This product was actually larger than I thought it would be. It comes in a handy box, and the pieces are very sturdy. It will last my daughter for a long time.

Great for learning lower case letters and beginning spelling
Posted 16 days ago by Katherine Johnson

Rating:

I bought this for my daughter's 3rd birthday and it was a great choice. She frequently asks to play her "letter game" and it holds her interest enough to go through all the words in one sitting. I like that the letters are different colors, so for a younger child, like my daughter, I can tell her what color the letter is that she is looking for, to limit her choices. There is at least one wooden letter for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, however, not all letters are used in the puzzles. So in order for your child to learn those letters you will have to make up your own words. That is my biggest negative of this product. I also wish that there was a cover for the box, to keep all of the contents inside without spilling when a child carries it, or to take it in the car.

Love it! My daughter loves it! Fun toy encourages spelling. She doesn't even realize she is learning to spell. I like the wood box and letters. Very sturdy. A hard cover would have been nice to keep the pcs from getting lost.

I bought this for my son who is 21 months. I know it was meant for someone older, but I just knew it would fit my needs. He is starting to learn the alphabet. This toy allows him to "feel" the alphabet, "see" the alphabet and then associate the letters with an object. He isn't really spelling anything yet, but he recognizing that the object BUS looks like "bus". Hope this makes sense. Anyways, we play it when he needs a little one on one time or the letters would be everywhere. I keep them in a zip lock baggie. My only complaint is that i wish the wooden cards had more variety of words that used most of the letters of the alphabet. But too much could be overwhelming for a little one. I love it.

Our 2 year old granddaughter is very interested in letters and the sounds they make. She is delighted with this toy. Our 5 year old granddaughter who is beginning K5 also enjoyed playing with it. The fact that it uses lower case letters was the main reason for I bought See & Spell. I do wish that more letters had actually been used it completing the puzzle boards. I am sure we will find other ways to use the letters.

My 3.5 yo daughter loves the See & Spell. She lined up all the puzzle boards on the floor and went down the row spelling each of the items. She didn't get every one of them right, but she had fun learning and that's all that matters. Highly recommend!

Beautifully crafted. Made in the USA. Colorful and fun! Provides practice with lower case letters, eye-hand coordination, and early word recognition. I gave this to my grandson for his 4th. birthday, and he took to it readily. In addition, I think it would make an excellent center activity at his pre-school this year.

We love this! Sturdy and well put together. Both of our children (23 mos. and 3-1/2) love to play with the See & Spell. Puzzle-adept preschoolers will marvel at how they can use their puzzle solving skills to spell words. Great teaching resource!

Great educational toy--my son doesn't even realize he's learning & thinks it's just a game! He's very interested in how to spell things right now & he's been working on his lower case letters, so this fit the bill for us. At first I wished there were more things to spell but we've been spelling things without them and he still loves it. The only improvement would be a box with a lid over the whole thing.

Great Educational Toy!

My son really likes the See & Spell- he is just over two years old, but is very gifted. I had seen reviews from parents of other two-year-olds who liked the set, so I bought it even though it is recommended for 4 and up. The only things that I find a little disappointing are the selection of letters- there were only one of several letters, and only 2 of some common letters like S and N. The "i" and "j" look a bit strange, with enlarged dots attached to the lines, too. If I worked at Melissa & Doug, I might have included a blank template to spell out other words, and featured a sliding lid, like the one on their stringing bead set.

This is a good and fun product for kids learning how to spell & read. The words are simple and perfect for those just starting out. The drawback is that the letters are already carved into the wood so the child only has to match up the pieces to the carved out letter. I recommend having the letters on blocks or squares so the child actually has to spell the word rather than put a puzzle together.

My son really enjoys both the puzzle aspect of this and the learning to spell these words. He also likes to spell new words with the letters. My other two of my kids are still young for this toy but the letters are great as a teaching tool for letter identification and phonics practice. We also identify the pictures.

I bought this item for my 6 year old daughter whom is developmentally disabled. This was perfect timing as she is just beginning to learn sight words in school. This was also great in working on her fine motor skills as she is required to manipulate the letter pieces in the correct position on the board. She has since played with this for hours at a time. The pieces are very durable, and you can wipe them clean with a wet wipe if needed. The box that stores the boards and letter pieces comes in handy, however I would have liked to see a lid of some sort that keeps them all in.

My 4 yr old really enjoys the See and Spell. Great reinforcement of letter recognition and introduction to spelling/reading words. The bonus is that she just thinks it's fun, she has no idea she is learning while she is playing.
The only drawback is that the box does not come with a top to contain all the letters.

Good But Not Perfect
Posted 1/30/2008 by Christine Lyons

Rating:

I have a 2.5 year old who seems to like the puzzle aspect of this a lot, but it does confuse her for a couple of reasons: 1) Letters are lower case and block-style, so the b, p, q, and d are too similar for her. 2) There are more letters than there are places to put them. I was glad to see that every letter of the alphabet is included (makes it easier to play ABC games with them), but not every letter of the alphabet is used, and my daughter doesn't understand why we don't use the x, q, z, etc. Even other more common letters are not used, but c shows up in half of the words.
And a small gripe I have with many M&D products -- they give you a really nice wooden box to put all of the pieces in, but there's no lid or any way to keep them all together. But that's not enough to stop me from buying their otherwise high quality products!

This is a great toy! It's fun and educational. My 4 year old daughter really likes it. The only problem is the packaging. You'd think since it came in a nice wooden box there would be some kind of cover on it to keep all the pieces inside. Well, it does not. You have to put the whole thing inside a very large ziploc to keep it all together. Great toy but not really thought all the way through.

Very Educational, My Daughter Was Spelling Out The Words!

These 2 sided puzzles teach kids how to spell. The child fills in the puzzle, spelling out the word. The child knows what she just spelled because there is a picture of the word next to it. My child stayed engaged. Loved "playing" this learning game. I would buy it as a gift for others.

They Call It Fun - I call It a Great Learning Tool!

Rating:

We love the See & Spell Puzzle! Both my children (ages 2 and 5 1/2) played independently and cooperatively with this simple puzzle. There are enough wooden letters to complete any combination of the spelling boards without having to undo any previous work. The letters are only painted on the top side so smaller children have no trouble orienting the letters. I like that the letters are lower case as sometimes manipulatives neglect them resulting in less exposure for our pre-readers. I like the choice of words as some use more advanced phonic sounds and vowel combinations. It is well made in the tradition of Melissa and Doug and I expect it to hold up well under use. The only thing I think would make it better would be more spelling boards. I think my kids would love to "keep going" even after they have filled in all the boards.

My son, who is almost 3 years old, enjoyed using the See and Spell. He knows his letters and was able to easily identify the pictures. I was able to engage him in identifying the words and then searching for the letters that spell the word. Since the letters are placed in indentations, putting the letters in was similar to putting together a puzzle.

Wonderful product! My 2 year old daughter just loves it. We set up obstacle courses where the final activity is for her to "solve the puzzle" and she will complete the obstacle course just to get her hands on the puzzle. Good idea but...

Rating:

The product is well made but did not hold my son's interest for more than a few play occasions. The way the letters are stored all jumbled up in one section of the box makes it hard for little ones to pick out the ones they need. Even if you spread them out on the floor, they're turned every which way and some upside down, so unless you want to turn every piece the right way to make it easier for your child to recognize, I'd say this is for older kids, 4 and up (which is what it says on the box). But at that age, I'm not sure how much fun it'll be to put letters into the letter shapes either.
