Information about The Learning Calendar

My 10-year old daughter really enjoyed her last Learning Calendar, so much that she asked for another one!
The only drawback is: her last calendar ended on Dec. 2008 and this new calendar started on Sept. 2008. There is an overlap of 4 months that we don't use. I think it would be better to keep it a Jan. - Jan. calendar. Maybe include a coupon in the back of the calendar to entice people to reorder the next year's.

I ordered this item for my daughter so that she would have interesting facts to take to school with her and share with the class. The response was overwhelming. She now periodically shared tidbits on the morning announcements for the entire school. I am thinking of getting another to actually give to the teacher for the classroom for Christmas.

The Learning Calendar

Rating:

This calendar has graced the wall of my Enrichment (resource room for above average students) classroom for the past 3 years. I even save old calendars for the WEALTH of info contained therein!! I mean, a whole calendar dedicated to HISTORY or Famous People and NOW SCIENCE!! Students love to look up what is going on on their birthday or whatever day they look at and then become engrossed with checking on more and more and more days!! We have used items found on the calendar to spice up our "Interesting thought" on our morning broadcast, too! I usually purchase several of these calendars to give to children of friends as well. WELL WORTH IT!!

Review of The Learning Calendar
Posted 11/5/2009 by Susan

Rating:

This was the first time purchasing The Learning Calendar. I like being able to use the calendar right away and enjoy reading the trivia and doing some of the activities with my child. My only suggestion would be to have trivia/history and activities on days like Easter and Christmas pertain to these religious holidays and include other faiths history and activities for their holy days of observance.

Love the content. I especially love the "future events" box to fill in the current events that will be on future calendars. It's a great way to start good conversations.
I wish there was some type of caption in larger/colored text to help kids contextualize the detailed descriptions.

Spectacular Science Calendar
Posted 6/1/2010 by Melissa from PA

Rating:

Setting: Home

This is a great calendar that you and your children will get plenty of use from. We purchased the Learning Science Calendar as a gift to our three children (ages 7-10) at the beginning of 2010. Each child enjoys the fun facts and creative suggestions the calendar offers. Many days my 10 year old will fill me in on some great scientific fact that he read from the calendar such as, "North Dakota is the only state to never have experienced an earthquake". The only con is that there's no room to write daily activities. This is strictly for learning.

Posted 11/29/2009
- OTHER

Rating:

Setting: Homeschool

We gave the calender to the neighbors who are home schooling. We now can talk to their kids and ask "What did you learn today".
-
The calender provides a diverse range of information, activities and starting points for learning. Our favorite feature is the space left to document what happened during the week that will be in the history books of the future. The experiments are reasonable and can be done with materials already in many homes or that are easily obtained.
-
If we were to make an improvement it would be to link the data for a particular day to another date in history to provide a sense why this was significant or its relationship to what else was going on in the world about the same time.

Excellent Resource For Teachers & Home School Families
Posted 11/23/2007 by Frank Falcetta

Rating:

We purchased this product for 'enrichment' of our Calvert home school curriculum. We keep an 'Interesting Journal' with the purpose of keeping record of random facts/information that correlates and connects to the curriculum content we are studying each year. This calendar is worth the money, if only for the fact that your child will get small snapshots of information that can later be connected to something they study in school or read in a book, or see on television, or hear in the lyrics of a song! Upon receipt of this product, our first task (at the request of our 10 year old) was to go through and look at the information logged for all of our family dates (bdays, anniversaries, etc.). We had a great time just looking at the pictures and captions for almost 1/2 an hour. To date, our only disappointment is that for Nov. 19, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was ommitted. However, Sadat & Begin's peace talks were certainly crucial to our world, so we had an excellent conversation about that subject. AND some correlations to what impact the Civil War had on America as we know it today. Overall, this is a great resource and certainly meets or exceeds it's own PR.

The Learning Calendar is a great piece of work. History is fascinating and this product makes it fun to learn. I would like to see more scientific data, biology, interesting chemical facts etc covered. When the year is over, perhaps it would be a good idea to be able cut the day cards into study cards. It's hard because on the other side there are the following month's facts. Otherwise, I love the product. Keep up the good work. A Happy Customer.

