Rating:

Our 19-month-old daughter loves this one. The latches are great, mounted well. The little doors that open and have critters to count is great as well. If your child is getting interested in doors and locks around the house, then they'll definitely like this activity board.

My rating of Latches Board

this is a great toy. My students are mentially challenged and most of them have fine motor skill problems so this is really great for them. My 5 year old had to work on a couple of the locks to figure them out. This is a great product and well worth the money I paid for it which I thought was reasonable.

Accurate, but not "appealing"
Posted 10/22/2009 by Rebecca Owens

Rating:

This is a great product! Not only is it excellent for fine motor practice, and fun for the child (my grandson is 18 months old), it is colorful and visually attractive. I was a preschool teacher, and my husband and I created a similar board for my classroom. The kids loved the activity, but my board was not so colorful. This one is well constructed, and my grandson will love it! He enjoys latching his carseat, his father's briefcase, and his high chair belt, so the timing of this board is perfect. I am very impressed by the level of quality of the Melissa and Doug latches board, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase other items by this manufacturer.

Grandson's Favorite

A great idea for a puzzle. My 19 month old grandson loves it. Unfortunately, one of the puzzle pieces was closed so tightly that his father had to pry it open with a screwdriver and has to sand it down quite a bit for it to work properly.

Great toy for toddler
Posted 2/25/2010 by Dallas Mom

Rating:

I got this for my 16-month old and it was an instant hit. She initially got a little frustrated at not being able to open certain latches herself, but over time, she perfected them all. The hardest to open for her was the second one (blue dogs). Parental supervision is needed for this toy, especially if the users are as young as mine because fingers can get caught easily. A great toy and I would recommend it. Great at teaching colors and numbers.

Favorite toy!

The Latches Board keeps my 2 yr old entertained for long periods of time and many times throughout the day, as he continually returns to it. He even tried to drag it along with us the first day it came. Although the latches are metal, which may bother parents, if they were plastic or some other material kids wouldn't be as drawn to play with it. Just like when you give them a fake phone or keys and they still insist on playing with the real thing. Some of the latches are more challenging than others, which means that they can develop mastery skills and it will be a gift they can grow with. Totally worth the money, I recommend it to all my friends. One last note, my son is very coordinated and is really into the mechanics of things, taking stuff apart, screwing things together, and so on, so I am sure kids who have similar interests will enjoy it the best, however, this is a great toy to build fine motor skills in any child.

The latches board was very high quality. All of the hinges and latches were brass. My grandson is only 15 months old and the age for this toy was 3+. However, he loved opening and closing all the doors. He can learn his colors and numbers with this board as well. This is a toy he can have fun with now and grow into the latching parts as he gets older. I would recommend this toy to anyone. I was very happy with it and so was my grandson.

This "puzzle" is very sturdy and well constructed. The colors are vibrant and engaging. My twins (31 months - boy and girl) have played with it extensively so far with no signs of slowing. This is a great toy to work on "sharing" and taking turns as each task has a defined beginning and end. Children can also play simultaneously making it versatile depending on the ages and cooperation level of the children playing. Especially nice - no pieces to lose!
It is a little heavy (wood construction) if dropped on a toe so caution is advised. That said, I wouldn't change this product in ANY way. It lives up to the Melissa & Doug branding and is fabulous.

Review of Latches Board
Posted 5/24/2011 by Leslie Dunham

Rating:

When I put the toy out for my 1yr old, she will play with it until I take it away (5min). I have to supervise her while she plays with it because it is meant for older kiddo's and there is one particular swivel latch that could pinch her little fingers. Even with older kiddo's I wouldn't let them play with it unsupervised because even an adult could pinch a finger with this particular latch. It might be bad if you don't want to teach your LO to open latches of all kinds, but that's why it's so interesting, because it looks like trouble to them I think. With all the little latches, and links it must seem interesting. I think she will enjoy it more when she get's a bit older. I put it up for time being.

