and spread all over all sides of the tin. Unfortunately, it was hardened again when I encountered it. I am prying it out of the top and bottom of the tin, where it has an exceptionally good hold. -OK, well that was good. It all came out in one piece. It is the consistency of taffy, without the stickiness.
 |
 |
If your Brain Food appears to have taken a firm liking to living in the tin, simply use the back of a spoon or similar object to pry it free. Although it may be stiff to the touch at first, Brain Food warms up quickly in your hands - pleasureful pliability follows!

I bought 5 cans of this for Easter gifts. The kids were 11, 13, 17, 18 and 19. Several of them have a need to fidget with things while sitting and talking or listening, and they love this stuff! I find myself playing with it too. We got most of the colors, including the glow in the dark green, which is sticky and I will be calling to see about exchanging it for another color. The other 4 seem great.

My rating of Brain Food

Rating:

We have all really enjoyed the Brain Food. It is perhaps glorified silly putty and more expensive, but you get about three times as much. This was very nice because, in my experience, anytime you see someone playing with it - you want to play with it yourself! My three year old son, myself and my husband all happily played with chunks of it. Our son mainly gave us instructions for what to mold for him! The container was very sturdy and won't be easily misplaced or broken.

Love the idea of the Brain Food. My kids really enjoy playing with it, and I do, too. The only con I have is that it can get stuck to material that you would rather it not, such as sheets. Even though the Brain Food came out with washing, it did stain the sheet. It is a great product, but I have learned to use more supervision when the kids play with it.

My kids are excited to take it on some of our holiday travels and because of the mess-free nature of this product, I am not nervous about allowing them to do it! We've only had it a couple of days so we can't vouch for its longevity, but so far it surpasses any other putty we've ever had by leaps and bounds.

My son has sensory integration issues and I bought this (at his request) hoping to give him a fidget tool. He loves it! when you make something, it is not static, but melts away. It's incredibly pliable and challenges him. Unlike silly putty, it will slowly 'drip' to the floor. There is a good amount in the tin and you can divide it into smaller amounts. It will stick in hair, but can be gotten out with hair conditioner.

my 10 year old friend loved this! She played with it til her mom made her stop to eat. My favorite part was that her eyes were lit up as she found several things to make in just a few minutes. Her 7 year old autistic brother tried to eat it right off the bat - not sure how his play with this will go, but was happy it's non-toxic, and the texture is surprisingly 'unsticky'. Residue won't be a problem nor will sticking or staining, short of being mindlessly ground into fabric or carpet.

The product is a great consistency. It does not stick to your skin. It is a little stiff to manipulate , and I found it tires the fingers a little. In my opinion it would be great fun for children who have stronger finger strength. It might frustrate someone that doesn't. That being said it could be therapeutic for someone with weak fingers or special needs. Over all I do love the fact that it is not messy like several other putty type manipulatives I have used.

My son enjoyed playing with it, stretching it and twisting it. I just wish that for the size of the can that it is in, there was a bit more. I expected to see a large amount of putty, and although there was a decent amount, for the size of the can that it's in, I thought that there could have been a little more. Overall, a great product that provided a lot of fun for a little boy and his Mommy.
