I was really looking forward to watching my children put their imagination to work with the calculator cash register. Unfortunately, the number pad stopped working. I returned it and ordered another calculator cash register only to have the same thing happen. I spoke to a representative from Learning Resources, the manufacturer. They were aware of the problem and are sending a new shipment.

Fun Cash Register

It's very well made, and just what I had in mind. We are doing a lot of role-playing and teaching money skills with it. Maybe we'll even use it to run a lemonade stand next summer.

My 6 year old has been building a grocery store in our barn for 3 months complete w/a sign, shelving, products (taking things from the recycle bin) and making fruit out of paper, etc.. She also loves math and is going into first grade so having the pretend money and the cash register was the perfect addition to A.W.'s Market.

Great Toy - Quality Issue?
Posted 8/19/2008 by Adam Grosser

Rating:

If it worked, my daughter would have loved it. Sadly, the calculator portion of the cash register was non-functional on arrival, which severely impacted the quality of play. (Note: Fat Brain Toys should always add up to nothing less than a good investment. We gladly shipped a replacement cash register for our customer.)

Our Expectiations Have Been Met

I purchased this toy for my 4 year old daughter who loves to pretend play. She loves pretending to be a clerk, or a customer (by having me do a clerk) at a grocery store. She uses her other toys like grocery items, a shopping cart, and her little purse to play. This toy also lets her familiarize with a basic concept of economics (I mean, she learns that she needs money to buy something), and also with numbers (adding, and subtraction in later years). The only shortcoming I found for this toy is that she has to push the button quite hard to open the register automatically. But so far it won't discourage her from playing with this wonderful toy.

The cash register I bought is great. I bought it so my grandchildren can play store when they come to visit. It is easy for them to handle and it works well for their little hands.

Calculator Cash Register
Posted 12 days ago by Joyce

Rating:

The Calculator Cash Register is well made, quite sturdy, bright in color and is intriquing to my three year old granddaughter and my 20 month old twin grandsons. It's part of their "make believe" grocery store and I do believe it will stand up to the use (abuse?) they'll give it! The coins have been put up for safety reasons for the boys, but when they're asleep the coins come back out into play. The coins and the bills look fairly authentic looking, which is nice for being able to teach "money values" to, at least the three year old.
Thank you for carrying such good quality items!

Loved the Cash Register!

It worked right out of the box, even though it's solar powered, and, even though it's been dropped a couple of times, (inevitable) it is sturdy and sustained no damage. Really glad I've bought it--all my kids have played with it (ages 13 down to 5) but my 5-year old and 8-year old especially.

A sturdy toy that has the basics

My 5-year-old daughter received this as a Christmas gift. This is a well-made plastic cash register that comes with a play credit card and lots of play money. There are no batteries required--the calculator is solar-powered. Actually, I believe there is a button-cell battery that powers a beeping noise made when the keys are punched, but I don't expect that to require regular replacement. We specifically chose this version of the Learning Resources cash register over another, more expensive one that is available because it does not require batteries or make loud sounds (the beeping from the keys is very quiet and not annoying). We also wanted something that allowed for open-ended play, rather than a toy that directed what the child should do (the fancier version apparently has electronic games on it). The play money is also fairly sturdy as play money goes. Our daughter loves to play store and restaurant using this cash register. We also play a game involving catalogs with prices printed in them in which someone places an order and has to hand over the correct amount of cash. This is a great buy if you are interested in something more basic.

My granddaughter is enjoying the cash register. She is 3 1/2 and loves to play pretend. I'm sure the calculator function will be something she will learn as she gets older. I love the fact that it's solar-powered!

we have a 2 and a 5 year old. we have been playing "store" and "restaurant" for a long time now, pretending a box or anything else was a cash register. i decided to get the real thing, thinking we would have fun with it, and they love it. the drawer "dings!" when it opens, the money looks real, and it will be a great teaching tool for math. and, since we do not have many toys with batteries (better for Earth and kids, i think), the solar powered feature was a major selling point for me.
worth every penny!

I loved the fact that this one was solar powered, and did NOT talk or beep - it lets the kids make whatever noises they want.
My daughter (7) loves it.

My grandson had been playing store using his desk as his counter. I got the idea of getting him a cash register when I saw him doing this. I knew I had seen one on this website at some point while browsing. Sure enough, I found it without a problem. The calculator cash register is very educational, and it works great. The play money which was included was an extra bonus. It was packaged very sturdy for shipping and it was ready to use as soon as it was removed from the box. Everything needed to operate was right there. The colors are great too because it can be a toy for either gender. I love this product.

By the day's end, the product would no longer display numbers. The kids loved the play money and being able to open and shut the register. I plan on returning it and possibly trying another one. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: The cash register's display is one of its great assets! We mailed a replacement register to this customer.)

The cash register looks attractive and is of a robust construction. It has been dropped by my grandson without any damage being noted. It is very well designed. All the buttons are easily accessible. The calculator does not require batteries and this is a plus mark. The whole package will keep it popular with a child throughout many years. My only quibble -which is quite minor -is that the button to release the drawer requires some pressure and the drawer slides out somewhat slowly. But maybe there is a good safety reason for this. Could I also suggest that when the drawer is released that a good loud distinctive bell sound is made?

This cash register is great for a wide age range. All the kids gravitate to it. In no time they were setting up a toy store - and learning. It was exactly as I had expected.

This toy worked for about 15 minutes before the calculator died. The cash drawer still opens and closes and my kids still have fun playing with the money so it's not a complete loss. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: Typical calculator lifespan is well beyond 15 minutes. A replacement calculator was shipped to our customer.)