We have thought about the idea of putting removable pictures of members of our family behind the openings of the 6 houses for his further amusement

definitely a worthwhile toy
Posted 7/22/2010 by Mom

Rating:

My two year old (25 monnths) played with this for over half an hour when we first got it. The toy continues to hold his attention, llikely because some of the latches are easy, but some are more challenging. He also enjoys naming the animals inside each door. The toy seems heavy duty and well made, the latches very solid and make a rather satisfying "clink" when snapped into place. Great for motor skills and observation/counting.

Well worth it
Posted 8/7/2008 by David Cooper

Rating:

The Melissa and Doug Latches Board is a great toy. My 16 month old son really enjoys the challenge of the locks, the beautiful colors of the board, and the surprise pals underneath the doors. The board is solid and though the latches seem "light" they seem durable enough for the job also. My only complaint with this toy, and is fairly commonplace with Melissa and Doug toys, is that one of the latches (the middle top latch) is very difficult to turn. M and D toys (I have a few others) sometimes put out toys that are difficult in their function. However, let me also note that any troubles I have had with M and D can easily be solved by their excellent support. I received a replacement for a different item within minutes over the phone and minimal personal information. That being said, this toy may not be the most phenomenal toy in terms of quality but on the whole, for the price, the overall quality and excellent customer service, it is definitely worth the purchase.

Latches Board and Basic Skills Board

Both toys are beautifully made and look very sturdy to withstand rambunctious play. They are intelligently designed and I am very excited about giving the Basic Skills board to my granddaughter this coming weekend. I am saving the Latches Board for Christmas.
I had finished this review box and was finishing the review scoring the Fat Brain Toy list at the bottom and had to come back up here and say that under the heading "encourages family participation" I can see Rowan's four year old sister wanting to commandeer these toys from her one and half year old sister. :-)

I purchased this for my 12 month old grandson - It was rated for not under 3 years, however, he can only play with it under supervision, and he is manipulating all of the latches and learning. I would think 3 years old would be far too old to start this. The board can be used in numerous ways, as far as colors, shapes, numbers, animals, offering much more value than just the latches, My daughter said...thanks for teaching him how to get every kind of latch open thus creating a little master of escape:) This is great for fine motor skills and provides such a sense of accomplishment!

I purchased two of these Latch Boards for my nephew's, ages 2 and 2 1/2, for Christmas. Upon opening the gift, they both yelped in excitement! Both eagerly asked for the toy to be opened, and played happily, even though there were more items to open. I thought the product was well made, and I am very happy with my purchase.

I purchased this toy along with several others for my 18 month old grandson for Christmas and some to stay at my house. This toy will be staying at Nanny's. Some of the latches were a little hard for him but with my help he enjoyed opening and closing the doors and seeing the surprise inside. This toy will last for through many grandchildren.

I was really excited to order this latches board for my inquisitive 14 month old. Although she may be a little too young to unlatch everything yet, I'm hoping that this board will keep her entertained for many more months. So I think this is a great toy for an 18 mos to 2+ year old. We were hoping that our daughter would try to unlatch this toy rather than try to un-babyproof the house...no guarantees:)

My son loved this

I couldn't get the board out the packaging fast enough. My 18 month old HAD to put his hands on it - quickly. The Latches Board is well made with metal latches that aren't flimsy at all. The colors are vibrant and attention grabbing. The only fault I could find - and I had to work hard - is that some of the latches, when open, can prevent some of the doors from opening completely. Obviously not a big deal - well worth the price we paid.

My daughter saw this toy in the lobby of her art class and she wanted so much to play with it but the other kids wouldn't share so I ordered it for her. She has played with it every day since it arrived! She loves opening and closing the locks and has memorized what is behind each door! Some of the locks are trickier than others but she keeps trying till she moves on or asks for help. She is 28 months and this toy is perfect for her!
The item had a few scratches and dust but was still wrapped in plastic so most likely a manufacturer issue.

