Not perfect, but really quite good

This rocket is pretty nice and relatively easy to use. The "burst membranes" are circles of thin vinyl. You can double up the membranes to increase the altitude, but of course you'll use up the membranes faster. We also tried using pieces of other thin plastics to see if it affected the rocket height. I wish it came with a punch of appropriate size to encourage experimentation with making new membranes of different materials, but I can probably get one from a craft supplier. The launcher base is mostly high-density foam, so I imagine it might be easily torn or disfigured if it's not stored well. I think if I use this again I'll buy a full-size bike pump or foot pump, as it took quite a bit of pumping (for a kid) to launch. If it were one with an in-line pressure gauge it would be easier for a kid to know they were getting close to launch, as it automatically launches when the membrane bursts. I bought some stomp rockets at the same time, and these were so much faster to launch that it was easier to do impromptu experiments with angle, pressure, drag, fins, etc. I wouldn't expect that a kid would play with this over and over all day, as they might a stomp rocket, but if you want a relatively high altitude without going to the expense, trouble, fire, and unpredictability of a solid fuel model rocket I would really recommend this.

The toy was great and our 10 year old nephew loved it. It is so unique from all the fad toys that are all over the place. It was such a hit!

Air Burst - A Big Bust!
Posted 7/22/2008 by Mitsuko Tamas

Rating:

This product worked a grand total of one time. With our grandchild eagerly watching, we set up the rocket in an open field, put one membrane in the cylinder, and watched in awe as the missile went flying straight up about 50 feet! Then we retrieved the missile, placed another membrane, readied everything as before, and then, with much anticipation, no matter how hard we pumped, nothing happened! We spent time making sure everything was as before, nothing was broken, there was no dirt in the mechanism, there was only one membrane and not two or more, etc. etc. After almost an hour of fiddling, as our grandchild got increasingly bored and then impatient, we gave up.
We offered our customer apologies for the flying fiasco, and a replacement or credit for the defective rocket.
