Fun game for adults and kids. This version uses words that are more understandable to children, but it's enjoyable for adults to play alongside their children, as well.

Apples to Apples - A Great Family Game
Posted 3/28/2008 by Amy

Setting: Home

Because my daughter is still learning to read, we play with everyone seeing the cards. Apples to Apples has all the elements of a great game. We think, learn and laugh a lot. It's helping my daughter improve her reading and her reasoning, as well as her creativity. There's no long setup. We can play as long as we like.

Great Game

Rating:

I have 7 year old girl/boy twins who function academically at opposite ends of the spectrum. This game allows sufficient range for both to fully enjoy, participate, and learn. We bought the adult version first, but it was a little beyond the comprehension of the twins. The Kids version is perfect. It really challenges them to consider descriptive words and similarities with other words/places/people.

Great game. Kids can play it independently even if they are not great readers. Picture clues are very helpful. My kids laugh the whole time they are playing.

My husband and I and two kids, ages 6 and 8, played for a good hour, maybe more, great family time. We try for family game night about two nights a week, and we try out different games. This was definitely a keeper. Simple instructions, it engaged everybody, got us laughing. A little hard for my six year old, who isn't a fluent reader yet, but we helped him a bit. We played three rounds, which is a good sign, and nobody mentioned TV, which is always a good sign. My husband and I agreed this had been a very good choice.

Apples to Apples Kids Used in Speech Therapy
Posted 12/10/2007 by Jennifer Thomas

Rating:

We have been using this game for my middle school language students and we've really enjoyed ourselves. It inspires creativity in children who I wasn't sure had the strongest capacity for creativity. They are proud of their answers and quick to prove why their's is the best one to choose. Some of the words have been difficult for them to read and rarely will one of them not recognize a popular icon like "teletubbies" for instance. This has only been a minor problem, but I had to give it four stars due to some of the reading skills necessary for a few cards. Overall, we have absolutely enjoyed how every single game is different even with the same hand of cards.

Great Mixed Age Group Game
Posted 12/7/2007 by Suzanne Mitchell

Rating:

This game is a great game for mixed ages, young and not so young wanting to play a game together. It was all the good things I had heard about Apples to Apples.
Fat Brain Toys is an excellent shipper. Keep me in the loop from the order to deliver. High praise for both the company and the game!

Great Game for Beginning Readers
Posted 12/3/2007 by Sandy L.

Rating:

This game is simple to understand and fun to play with a mixed group of adults and children. The kids get good practice reading words and phrases. When we played, everybody got a good laugh at some of the combinations. ("Is a mailman juicy?") One small complaint, the card holder is poorly designed. It's made of flimsy plastic, and if you're not careful when you slide it to the next player the cards end up dumped on the table. I suggest ignoring the holder and just putting the cards in piles on the table.

Wonderful game! I have a soon to be 6 year old and we played this game over the Thanksgiving holiday with our family. They all loved it! As a bonus, we have a German Au Pair and this game really helped her with her English! It was really neat to see her and my son working together to get the best answers to the green card.

We Love This Game!

My son absolutely loves games, and we thought we'd seen everything....until we found Apples to Apples Junior! He just turned 6 and it was a birthday present. He understood the rules right away, and our whole family enjoys playing even though the game is technically for kids. It really challenges you to think analytically and to make comparisons and distinctions as you take your turn being the judge.

Just as Much Fun as The Original

We love Apples to Apples and finally our kids can join in the fun! I also like the fact that these cards are different from the other Apples to Apples Jr. set, so both games can be combined as our kids get older.

Apples to Apples Junior is so much fun! We are going to purchase it for our nephew's birthday present. It's a fabulous vocabulary builder and great family time spent together away from TV. Imagine a family spending Friday nights playing a game together, conversing, laughing, and talking, rather than zoning out in front of the TV? WOW, what a concept!

