Rating:

It is hard to pound the ball through. I think once my child gets older he will really like it.

Tough Toy!
Posted 4/17/2008 by Sara

Rating:

While the Pound and Roll toy is a great concept, the actual toy itself is difficult to use. Pounding the ball through the holes is very challenging, as the holes are slightly too small. It requires a great deal of effort, much more than capable of a toddler. That said, my toddler enjoys trying. We end up working on the task together. So while not an independent toy, the Pound and Roll is great for bonding!

Fun toy -- good companies

The first version of this toy had a defect -- the balls were too big to fit through the holes. But with a short call to Melissa and Doug, there was a new one shipped out right away, no questions asked. We have the new one and our 14-month-old enjoys it. Sometimes, she pushes the ball through with her hands, sometimes she uses the hammer, and sometimes, she uses the hand of her favorite doll. It's fun to see her act "surprised" everytime the ball rolls down to the floor. She also enjoys picking up the balls and putting them in the holes. A good toy for the money.

Pound and Roll Toy Needs Improvement

The holes in the Pound and Roll toy were too small for the balls to be hammered through. It took adult strength to get them through the holes resulting in the balls being dented. My husband cut away the rubber inside each hole to get the product to work as intended. Because the balls are slightly different sizes, the green (smallest) ball now is too small for the holes while the other three can make it through. I would not buy this toy again. Boys With Mallets
Posted 12/25/2007 by Naomi Mardock

Rating:

We bought this toy for a one-year-old, which is younger than the manufacturer's recommended age of two, but our son knew exactly what to do with it and began pounding at the balls with the mallet. He also liked using the balls as a kind of simple puzzle, taking them out of and putting them back into their holes, and rolling and throwing the balls. However, he can't hit the balls hard enough to get them to drop through and roll out. Even the four-year-old has to really pound and now we have two boys with a wooden mallet.

My son is 10 months old and loves this already. He doesn't quite get the concept of pounding the balls through yet, but he likes the hammer to pound other things and he loves the balls. So I feel like this product will be a great toy for all of his upcoming stages.

I bought this for my 21 month old boys. They both really enjoy it. One immediately learned that he needs to pound the heck out of the balls to actually get them through the holes. It sounds like we have an entire construction crew in our house, but he gets so excited once he gets them through. It's difficult to get upset about the noise. My other son doesn't have the same patience to continue pounding as on the balls to get them through yet, but he still loves hammering for a while and then he enjoys rolling the balls down the ramps and chasing after them. I'm hoping the holes will give over time.

Review of Pound and Roll

Rating:

The idea behind this toy is a great one - young ones get to use a hammer to push brightly colored wooden balls through a hole and then watch the balls slide down the ramp. My son is quite taken with the balls themselves as well as the idea of a hammer. However, the actual hammering is difficult to do, both for him and me. It is hard to actually push the balls through the hole using the hammer and then the balls can get stuck in the hole and are difficult to get out. (Note from Fat Brain Toys: Melissa & Doug stand behind their commitment to product quality. Rachel was contacted with information needed to receive a replacement.)

Well crafted and beautiful. The holes are a bit tight at first but they loosen up. Good toy...good gift.

Even though comments about the Pound and Roll were somewhat negative, I purchased it anyway. Our grandson loves it! It seems the red and green balls are smaller than the blue and yellow so he has quick success in getting them pounded through the holes. He works harder to get the others through.

The balls are a little difficult for my child to pound through the holes. They don't always roll down the ramps; sometimes they just pop out the sides. However, for the price, I feel it is a nicely constructed wood toy that will loosen as my son gets stronger.

Pound & Roll is a Good Product for 2 Yr Olds

My son received this a few days ago. The "hammer" seems to be the biggest hit of the toy as he just turned two and likes to imitate dad with hammers around the house. As of right now, the balls are a little hard for him to hit through the holes, but he is trying. I'm sure as he gets a little older, he will understand the function and purpose of the toy and will successfully hit the balls through! As with all Melissa & Doug products we have tried, this is a good product and a hit with our son.

A Bit Tough for a Little Guy

My 17 month old boy likes playing with the colorful balls, but he does not really have the strength or patience to pound the balls with the mallot. I have to hit the balls very hard for them to pass through the openings. I also find that wooden balls tend to roll away under furniture. He might find this more interesting in a year or so.

I operate a children's playplace and this is the second time I have purchased this toy. The first one was very loved by the children here. It was played with by many children everyday and held up for 1 year of "hammering."

This toy arrived with a small crack, but with repetitive pounding it would break in half. Also, each opening fit so snugly that even I could not pound the balls through the holes. It would be impossible for children to do. If, it were in good condition and if you could actually get the balls through the holes, I guarantee that my 17 mo old son would love it.
(Note from Fat Brain Toys: A replacement "Pound and Roll" was promptly shipped. Pleasant pounding-resulting in rolling-is coming your way!)

Giggled with pleasure

I purchased this as a gift for my 17 month nephew. He giggled instantly when he saw me demonstrate how to pound the balls through the holes. He was excited to try it himself and succeed in pushing one of the balls through. Note that the holes are different sizes so that the level of difficulty varies. My nephew was only able to get the easiest one through - however, I think this will keep him coming back to the toy until he can do the others as well. I definitely consider this a successful gift.

This was aCristmas Gift for my grandson. I thought it looked like something enjoyable for him but without instructions I found it was a little confusing. The ridge that holds the balls you pound through...well, you have to hit the balls pretty hard to get them to budge...the first one got stuck and we thought maybe we were doing it wrong and that maybe they weren't supposed to be pounded through that way but ultimately decided we must have the right idea. My grandson just played with the balls instead of pounding them through. I was a little disappointed but loved the idea initially. It's still nice to have toys available without electronics, bells & whistles for a child to play with. I think maybe after the ridge wears down some it'll be more fun for him to play with. I still like the idea of this toy and have no regrets.

Pound and Roll Rocks!

How can I describe the squeals of delight of my almost 3 year-old grandsons as the brightly colored balls roll across the carpet following a good pounding? Once the ball releases, the boys celebrate the acheivement of a goal. Then it is back to work! This toy has been an excellent aid in the development of finer motor skills and in their understanding of pressure and force-tapping vs. (you guessed it) pounding.

The children love to pound the balls and watch them roll down the ramp on the bottom. They also like to just play with the colorful balls by rolling them to one another!