Pretty Cool
Posted 2/22/2010 by Lisandrea Wentland

Rating:

Setting: Homeschool

As a homeschooler I find this calendar to be a wonderful addition to our projects & educational pursuits. The children enjoy looking up the historic scientific fact of the day, and it is typically something about which they know little or nothing--which leads to wonderful discussions! I only wish there were more experiments in the calendar--definitely needs one good hands-on item per month. We made the apple mummies in January, and they didn't produce quite the results we were hoping for. February...no experiment. Still, it's a great item--large enough for the kids to read from easily. Thanks.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter but have to say that my 51 year old husband couldn't put it down on Christmas Day. He quizzed myself and my daughter throughout the day and would read us the different trivia. I found the information in this calendar to be very unique compared to other trivia type books I have read. It covers a variety of subjects, is interesting, and fun. I think teachers would greatly appreciate having this in their classroom. It would be of interest to both boys and girls and even adults. I would even like to see a daily Learning Calendar so I can tear off a page each day and tuck it in with my daughter's lunch box so she could share and have fun with her friends. I highly recommend this item and look forward to buying future editions.

I purchased this for my 5 year old daughter that is VERY into science. I realized upon purchasing that the calendar may be a bit advanced for her age; however, together we can not only learn fun facts, but she can work on skills (counting, days of week, months of year, etc.) Definetley a GREAT buy!!!

I purchased this calendar for my 7 year-old daughter. It's a little advanced for her since she doesn't get all the references, but it's a great conversation starter, and she loves checking it every day. It's a great introduction to science and history. I think she'll be able to understand the 2010 science theme more than the 2009 inventions theme so we're looking forward to flipping the page to the new year.

My 12 year old grand-daughter loved this gift. She enjoys keeping track of days and events, and checks a calendar each day. This calendar has a different fact to learn every day to make things even more interesting. Sixteen months are included in the calendar, making it even better. She didn't have to wait until January 1 to start using it.

It has been great so far. I wish I had it since January so we would have more use out of it. I liked it so much, I bought an additional one for my son's teacher who is in a magnet school, and I use mine to homeschool the other boys. She reads the fact for the day, and incorporates it into the students morning writing lesson. I do wish there were different grade levels of fun facts depending on the age group of the child - like 4-6, 6-10, etc.

I have gotten this calendar every year since 2003, and still love the daily events listed. I liked the heavier paper stock and staple-binding of previous years; the paper of this year's edition is too lightweight, and doesn't have the same high-quality feel. Would appreciate it if they could switch back to better paper.

This is our fourth year getting the Learning Calendar and we love it. My girls look at it each day to see what interesting thing happened in history. I also see them looking ahead to the coming months because they can't wait to see what else has happened in history. It really makes history come alive for them.
We did notice that this year the paper is a little thinner than before making the calendar a little more fragile. However, the content is still entirely worth the purchase price.

I rated this a 3 because of the use for my family currently - with a 2 & 4 year old boy, they are not as interested in the history/info yet. I also wish there was more room in the date to write events down. I like and will use the craft ideas given in most months. As a former high school history teacher this is a great resource for a classroom. It is eye catching for the meandering student to browse through.

I homeschool 2 boys age 7 & 10. We haven't had the calender very long, but it seems to be working for us. As they are eating breakfast we discuss what the calender says for that day. The basketball entry prompted lots of interest and we looked up more information. Some of the other entries weren't as interesting to my boys at their ages. Perhaps if you decide to expand you could do calenders that are more focused toward specific interests or ages.

This calendar is full of information! It's fun to have a factoid to read each day, and spark conversations with the kids. The only problem is, most of the daily facts don't spark a lot of conversation, at least not with my kids! (For instance, Richard Nixon's birthday didn't get a big reaction.) I would prefer to read about events, even obscure/trivial events, that somehow tie into or increase understanding of life today. Overall, though, it's always nice to have another source of information and ideas, so I would recommend this calendar.

