My kids really like them and have made some very unique designs. They are well made and easy to work with. The Dado Squares are very compact and can easily be taken along to grandma's or on a trip for something to do at the hotel. My only suggestion would be an instruction/design booklet with some ideas for designs the kids can build. Great toy!!!!!!!

My 6 year old girl loves to say the word "Dado."

The Dado products (squares and cubes) were prominently featured on the site, along with the awards the product received. The squares and cubes aren't too compatible with one another, so I was glad I popped for two sets of squares. The product wasn't the biggest hit of the Christmas season as I had hoped (in all fairness, we only had a couple of days so far to play with them, as I'm a single dad with 8 days of visitations per month). What she made turned out a bit wobbly (and yes, they were connected properly). When I went solo, she enjoyed the outcome, and supervised my efforts. Pros: We did have fun with the product. The Blue and Ice sets looked nice when combined. Great for children and adults. Inspired creativity with a 6 year old and her dad. Very compact and easy to store when not in use. Encourages planning (sometimes it helps to put a few pieces together to add to the structure, as opposed to Lego type blocks which are typically stacked one at a time). American made! Lead free! Cons: The Square/Cube incompatibility, as I mentioned before. (They were a last minute gift, so I didn't call FB Toys to get an answer). Expensive. Nearly $90 for the three sets. A bunch of plastic pieces that fit nicely in a shoe box. If it were in my budget, I would have sprung for four sets of squares and four sets of cubes to have enough pieces for some projects that would truly be awe inspiring. Its like spending pennies for the materials/manufacturing and dollars for the concept. Now that we have some, I'll eventually break down and get some more. I would have been much happier to pay the same price for more pieces, and would be inspired to buy even more. Part of the profits from the Pink Dado cubes goes to breast cancer research. I'm a Hospice nurse, and commend this effort. How about channeling more of the profits for charity? I think it would be a wonderful way to help teach our children the importance of giving. I told my daughter that Santa also gave some money as a gift from the children who received the pink Dado cubes to help people who are sick, so its an extra special present. She liked the cubes even more because of my comment. Made me so proud of her. Bottom line: Buy plenty if your budget allows. If not, one or two sets won't be enough to enjoy the full potential of this product.

I ordered dado squares and received them just about a week ago. My kids play with them for several hours daily. It is like they just cannot get enough. They play with these like they play with their wedgits- in alot of weird but funny ways. Ours have become "little tikes little people" houses with multiple rooms, a new way to watch a tv show (think goggles that sit on table), swords, castles etc. I am definitely planning on ordering more!

Dado Squares Are A Versatile Toy

My 3.5 year old son opened the package and immediately started building with Dado. He's combined it with other building stuff we have around the house. He's laid it out flat for roads for his vehicles to travel over. Seems to enjoy it immensely. Our only problem was the plastic casing the squares were shipped in cracked and broke during shipment. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: A replacement Dado Squares case was delivered to our customer.)

not sure what this is
Posted 7/8/2009

Rating:

We have used this once with our elementary children in our Sunday school. They loved it immediately! The boys (in particular) were excited about stacking it tall, as well as making a track-type structure on the floor. We happened to be using these blocks on low pile carpet and they stood well. I must say that when I received the tiny box that the blocks are packaged in, I was surprised at the cost versus the size of the item. However, the blocks are well made and I think that they will last for a long time. The blocks also go right back in the tiny box, taking very little space for storage. I like the idea of choosing from different colors and adding on to the set.

Good Creative Play, Limited Range
Posted 6/26/2008 by Julia Lynch

Rating:

This is a nicely abstract toy that allows for lots of creative, open-ended play. It's a toy that allows for some asymmetrical, some off-balance construction, which is something I always look for in a building toy. To my adult eyes, the options for putting together the pieces seem a little limited. But my sons (ages 3 and 6) are still finding new things to create (airports, houses, elevators, even worms and flowers). One set contains enough pieces to build something pretty cool, but just barely enough to share between two kids for two separate constructions. The pieces seem sturdy, with just enough flexibility to allow kids to jam them together without breaking. Know that the pieces don't lock together, so that they could fall off the construction if they are not supported from underneath.

Dado Squares - Fun for even a two year old!
Posted 6/2/2008 by Melissa Nowacki

Rating:

My two year old loves anything that he can build with. He's grown tired of the duplex blocks and tinkertoys, so I thought I would give these a try and see if they would hold his attention. So far, he really likes them. It presents him with a different kind of challenge than what he's had previously. The one drawback is that I need to start out the set for him so there is a way for the squares to balance on themselves, otherwise he gets too frustrated when they fall over. Otherwise, I think these are a decent value for the price.

