The faux-brick, stairs and roof blocks are all a lot of fun. They make the structures built out of our standard blocks. These seem extra exciting.

Great Toy
Posted 10/30/2008 by Mom from NYC

Rating:

We ordered these blocks after the education director at our daughter's preschool told us that girls who play with blocks on a regular basis are better at math when they are older (algebra and geometry in particular). Our 2.5 year old daughter has used them to build towers and then knock them down, create homes for her plastic animals and she likes to build (with our help) chairs for herself and her dolls.

My kids, ages 2 and 4, love these blocks. They are well built. The shapes encourage complex designs. If you want your kids away from all the video type toys and back to basics, then get these blocks.

Grandson's delight

We bought the Architectural Unit Block set and another Standard Unit Block set to add to a Melissa and Doug Standard Unit block set we bought last year for our grandson. When he visits he spends hours each day making ever more elaborate constructions and seeking to make those structures taller and taller. On his last visit he lamented he did not have more blocks because he had great ideas for even bigger projects. Now he will have twice as many more as he did on his last visit. We can't wait to see what he comes up with over the next couple of years.

Great set of blocks
Posted 12/30/2008 by D Schulte

Rating:

We purchased this set of blocks to supplement our set of standard unit blocks. From the instant our 4-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son saw these blocks they wanted to build with them. Both children loved the shapes, especially the columns. The shapes of the blocks encouraged our daughter to be more creative and to utilize more planning in the building of her structures. The blocks themselves are very sturdy and smooth. They are a good weight for building. Our children had no problem stacking them and creating very tall structures. When the storage box is fully packed, it is heavy to move, but our children just slid the box along the floor and weren't discouraged by the weight at all. Overall, a very good quality set that I would recommend to anyone interested in purchasing blocks.

My children I bought the blocks for are 7 and 11 and do imaginative play with toys animals, fantasy figures and soldiers of all epics. The prefab castles are nice but weren't flexible enough to become other things. These blocks work because they are unusual.

The item was a birthday gift for a one-year-old - a friend's child - so he hasn't yet started to play with the blocks.

Quality Like This Is A Rare Find

My main reason for purchasing these blocks was because they are made of wood, so can stand up to many years of abuse from the kids. Melissa and Doug have also quietly made their way into my life. I can safely say that very few companies offer toys of their "old school" charm and character.