This is a bright and colorful puzzle with fun locks and latches to open and close. I bought this for my 18 month old granddaughter to play with because let's face it all kids love to unhook locks and latches! It is well made and not to heavy and the doors open to show a variety of animals hiding inside. She is not quite old enough to open all the doors on her own but she is catching on quickly and loves playing with the puzzle.

This was for a one year old who is into and onto everything. When holding him one day to look out a window, he kept 'playing' with the window lock, pushing and pulling it. That's when I thought the latches board would be great for him. His older brother , just turned 3, spends a lot of time with the board, too.

We bought this toy for our 3-year-old son. The learning curve at that age is pretty short. I'm not sure whether this toy will be played with often. One of the latches didn't latch properly so, in light of its simplicity, we decided to return rather than exchange it. It would probably be ideal for a 2-year-old.

This item (latches) is one of those 'once in a lifetime' purchases because its extremely well thought out and made. Sturdy - I doubt if a child could ever break it. It captured my great-grandson's attention immediately and kept him occupied for a long while as he opened and closed the latches repeatedly. (His parents weren't as enamored over the gift because it taught the child how to open latches that they had hoped would remain a mystery for a few more months!!). Highly recommend this item for children in the 2 year-old range.

But I will disagree with that it is ideal toy on long road trips or airplane flights due to its weight, the toy is rather heavy. And I would prefer the animals to have natural colouring.

I really like the toy. My grandson plays with it a lot. loves working the latches and pointing at the pictures. Keeps him very busy. He is 18 month old. I feel it keeps his interest really well for his age. The only thing I would change is the order of the latches, for the following reason. The latch in the bottom right hand corner when opened catches on the middle one. He has a lot of trouble and frustration with this one for that reason. A couple of the hinges on the doors are bent already. I know it is happening because he pushes on them hard, but I was wondering if a stronger hinge could be used. Overall it is a great toy.

I wanted this for my nearly 2 year old son, who insists on trying to open anything with a mechanical latch. I saw something similar at preschool that was in the shape of a box that I liked better, because it seemed more interesting to the kids to get inside a box (rather than this flat puzzle). However, unable to find that toy online, I bought this puzzle instead. My almost 2 year old son really enjoys the challenge of this puzzle and is entertained by the cute animals behind the doors. I was surprised to find that my 4 year old son also enjoys spending time unlocking the doors as well. I would highly recommend it.

My 14 month old granddaughter started manipulating the latches the minute she saw them, even though she is quite a bit younger than the recommended age of 3+. The board is so colorful, attractive, and well designed that was hard to resist. She keeps going back to it often repeating all the necessary steps. And her playmates gravitate to it too.
The only negative I can think of is that some of the latches get in the way of closing other doors next to the latch. This could be avoided with a larger board, but that in itself has some problems - extra weight, space needed to set board on etc.
Overall, a very successful toy.

I got this for my 1 1/2 year old son, knowing it might be a little advanced for him. It turns out my 3 year old daughter loves it, too.
My son can't quite manipulate the latches yet. But he likes just opening and closing all the doors and looking at the pictures of the animals inside done in different colors. He has also started to figure out some of the easier latches, so I think with not too much practice, he will have it mastered.
My daughter, meanwhile, can do all the latches, and likes opening the doors to count all the animals. That's part of what's great about this - there are a bunch of different skills that are addressed. The pictures of the animals are different colors and there are different numbers of animals, so kids can practice colors and counting. So, for example, it says "one purple pony".
This is well made and I think it will hold up to years of use.

Product seems very Sturdy. The only concern may be the longevity of the pictures as I can see them wearing off overtime. The latches are all of the highest quality. My three year spent a good deal of time with it. It is not a toy that will consume hours but, the next day he worked at it again. It is one that I will put up and bring out after a few days! My five year old also took an interest in it and our 18 month old also enjoyed opening the doors once the latches were opened, so I am very happy with the purchase!

Purchased for two sisters, age 18 months and 3 years. They both loved it and it was large enough for both of them to play with it without fighting over it. Very sturdy and very well designed.

This is a great toy. We make sure we play with it with him and not unattended for now since it does have some sharp edges.
