Rating:

My kids really like them and have made some very unique designs. They are well made and easy to work with. The Dado Squares are very compact and can easily be taken along to grandma's or on a trip for something to do at the hotel. My only suggestion would be an instruction/design booklet with some ideas for designs the kids can build. Great toy!!!!!!!

The Dado Squares are wonderful! My kids (2 & 5) make all kinds of buildings and bridges with them. One of my reasons for recommending them is they store in such a small space. They easily go on all our trips.

They grow on you.

I bought these for my 6 year old son for his birthday. At 1st he was unimpressed with the box and didn't even open them. I was the one to play with them 1st and they are pretty versatile. Of course my son quickly took them over and now he wakes up every morning and builds with them for a while. He calls it his "brain training".

We purchased the Squares for our granddaughter's 7th birthday and she loves them. She enjoys building imaginative structures and designing patterns with color, so the Squares let her combine these interests. An added bonus is that the Squares store very compactly! We plan to purchase another set for our grandson in the near future.

Excellent plaything for the office

I originally got this with the intent that people might absently assemble and play with it while chatting. The "somethin' to do with your hands" idea, since I also like to fidget. As it's turned out-- folks are drawn to the squares and even in an out of the way spot, they will start assembling them out of curiosity. It has become more of a conversation starter than anything.

Good Creative Play, Limited Range
Posted 6/26/2008 by Julia Lynch

Rating:

This is a nicely abstract toy that allows for lots of creative, open-ended play. It's a toy that allows for some asymmetrical, some off-balance construction, which is something I always look for in a building toy. To my adult eyes, the options for putting together the pieces seem a little limited. But my sons (ages 3 and 6) are still finding new things to create (airports, houses, elevators, even worms and flowers). One set contains enough pieces to build something pretty cool, but just barely enough to share between two kids for two separate constructions. The pieces seem sturdy, with just enough flexibility to allow kids to jam them together without breaking. Know that the pieces don't lock together, so that they could fall off the construction if they are not supported from underneath.

My granddaughters enjoy creating beautiful designs with the Dado Squares. I have purchased three sets for my three granddaughters and plan to buy more to give as gifts. Dado Suares are educational, stimulating as well as entertaining. I love everything that fatbrain toys carries and will continue to shop here.

I purchased these for my son's kindergarten graduation. He and his younger sister started building with them right away and have been creating various buildings for days. A fun and creative toy that sparks imaginative play. I just wish they were a little bigger.

Dado Squares - Fun for even a two year old!
Posted 6/2/2008 by Melissa Nowacki

Rating:

My two year old loves anything that he can build with. He's grown tired of the duplex blocks and tinkertoys, so I thought I would give these a try and see if they would hold his attention. So far, he really likes them. It presents him with a different kind of challenge than what he's had previously. The one drawback is that I need to start out the set for him so there is a way for the squares to balance on themselves, otherwise he gets too frustrated when they fall over. Otherwise, I think these are a decent value for the price.

We love the squares and my 4 year old, as well as his little 18 month old brother took right to them - building and making tracks etc through the house ~ they are great for creative play. The Dado Cubes are fun for home play - and I have dropped a handful of the squares in the diaper bag to take to restaurants for table top play.
My husband is in commercial real estate - he jumped right in as well and created some amazing "buildings".!

I did not purchase these as toys, I am a corporate trainer who uses the Dado Squares as various metaphors. I also have a set of Dado Cubes purchased at a Smithsonian gift store. That said, both are wonderfully well made. Inevitably, the adults learners in my training sessions love playing with them. I have been asked many times where they can acquire sets for their children/grandchildren.

I am a gifted teacher who purchased the squares for use with students in grades K-6. I have been quite interested in and surprised by how much attention these squares have gotten by students of all ages. The 5th graders today built amazing structures and then took photos of them before disassembling them. The younger students like the way they can fit pieces together with ease. The only request so far has been that they would like a second set so that they could construct even larger structures.

Fun And Versatile
Posted 3/26/2008

Rating:

Dado Squares are a good addition to the Dado lineup. I already own Dado Cubes. My 3 1/2 year old son has enjoyed the Dado Cubes for more than a year. These squares can be added to the cubes to make even more interesting structures. The cubes only stack vertically, whereas you can use the squares to make them stack horizontally. The construction is solid. The colors cheerful. They are extremely versatile in putting them together. Your imagination is almost the only obstacle. (The only other obstacle to stacking is that they are flat, so they won't stand up on their own unless you have a cross-Dado Square to do so). Another plus is that they are very compact when stored.

Very nice toy. I got it for my 3 year old, but my 7 year old engaged with it more. He and I built some interesting structures. I expect this will be a toy that both my boys will revisit at times over the years. It's interesting, but doesn't hold their attention for too long. Product quality appears durable, even if it is plastic.