We purchased this game for our 5 year old (early reader) but we've all gotten in on the act! Mom, Dad, Grandmas, Aunties and our 7 year old play game after game. Very easy to "set up" and the rules are a snap to learn, too.

Love This Game!

Just open the box, deal the cards, and you're ready for instant family fun! Our family of four enjoys playing this game. We first played this when our youngest was four years old and could not even read. She would select a card for judge that somethimes was not even close to the subject and got us all rolling on the floor laughing but other times she was chosen the winner of the round! It really helps the kids with expand their vocabulary and thinking skills. And, everyone gets a chance to be the judge.

Rating:

Great game to play around the kitchen table with the kids! At first, the young ones are quite literal and try very hard to match the word with a phrase that's in their hand. As they get the hang of the game, they get a lot more imaginative and that's when the laughs began. Some of their arguments as to why they selected what they did are a riot. It's very fun, as a parent, to listen to how your child thinks and reasons in a fun and playful game.

I bought this game for my grandchildren, ages 5, 8, 9, 12 & 13. They love it & play all the time. It doesn't take long for a game so they pull it out whenever they come over. I have lots of fun playing it too & they love to have me join them.

Great Family Game!

Rating:

My children ages 11, 8 and 5 have thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Even though my 5 year old can't read the cards, he plays on someone else's "team" or someone just helps him pick a card to play. The game really gets the kids thinking. Plus it's very entertaining, especially when the cards don't exactly match and you have to just be silly. We've also played the game with another family and it was even more fun with more players! I would highly recommend this game to any family! I'm certain we'll buy the adult version when my children are older.

Apples to Apples Jr

Rating:

My non reading eleven year old has taken off on word comprehension with this game. The frequent repetion of the words and the variety of ways to look at the words has also helped increase her vocabulary. I had initially bought the Party Box but it was too advanced. I am glad I went ahead and ordered the Jr version.

A Great Game for Children

Apples To Apples Jr. is an excellent game for children. We played the regular Apples To Apples game with adults and children, ages 7 and 11. The 11 year old didn't have much trouble with the words, but the 7 year old did. So I ordered the Jr. version of the game, and now they both can play and enjoy it. It's a non-competitive game, and also has some educational aspects to it. Plus it's just fun and funny...

I learned of this game when visiting family. The kids, aged 4 to 10 loved it and so did the adults playing with them. Even if your child cannot read, it is easy to play and easy to help them with their cards. Very fun and comical.

This is a great game for early readers. Players try to choose the card in their hand that best fits a descriptive word. It encourages language development through use of synonyms, comparisons and descriptions. It also is lots of fun and is a great family game. My 7 year old and his 8 and 9 year old cousins play it independently (always a plus!)

Apples to Apples Junior!
Posted 11/2/2006 by L. Olson

Rating:

This is an easy-to-learn, fast-paced fun game for kids. I am a speech-language pathologist using it in small groups. Works best for independent readers (late second or third) since there are no picture clues, and you need a minimum of three players. Fun, fair, interactive, good for giggles. The Green Apple topics are descriptive adjectives such as fuzzy, slippery, fast. From your hand of five Red Apples, you pick the card that you think goes best with the Green Apple card. Red Apples cards have nouns such as kittens, Beanie Babies, oatmeal. The card decks and packaging are durable.

Great Family Game

I purchased this game for a friend's child, but we have it, too. It is a wonderful game to play with a mixed-age group of children and adults. We always end up laughing over the funny comparisons that come up. All the players need to be able to read a little, but sometimes we help our youngest son (age 6) with the harder words. This game allows adults to play against children (and win!), but it also helps children learn to see things from another person's point of view. My other son (aged 10) likes to play with his group of friends. They laugh and laugh over their answers.

I Like It
Posted 10/26/2006 by SB

I love the grown up version. This version has the sorts of words kids will be able to use. It teaches them lateral thinking as they consider different interpretations of words they use every day. I suggest a grown up play along to keep the discussions from deteriorating into arguments. But really, kids and grown ups playing together is more of a positive than a negative.