It's hard to judge on "Play Value" of this item since this calendar is more of a learning tool, but not a toy. I purchased total of 3 calendars: one - for my daughter's (she is 10) personal use and other 2 we gifted to her school for classroom uses. I hope teachers will implement information on these calendars into their daily classroom activities, so kids can learn something new on the daily bases.

I use the calendar in my classrooms. Students stand and read what's in each day. Some have tried to use the internet resources but our district's 'watchdog' software doesn't allow access - disappointing.

Great tidbits about everything. The message of the calendar
is global and touches science, nature, and
responsibility as Earth's caretaker.
There is space that surrounds the month's name. I hope a future edition would use up the space to house one large image
that would emphasize or synthesize some of the factoids. The month's name could easily be printed in the bottom blank Margin instead of on the top.

This is so cool!

An hour and a half later I realized that they, and my 11-1/2-year old grandson had been reading them almost since they had finished opening all of their remaining gifts! I consider this an amazing, across-the-board, equalizing education. I highly recommend the calendar...even for those children who cannot read really well yet. Just because they can't read doesn't mean they don't comprehend the content! Great product!

What a great way to spark a child's (or adult's) brain to think and ask questions and go deeper to learn more. And the subjects are so varied that this calendar will hit on the natural interests of any child so that they broaden their range of knowledge. Given the state of public education in this country, we need SOMETHING that encourages real learning, not test-taking! And this calendar will also start good conversations with parents and grandparents. I am looking forward to hearing my grandkids tell me all the fascinating things they will be taking in every day.

The calender looked like it was chock full of information....and it was. There is so much going on for every given day, that it's difficult to take it all in. My son has zeroed in on a couple of pictures that he found interesting, but the rest has just been a bit overwhelming. In addition, there is no room to use it as an actual calender, so it's difficult to indicate special dates on it....or otherwise make it relevant for him on a day-to-day basis.

But I read it and if I see something that my 3 and 6 year olds can relate to, I let them know in words they can understand. Then, they ask me questions, and more questions, and more questions....so watch out!...and know your history, science etc.! You will get quizzed.

Lots of information! Is it all "real science"? One problem: content is aimed at 10-12 year-olds. The picture on the cover of the calendar is of a 2-3 year old and therefore not appealing to this 10-12 year old set--especially boys. Also I was not aware that it started in August of 2009 seems odd. It would be simpler to have a regular 12-month calendar year. Good to have so many mentions of women but please be more selective- i.e.- Mary Austen was a great writer but makes no sense to have her used in a science calendar. Also please don't refer to women scientists as "girls." And although I am picky, I would buy next year.

The Smartest Calendar Ever Made!

Years ago I had considered homeschooling my children and purchased this calendar. My children and I loved to read the daily history. We even did the research together on the daily topics. When we moved, we moved to a better school district so I have allowed my children to attend school. We came across the old calendar the other day and my daughter (now 10 & a straight A student) asked me "Whatever happened to the calendar company that made this calendar?" She had recalled the fun we used to have together while researching the daily topics. We were both excited to see after searching the web that it was still in production and we had to purchase it! My younger daughter (now 7) is looking forward to participating in our daily learning. Each morning they read the "day in history..." and talk about it during breakfast. When they come home from school they quickly finish their homework and look-up the topic on the computer before they go to sleep. They have so much fun I don't think they realize that they are learning! THANK YOU for continuing to produce this product! It is a great learning tool for children and a great conversation starter for families!

We love our Learning Calendar. In order for everyone to get a chance to read it, we found the best place to hang it is in the bathroom next to the toilet. All it takes is 1 minute to read the daily detail. You'd be amazed to hear some tidbit of information come up in future conversations. Also, little notes about who was born when (like Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1841) help put history in context as my children learn about other events happening during that time period.

I had been looking for a calendar for work and stumbled onto this one. I teach middle school and find it great for work. There are those occasions when you need an extra "bit" to fill in those last few minutes of class and this is great because there is something for every day. The topics are varied enough that there is something for everyone. AND... if your evaluator happens to be in the room it is a cross-curriculum integration tool! Even if I didn't use it at work, it provides a nice bit of trivia to be able to spout out most any day.
