Our 19-month-old daughter loves this one. The latches are great, mounted well. The little doors that open and have critters to count is great as well. If your child is getting interested in doors and locks around the house, then they'll definitely like this activity board.

this is a great toy. My students are mentially challenged and most of them have fine motor skill problems so this is really great for them. My 5 year old had to work on a couple of the locks to figure them out. This is a great product and well worth the money I paid for it which I thought was reasonable.

This is a great product! Not only is it excellent for fine motor practice, and fun for the child (my grandson is 18 months old), it is colorful and visually attractive. I was a preschool teacher, and my husband and I created a similar board for my classroom. The kids loved the activity, but my board was not so colorful. This one is well constructed, and my grandson will love it! He enjoys latching his carseat, his father's briefcase, and his high chair belt, so the timing of this board is perfect. I am very impressed by the level of quality of the Melissa and Doug latches board, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase other items by this manufacturer.

A great idea for a puzzle. My 19 month old grandson loves it. Unfortunately, one of the puzzle pieces was closed so tightly that his father had to pry it open with a screwdriver and has to sand it down quite a bit for it to work properly.

I got this for my 16-month old and it was an instant hit. She initially got a little frustrated at not being able to open certain latches herself, but over time, she perfected them all. The hardest to open for her was the second one (blue dogs). Parental supervision is needed for this toy, especially if the users are as young as mine because fingers can get caught easily. A great toy and I would recommend it. Great at teaching colors and numbers.

The Latches Board keeps my 2 yr old entertained for long periods of time and many times throughout the day, as he continually returns to it. He even tried to drag it along with us the first day it came. Although the latches are metal, which may bother parents, if they were plastic or some other material kids wouldn't be as drawn to play with it. Just like when you give them a fake phone or keys and they still insist on playing with the real thing. Some of the latches are more challenging than others, which means that they can develop mastery skills and it will be a gift they can grow with. Totally worth the money, I recommend it to all my friends. One last note, my son is very coordinated and is really into the mechanics of things, taking stuff apart, screwing things together, and so on, so I am sure kids who have similar interests will enjoy it the best, however, this is a great toy to build fine motor skills in any child.

The latches board was very high quality. All of the hinges and latches were brass. My grandson is only 15 months old and the age for this toy was 3+. However, he loved opening and closing all the doors. He can learn his colors and numbers with this board as well. This is a toy he can have fun with now and grow into the latching parts as he gets older. I would recommend this toy to anyone. I was very happy with it and so was my grandson.

We bought this toy for our 3-year-old son. The learning curve at that age is pretty short. I'm not sure whether this toy will be played with often. One of the latches didn't latch properly so, in light of its simplicity, we decided to return rather than exchange it. It would probably be ideal for a 2-year-old.

This "puzzle" is very sturdy and well constructed. The colors are vibrant and engaging. My twins (31 months - boy and girl) have played with it extensively so far with no signs of slowing. This is a great toy to work on "sharing" and taking turns as each task has a defined beginning and end. Children can also play simultaneously making it versatile depending on the ages and cooperation level of the children playing. Especially nice - no pieces to lose!
It is a little heavy (wood construction) if dropped on a toe so caution is advised. That said, I wouldn't change this product in ANY way. It lives up to the Melissa & Doug branding and is fabulous.

Great product - well designed and manufactured. I got it for my 11-month old because she showed so much interest in the latches holding curtain rods for the windows by my front door. She likes the latches board now and I know it will be even more intriguing to her when she is a little older.

A couple of the latches were a little bit difficult for my grandson to open. He just turned two. It is important not to leave the board face up on the floor so no one accidentally steps on it with bare feet. He seems to really enjoy playing with it!

I thought this would be a great item because she loves opening things up. However, most of the latches aren't challenging. One latch is so hard to open that I have a hard time doing it. Obviously since the board lays flat, the doors don't swing open but the doors blend together so my little one (I don't think) has even opened them. This was a great concept but didn't work for us.

When I put the toy out for my 1yr old, she will play with it until I take it away (5min). I have to supervise her while she plays with it because it is meant for older kiddo's and there is one particular swivel latch that could pinch her little fingers. Even with older kiddo's I wouldn't let them play with it unsupervised because even an adult could pinch a finger with this particular latch. It might be bad if you don't want to teach your LO to open latches of all kinds, but that's why it's so interesting, because it looks like trouble to them I think. With all the little latches, and links it must seem interesting. I think she will enjoy it more when she get's a bit older. I put it up for time being.

I've purchaced the latches product for my great-grandsons's Christmas. He hasn't seen it yet, but his grandfather, who is headmaster of a prominent private school for pre-k thru 8 has seen it and was the one who recommended it
We have thought about the idea of putting removable pictures of members of our family behind the openings of the 6 houses for his further amusement

My two year old (25 monnths) played with this for over half an hour when we first got it. The toy continues to hold his attention, llikely because some of the latches are easy, but some are more challenging. He also enjoys naming the animals inside each door. The toy seems heavy duty and well made, the latches very solid and make a rather satisfying "clink" when snapped into place. Great for motor skills and observation/counting.

The Melissa and Doug Latches Board is a great toy. My 16 month old son really enjoys the challenge of the locks, the beautiful colors of the board, and the surprise pals underneath the doors. The board is solid and though the latches seem "light" they seem durable enough for the job also. My only complaint with this toy, and is fairly commonplace with Melissa and Doug toys, is that one of the latches (the middle top latch) is very difficult to turn. M and D toys (I have a few others) sometimes put out toys that are difficult in their function. However, let me also note that any troubles I have had with M and D can easily be solved by their excellent support. I received a replacement for a different item within minutes over the phone and minimal personal information. That being said, this toy may not be the most phenomenal toy in terms of quality but on the whole, for the price, the overall quality and excellent customer service, it is definitely worth the purchase.