Dado Squares Are A Versatile Toy

My 3.5 year old son opened the package and immediately started building with Dado. He's combined it with other building stuff we have around the house. He's laid it out flat for roads for his vehicles to travel over. Seems to enjoy it immensely. Our only problem was the plastic casing the squares were shipped in cracked and broke during shipment. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: A replacement Dado Squares case was delivered to our customer.)

This is a second order of Dado Squares. My seven year old granddaughter uses the squares and cubes to build fairy houses and other accompaniments to her imaginary play. I thought so highly of her use for this toy that I reordered the squares so that she would have as many options as she wanted. I like toys that can really be played with and not just watched.

Fun and Creative Toy

My daughter (3) loves to build towers and then place her small animal figures in and on the towers. This seemed like the ideal gift for her. And the clincher was that these were made in the USA. While it is taking some time and instruction to teach her how to put these together, she is catching on. Also, I enjoy building structures with these, so we both have fun while I'm teaching her how to use them. Once we've made a masterpiece, she has a ball filling up the horizontal spaces with her little animals. I love that we can make such an enormous variety of structures. It's really limitless. Thumbs up to any toy that requires you to use some creativity of your own! This one gives you great tools and an infinite number of possibilities. Plus, I don't have to worry if I find my 7 month old mouthing a piece while we play. Love 'em!

Hours of Fun!

Dado Squares were a great hit. The kids played with them for hours. They were great on their own, and also integrated with the other toys (e.g., They would build stages with the Dado Squares, and then use the stages to play with Polly Pockets, etc.) The kids enjoyed these more than the Dado Cubes. The squares pack into a fairly small container, making it easy to take Dado Squares on trips.

Absolutely Love These!

As soon as the Dado Squares got here, my wife and I opened them. I walked into the other room to get something, and by the time I got back she was extremely focused on building a tower. We both played with it before during and after dinner that night. She built a structure that could hold at least 50 pounds (after that we stopped testing it. We were fairly sure it could hold much more, but didn't want to risk shards of plastic flying. We have already strongly recommended them to friends who have twin 6 year olds who are about to turn 7. One is extremely logical and scientific and the other is extremely artistic and creative. I think this would be great for both of them. I think the best thing about the Dado Squares is that they don't come with instructions and they don't come with patterns and sculptures to replicate. (other than the pictures on the box.) You're just presented with this cube of identical (except for color) squares of plastic and told PLAY! What you do with it from there is all up to you. You can't do it wrong. You can't make a mistake. And that is incredibly freeing for many children. Not to mention many adults. I recommend them for ages 3 all the way up!

I got the Dado Squares for my 3 year old niece in Japan, but I think her scientist father might be the one to appreciate them the most right now. Each Dado Square is solid, thin, and pleasantly heavy. I'm proud to send this abroad as a sample of American craftsmanship. My niece is more interested in pastels and animals right now, but I'm confident she'll appreciate the squares with her parents' help. This is a great toy for older, scientific kids or for littler children playing with a parent.

This is one of my 5 year old son's favorite toys. He loves building all sorts of shapes. I just wish they had pictures of more shapes because he loves to try to duplicate the pictures on the product box. I think they are such a great toy, so much so that I actually just purchased a large quantity for a local hospital because they are easily disinfected and will allow the hospitalized children, siblings and parents to enjoy while visiting their loved ones. Requirements for the donation was that the games need to be easily disinfected, not a chocking hazard for younger children and for all ages. Dado Squares were perfect. What more could you ask from a toy?

I purchased the Dado Squares for my 2 year old son, knowing my 4 year old daughter would get the most benefit from them now, and both of them were playing with the squares within minutes. It's amazing the level of creativity 35 plastic squares can give kids, but my kids made a series of mountain ranges, then went shopping (using the squares as their debit cards and the box they came as the keypad). My husband and I love family toys, and are really enjoying that we can build with the kids, and the options are so limitless that we've not even come close to building the same thing twice. They have proven to be very durable, since I've had to work with my son on not twisting the squares apart. I love that they fit so snugly, since it allows the kids to carry their masterpieces around. This is definitely something that as soon as it's put away it's pulled out again!

The pieces are reminiscent of the house building cards we had in my youth, with the cuts on each edge to allow them to slip together. They are nice and sturdy. I think they will survive my grandboys handling. The only thing I would like is more "documentation" of more complicated sculptures, with step-by-step or group-by-group pictures to jump start those of us with poorer eye-mind coordination. It took me a while to figure out what turned out to be a quite simple maneuver. As usual, the boys are finding many things to do with them besides just putting them together in sculptures.
