Qwirkle in Three Dimension
Posted 1/13/2010 by C S Jachimowicz

Rating:

Qwirkle Cubes is the logical reinvention of MindWare's successful Qwirkle tile-laying game released a couple of years ago. The games are similar in that players draw random tiles (or cubes) from a bag and attempt to place them into a matrix or grid of existing tile/cubes according to a few simple rules. The tiles/cubes feature six different shapes (circle, square, diamond, star, starburst and clover) and six different colors (red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple). In Qwirkle, each tile has one shape in one color. In Qwirkle Cubes, each cube has all six shapes in one color. The rules for placement are simple. Players are attempting to create lines in which all cubes/tiles in the line are either all the same shape or all the same color. Players may place more than one tile/cube so long as it shares the same characteristic (color or shape) and is placed in the same line as other tiles/cubes on that turn. Players score one point for each line of tiles/cubes started or added to, counting some tiles/cubes that are part of more than one line twice. If a player completes a line of six tiles/cubes (all six shapes of one color or all six colors of one shape), they score an additional six points for a "Qwirkle." The differences between Qwirkle and Qwirkle Cubes are simple, but significant. First, Qwirkle is played "closed hand" while Qwirkle Cubes is played "open hand." This means that all players can see each others cubes in Qwirkle Cubes, while the tiles orf each player are hidden in Qwirkle. This fact alters game play in Qwirkle Cubes in that a part of a player's strategy has to be how her playing of cubes will aid or hinder her opponent's play. One has to be careful not to set up the next player for a 12-point "Qwirkle" score!! The other distinguishing feature is that the tiles in Qwirkle are "fixed" while the cubes in Qwirkle Cubes are "flexible." In Qwirkle, a player is "stuck" with whichever tiles she draws from the bag each turn. Sometimes it can be a challenge to play even one tile for a good score. In Qwirkle Cubes, a player may re-roll some or all of her dice at the start of her turn resulting in new opportunities for play that turn. This adds another strategic element to the game: which cubes to keep and which to re-roll. Do you play it safe and hold out two cubes that you know you can play or do you re-roll all five cubes and hope for a big score? Qwirkle Cubes has done well with players as young as 8 and as old as 70. Some younger children may be able to play, but would require some assistance in choosing the best locations for cubes to be placed for a maximum score; in other words, younger players may understand the mechanics of the game, but may lack the capacity to see the strategy - in this case, Qwirkle is probably a better game. For those who have enjoyed playing Qwirkle and desire a more strategic game with the same simple rules, Qwirkle Cubes is a welcome addition.

Quirkle is a FANTASTIC game that my older kids (ages 10 and 7) love. And my husband and I do to! So many kids games can be painful for the parent to play but not this one! It's challenging, strategic and is making a lot of memories for our kids!

Fun game!

I thought this game was much more fun than the original version. I really like that you can change what you have in your hand for each turn. It makes it just a little bit more interesting!

great game, easy for traveling, but the wood could chip easily since they aren't the thick durable kind like the ones made by Blue Orange game. you're paying more for the idea and fun than the quality of products...i guess that's because it's made in China vs US or Europe or Japan....

This game is really a lot of fun to play. We we able to play it with grown ups and kids together and it was just as fun and challenging to everyone. The blocks are wood and have a really nice weight to them when rolling. I especially like the cloth bag that comes with the set. It makes clean up quick.

Qwirkle Cubes - fun for the whole family!

Great game! Wooden cubes are great quality. Nice colors - but I needed to play in bright light in order to discern the difference between the red and the orange. Good for group of various ages - easy enough for younger kids to understand and play, yet adults will enjoy too because of the strategy angle.

Outstanding game

This game exceeded my expectations based on what I had read about this game on other websites. It is made with quality and is fun for all ages. The more you play the more you realize just how strategic this game really can be. My family and I enjoy the feel of the cubes as well as the pace of the game, it takes from 30-60 minutes to play depending on how long someone thinks about their next move. You can play if over and over and not get bored!

after initial play and understanding rules, very interesting and quite challenging, when trying to prevent other players to score larger point totals.