I bought this for my grandson, and it was a hit, not just with him but with my son and granddaughter who was a year and a half. I know it will get lots of use. My son actually had the most fascination in them. I wish it came with a storage container, so there was a way to store them. They were larger than I thought they would be.

I had assumed, incorrectly, that they were much larger than the 2inch by 2 inch squares that they are. Overall, I can't say that I love them. Not that they are all negative - it is fun to build structures. I like that you can use your imagination to create whatever structure you want. But they don't engage my 3 year old as much as other sort of puzzle games do.

We love the squares and my 4 year old, as well as his little 18 month old brother took right to them - building and making tracks etc through the house ~ they are great for creative play. The Dado Cubes are fun for home play - and I have dropped a handful of the squares in the diaper bag to take to restaurants for table top play. My husband is in commercial real estate - he jumped right in as well and created some amazing "buildings".!

I did not purchase these as toys, I am a corporate trainer who uses the Dado Squares as various metaphors. I also have a set of Dado Cubes purchased at a Smithsonian gift store. That said, both are wonderfully well made. Inevitably, the adults learners in my training sessions love playing with them. I have been asked many times where they can acquire sets for their children/grandchildren.

I am a gifted teacher who purchased the squares for use with students in grades K-6. I have been quite interested in and surprised by how much attention these squares have gotten by students of all ages. The 5th graders today built amazing structures and then took photos of them before disassembling them. The younger students like the way they can fit pieces together with ease. The only request so far has been that they would like a second set so that they could construct even larger structures.

I expect this will be a toy that both my boys will revisit at times over the years. It's interesting, but doesn't hold their attention for too long. Product quality appears durable, even if it is plastic.

I think he'll enjoy this for several years......always a perk when that happens. NICE 'quiet time' activity while baby sister is napping! While he isn't a child with special needs, I do know from experience that this item would be beneficial to children with fine motor issues, spacial issues and trouble problem solving.

Good supplement to the dado cubes
Posted 12 days ago by Mary L Tan

Rating:

This product, as opposed to the Dado cubes, does not have a from until it is built. This is a good add-on to the dado cubes, or for older children (pre-school up) to play with. It can be frustrating for little ones, who may otherwise find the colors attractive to chew on.

Our three year old has the original Dado Squares and loves them. We have traveled around the world with them and built houses, rocket ships and who knows what else (he does!). The squares have provided hours upon hours of entertainment. We decided to try Dado Squares Ice for something new and were disappointed. They look great, but the plastic is more brittle. 3 of the squares broke. Fat Brain Toys offered a replacement set, and we selected another set of the original squares to replace the Ice squares.

We bought these for her 6th birthday in conjunction with the Dado Squares. She and my 2 year old will play with these for hours.

I originally got this with the intent that people might absently assemble and play with it while chatting. The "somethin' to do with your hands" idea, since I also like to fidget. As it's turned out-- folks are drawn to the squares and even in an out of the way spot, they will start assembling them out of curiosity. It has become more of a conversation starter than anything.

Dado Squares are a good addition to the Dado lineup. I already own Dado Cubes. My 3 1/2 year old son has enjoyed the Dado Cubes for more than a year. These squares can be added to the cubes to make even more interesting structures. The cubes only stack vertically, whereas you can use the squares to make them stack horizontally. The construction is solid. The colors cheerful. They are extremely versatile in putting them together. Your imagination is almost the only obstacle. (The only other obstacle to stacking is that they are flat, so they won't stand up on their own unless you have a cross-Dado Square to do so). Another plus is that they are very compact when stored.

My daughter (3) loves to build towers and then place her small animal figures in and on the towers. This seemed like the ideal gift for her. And the clincher was that these were made in the USA. While it is taking some time and instruction to teach her how to put these together, she is catching on. Also, I enjoy building structures with these, so we both have fun while I'm teaching her how to use them. Once we've made a masterpiece, she has a ball filling up the horizontal spaces with her little animals. I love that we can make such an enormous variety of structures. It's really limitless. Thumbs up to any toy that requires you to use some creativity of your own! This one gives you great tools and an infinite number of possibilities. Plus, I don't have to worry if I find my 7 month old mouthing a piece while we play. Love 'em!

Absolutely Love These!

As soon as the Dado Squares got here, my wife and I opened them. I walked into the other room to get something, and by the time I got back she was extremely focused on building a tower. We both played with it before during and after dinner that night. She built a structure that could hold at least 50 pounds (after that we stopped testing it. We were fairly sure it could hold much more, but didn't want to risk shards of plastic flying. We have already strongly recommended them to friends who have twin 6 year olds who are about to turn 7. One is extremely logical and scientific and the other is extremely artistic and creative. I think this would be great for both of them. I think the best thing about the Dado Squares is that they don't come with instructions and they don't come with patterns and sculptures to replicate. (other than the pictures on the box.) You're just presented with this cube of identical (except for color) squares of plastic and told PLAY! What you do with it from there is all up to you. You can't do it wrong. You can't make a mistake. And that is incredibly freeing for many children. Not to mention many adults. I recommend them for ages 3 all the way up!