I had finished this review box and was finishing the review scoring the Fat Brain Toy list at the bottom and had to come back up here and say that under the heading "encourages family participation" I can see Rowan's four year old sister wanting to commandeer these toys from her one and half year old sister. :-)

I purchased this for my 12 month old grandson - It was rated for not under 3 years, however, he can only play with it under supervision, and he is manipulating all of the latches and learning. I would think 3 years old would be far too old to start this. The board can be used in numerous ways, as far as colors, shapes, numbers, animals, offering much more value than just the latches, My daughter said...thanks for teaching him how to get every kind of latch open thus creating a little master of escape:) This is great for fine motor skills and provides such a sense of accomplishment!

My son is 16 months old and really likes to open and shut the doors. 4 of the 6 latches he can figure out, the other 2 he is working on. But in general, he is truly fascinated with this board. He typically will play with it a couple times a day for 10 minutes or more each time.

It is a great product for 18 month olds up to 4 years old. There are different abilities that can be used for any level, so as the child grows they discover new things that they can do. For example, you can start off with colors and counting and progress to opening/closing some latches to all latches.

We had early Christmas last night. My two-year old grandson will not put this toy down. It is just amazing to watch their eyes try to unlock each latch and say what color and number is in each window. This is a very good sturdy gift for any child between ages 2-4. The other grandson, who is 5, enjoyed it also.

Captivating for my 2 year old boy. An excellent distraction to keep him away from testing the security of the safety locks in the kitchen, although I am concerned that his improved dexterity will lead to trouble once he learns how to open more things.

I purchased two of these Latch Boards for my nephew's, ages 2 and 2 1/2, for Christmas. Upon opening the gift, they both yelped in excitement! Both eagerly asked for the toy to be opened, and played happily, even though there were more items to open. I thought the product was well made, and I am very happy with my purchase.

I was really excited to order this latches board for my inquisitive 14 month old. Although she may be a little too young to unlatch everything yet, I'm hoping that this board will keep her entertained for many more months. So I think this is a great toy for an 18 mos to 2+ year old. We were hoping that our daughter would try to unlatch this toy rather than try to un-babyproof the house...no guarantees:)

I couldn't get the board out the packaging fast enough. My 18 month old HAD to put his hands on it - quickly. The Latches Board is well made with metal latches that aren't flimsy at all. The colors are vibrant and attention grabbing. The only fault I could find - and I had to work hard - is that some of the latches, when open, can prevent some of the doors from opening completely. Obviously not a big deal - well worth the price we paid.

My daughter saw this toy in the lobby of her art class and she wanted so much to play with it but the other kids wouldn't share so I ordered it for her. She has played with it every day since it arrived! She loves opening and closing the locks and has memorized what is behind each door! Some of the locks are trickier than others but she keeps trying till she moves on or asks for help. She is 28 months and this toy is perfect for her!
The item had a few scratches and dust but was still wrapped in plastic so most likely a manufacturer issue.

We haven't talked with her family since her party on Sunday but when she opened it you could tell her fingers and mind were itching to get hands on it. Party attendees adults and children were attracted to the board. Many comments as to were we got it and - we never seen anything like that. I did tell them about FatBrain website. Also, how quickly my order was delivered!!!

Our son is a little young to play with this as intended, but he is curious and plays with the easier latches. He likes the sound and I assume the ability to yank on these latches.
My wife and I love the colors and sturdiness of the product as we are finding out our son is quite rough on his toys. This one seems like it will hold up for a long time.

Once my daughter gets her hands on it, she does start playing with it, and is pretty focused on it, but she's barely 18 months and this toy is probably better suited for older children (perhaps 2 or 3) who can figure out how the different latches lock and unlock the doors. Overall, though, we are completely satisfied with it, and can tell how this toy will be one of her faves once she gets to an age where she has more dexterity and can understand how it works. It does come highly recommended, if your child is between 2 and 3 years old.

I bought this for my 18 month old granddaughter to play with because let's face it all kids love to unhook locks and latches! It is well made and not to heavy and the doors open to show a variety of animals hiding inside. She is not quite old enough to open all the doors on her own but she is catching on quickly and loves playing with the puzzle.

The quality of the locks and hinges shocked me! I was expecting them to be a lighter metal and not constructed as strong as it was- many other toys from other companies just do not compare to this! Highly recommend!

Good product. Great quality, colorful, great design. As advertised great for my 2 year old grandson. He is fascinated with the latches and works them over and over.

This item (latches) is one of those 'once in a lifetime' purchases because its extremely well thought out and made. Sturdy - I doubt if a child could ever break it. It captured my great-grandson's attention immediately and kept him occupied for a long while as he opened and closed the latches repeatedly. (His parents weren't as enamored over the gift because it taught the child how to open latches that they had hoped would remain a mystery for a few more months!!). Highly recommend this item for children in the 2 year-old range.

A board for a toddler

I bought this toy for my 14 months child. Probably a bit early for him but he occasionally plays with it though he can't open all the latches yet. I think its time will come in a few months. The quality is rather good. Each latch is unique.
But I will disagree with that it is ideal toy on long road trips or airplane flights due to its weight, the toy is rather heavy. And I would prefer the animals to have natural colouring.
