Love In Other Words Magnets!
Posted 8/12/2008 by Lisa Cherry

Rating:

Love this product. I also own the original set of magnetic poetry but prefer this one. We love the synonyms on the back and my children ages 8-15 are all having a blast with these magnets while learning at the same time. I usually wake first in the morning and put something together on the fridge. Throughout the day the children add to it or respond to it. We are all constantly checking to see what is new. So much fun! I wish all of the magnets were two sided like these. I'm still thinking of purchasing the Kids Story Maker for my 4-8 year olds. It would be nice if the magnets contained punctuation marks and possibly letters of the alphabet to spell your own words. Terrific product! I highly recommend it.

In Other Words
Posted 8/18/2009 by Jamie Barker

Rating:

I am a third grade teacher, and I love using In Other Words with my class. The words written on one side are easy enough for my third graders to know and be able to use. The words on the other side are more difficult and unfamiliar words. Not only is this a great tool for teaching synonyms but also for teaching vocabulary and so much more.

I purchased this for my 9 yrs old daughter as a fun way to learn new words for commonly used words. And we are having lots of fun with it! Each morning she puts words on a magnetized white board and then in the evening we switch the words to find out another way of saying the original thought. She is having fun and learning new words. I also purchased the original magnetic poetry kit to supplement this one. This is a keeper and something that we can use for a long time.

I am very happy with the magnetic poetry- we took down individual letter magnets to put up these words and my 4 and a half year old has been having so much fun creating new sentences! I love the fact that she can flip over the words and find a synonym on the back and I'm sure she will expand her vocabulary because of this toy!

I bought this set for my 8 year old niece and she loves flipping the tiles to incorporate a more impressive word into her sentence. As an elementary school gifted & talented resource teacher, I think this is an easy, effective way to introduce children to new (and better) vocabulary choices in a self-directed way. They are more likely to 'own' the words and use them in their writing than if they just completed a vocabulary unit in a workbook. I'd love to see additional sets along these same lines.

I bought this for a small daycare center, thinking that the children could challenge each other with new words. That has begun, and we look forward to the day when they've got all the words memorized!

This magnetic poetry set is awesome! I love the two sided words that introduce students to synonyms for words they commonly use. These tiles are great for students who need a challenge. I will use these in my literacy centers this year. I know my students will enjoy composing poetry and sentences with them.

Great Therapy

My wife is recovering from a stroke, she has aphasia. Theses word stimulate her recovery by helping with word recognition. If she has trouble with remembering what a word means she can turn it over to help jog her memory. She works with them all the time.

maybe an innovation too far?
Posted 12/28/2010 by Ryan Gautschi

Rating:

Just as described. Two things leave something to be desired (although both were predictable, I guess).
1. Not as "sticky" as regular magnetic poetry, especially when while-on-black side is out. Not great on a textured fridge.
2. keep a dictionary handy! Unless you are prepared to give an extemporaneous explanation of the similarities and differences between crazy/demented, house/domicile, chocolate/cocoa, etc.
Overall I think I would have preferred a different set of magnetic poetry.

This was also for my almost 19yr. old daughter who was on an endless search for magnetic poetry for her dry erase board and my refrigerator. She comes home from college (45 minutes away) every weekend and the first thing she goes to is her dry erase board in her room and then to the refrigerator to form new phrases. She absolutely loves her Rock & Roll Magnetic Poetry Kit and her Magnetic Poetry In Other Words.

Magnetic poetry helps my first grader with her reading skills and she loves it! The sentences she comes up with on the refrigerator are amazing. Would strongly suggest this for anyone with kids to help with their reading skills and sentence building.

I think this is an excellent product. My son's 4th grade teacher uses them in the classroom to help kids organize their words into sentences. I bought a box, and we have been playing with them at home. We use them to make sentences, identify parts of speech and increase sight word vocabulary.

Color-coded words and phrases make "writing" fun and easy for emergent readers and writers. If the magnets came with some blank ones you could add your own words, and it would be even better. Overall this is an excellent product.

As a teacher and a parent, I'm always looking for fun products and can serve a dual purpose. My 3rd grade students were just practicing using synonyms for common words and in a separate activity were creating poems and sentences using the magnetic words during language arts time. Now I can integrate these 2 activities, and the kids have fun challenging each other to find the most interesting words. My 6-year-old son has been using them as well, and is learning new vocabulary. Great tool & toy!

This is a great toy! I bought this for my 10 year old niece, but all of her younger sisters are having a blast playing with it too. One 5 year old would hold up a word and ask what it was, then flip it over and ask what it was. She would giggle and laugh over every one! I loved it! I had a fun time picking out words to put on the magnetic board that would tell her how special she is and to wish her a happy birthday! What a great idea - being able to flip to the other side for another word! A great vocabulary builder!

The idea is very cute but much smaller than I imagined. Purchased for a teacher gift but I am a custodian & know how things this little get lost too easy. Including shipping I paid over $18 each for these so I really wish I had purchased one to see before spending that much for something that is too small for a classroom. Not sure what I'm going to do with them.

I purchased the magnetic poetry set as a gift for my 9-year-old niece. I was pleased with how quickly my order arrived and she has been quite happy with her new poetry set. I would definitely recommend Fat Brain Toys.com to others looking for fun and interesting educational toys for adults and children alike!

We love this toy! I bought it for my son's 6th birthday, and being quite the reader, he really likes it. To make the most of it, I'm going to have my 8 yr old alphabetize the words on a magnetic surface, so we can find the words more easily and leave each other messages on the fridge. This is going to be a long-lasting, compact, fun and reasonably priced addition to our "learning" toys.

i gave this to my 9 year old daughter. she enjoys it as does her 6 year old sister....and her much older parents. we have it on our fridge and write poems to each other. it's fun to flip over the words and see what you've created...and it does help build the adjective vocabulary. my only criticism is that it doesn't come with it's own magnetic board. it limits the flexibility of the toy...you can't use it in another room or the car. i'd recommend it.