I got the Dado Squares for my 3 year old niece in Japan, but I think her scientist father might be the one to appreciate them the most right now. Each Dado Square is solid, thin, and pleasantly heavy. I'm proud to send this abroad as a sample of American craftsmanship. My niece is more interested in pastels and animals right now, but I'm confident she'll appreciate the squares with her parents' help. This is a great toy for older, scientific kids or for littler children playing with a parent.

These are fun. My 3 yr old has made up some very creative games with the squares. He makes rocket ships, drops other toys through the open spaces, parks his cars in them, etc.

They look good. I like the idea that they can be added to - i.e. if a child has this and receives another it wouldn't be a problem, only an asset.

My 4 and 5 year olds received the Dado Squares for Hanukah and have loved them! They are not as sturdy as the cubes, so there is some frustration when one of their creations falls apart. Overall, this toy is fun and promotes creativity.

This is one of my 5 year old son's favorite toys. He loves building all sorts of shapes. I just wish they had pictures of more shapes because he loves to try to duplicate the pictures on the product box. I think they are such a great toy, so much so that I actually just purchased a large quantity for a local hospital because they are easily disinfected and will allow the hospitalized children, siblings and parents to enjoy while visiting their loved ones. Requirements for the donation was that the games need to be easily disinfected, not a chocking hazard for younger children and for all ages. Dado Squares were perfect. What more could you ask from a toy?

We bought these for an 8th grade Science Fair construction project. They ended up not being appropriate for her project, but they are colorful and fun to build multilevel projects with as long as the base only needs to be square.

Great Family

I purchased the Dado Squares for my 2 year old son, knowing my 4 year old daughter would get the most benefit from them now, and both of them were playing with the squares within minutes. It's amazing the level of creativity 35 plastic squares can give kids, but my kids made a series of mountain ranges, then went shopping (using the squares as their debit cards and the box they came as the keypad). My husband and I love family toys, and are really enjoying that we can build with the kids, and the options are so limitless that we've not even come close to building the same thing twice. They have proven to be very durable, since I've had to work with my son on not twisting the squares apart. I love that they fit so snugly, since it allows the kids to carry their masterpieces around. This is definitely something that as soon as it's put away it's pulled out again!

As a teacher, I look for toys that require the children to do some thinking and interacting while they are having fun building, and these squares, along with the Dado cubes fit! The children are never finished creating and they can work together to find new ways to make them work. This is a toy that will be fresh all year long.

We bought these squares after purchasing the Dado Cubes for our son. Although he is too young (1 yr) to assemble the set, my wife and I had a lot of fun putting them together in various combinations. Combining the squares and cubes provides almost limitless architectual options. I look forward to helping my son build his own creations. This toy is well made, educational, and most of all, fun.

Review of Dado Squares

The pieces are reminiscent of the house building cards we had in my youth, with the cuts on each edge to allow them to slip together. They are nice and sturdy. I think they will survive my grandboys handling. The only thing I would like is more "documentation" of more complicated sculptures, with step-by-step or group-by-group pictures to jump start those of us with poorer eye-mind coordination. It took me a while to figure out what turned out to be a quite simple maneuver. As usual, the boys are finding many things to do with them besides just putting them together in sculptures.

I also ordered the Dado Cubes in blue in addition to Dado Squares. My son immediately began to play with them. He built an iceberg and the Titanic. He built all sorts of things and played and played. His older sister (11) got in on the action too. I think this is a great toy, it's fun and it teaches logical thinking skills (of how to put things together, how to plan something out). I will order more Dado for Christmas.

Both my 4 and 11 year old children love Legos and other building toys. The Dado Squares have been a real hit! They use them with the Dado Cubes and pretend to build houses. Squares are hard plastic and seem really sturdy. The design is simple, and they stack compactly in a clear plastic box for storing. The box is pretty small and fits nicely on our game shelf.

Hours of Fun!
Posted 12/30/2007 by Fran in San Fran

Dado Squares were a great hit. The kids played with them for hours. They were great on their own, and also integrated with the other toys (e.g., They would build stages with the Dado Squares, and then use the stages to play with Polly Pockets, etc.) The kids enjoyed these more than the Dado Cubes. The squares pack into a fairly small container, making it easy to take Dado Squares on trips.
