Fun and Challenging!!!
Posted 12/18/2009 by Sue Schmidt

Rating:

Setting: Home

I bought this for a Christmas present for my 10 yr old nephew but I came home one day to my 13 yr old son playing with it. (He told me not to worry - he would be able to put it back in the box and no one would ever know it had been played with!) Anyway my son, my husband and I spent all evening playing with it. It is one of those things you just don't want to put down until you master it! The next day I ordered 2 more - one for my son (and husband) and one for my 15 yr old nephew.

A rating of Perplexus
Posted 1/26/2010 by Bob Mackay

Rating:

I like your maze very much, but it arrived without a ball inside, which suggests that factory QA is not up to scratch. I called Fat Brain Toys, who forwarded me to the manufacturer to get a replacement. The manufacturer did not return phone calls. I was able to buy a steel ball of the correct size and drill a hole in the cover of the puzzle to get it inside. I have yet to solve it completely, but that is as it should be! The central bucket does not swing very well, which will probably be a problem for the last move, when I get to it. The swing arm looks floppy, but worked OK. I find the numbers defining the route to be too faint to read reliably without very strong light.
 |
 |
This gentleman is quite possibly the most resourceful customer we've known. No need to track down a steel sphere and drill a hole in your Perplexus ball- unless of course you want to do that! Call us if you need a shorter route to full satisfaction. We'll make sure you receive the customer care you deserve. Please visit the Returns & Exchanges center for details.

Perplexus is a great toy
Posted 10/18/2010 by Rebecca Hunt

Rating:

Setting: Home

Perplexus rewards patience and dexterity. The ball can roll too quickly and fall off the track if you don't handle the maze in such a way to control the speed and direction of the roll, and some of the steps needed to take the ball to the next step of the maze are not always obvious. There are a sequence of numbers 1-99 that allow the user to see just how far along in the maze s/he has gotten, but those numbers aren't very easy to see and can be easily overlooked. A very good feature is the three different starting places, which allow one to skip large areas already solved so that one does not always have to start at the very beginning each time the ball falls off the track. So far my 8yo son and I have been using the 2nd starting spot, and have learned that each section is harder than the last. We've had it for less than a week, so hopefully we won't be stuck there for much longer!

Product review of Perplexus

Rating:

This puzzle is able to keep a six year olds attention and intrigue adults as well. The kindergarten children in my daycare think this product is "COOL"! It keeps their attention for 1/2 an hour or so at a time. One 6 year old, with difficulty focusing, loves this toy. I believe it will help children increase their attention span and their eye-hand-coordination. I'm very pleased about this purchase.

Perplexus maze

Rating:

Setting: Homeschool

My 10 & 11 year old boy and girl couldn't put it down when we first got it and still enjoy the challenge of it. Well worth the money. I'm planning on ordering another for a birthday gift for another family. So nice to see them interested in something that's not electronic. Unfortunately, my son was tossing it around like a ball, dropped it and a piece broke off. I'm wondering if it can be openend, repaired and closed back up.

Perplexingly AMAZING!
Posted 8/24/2010 by Andrea

Rating:

Setting: Home

For our son's 7th birthday we surprised him and did a "makeover" on a room in our house so that he would have his own Office. We redecorated the room top to bottom, and gifts included a laptop, printer, phone, and camera - all of which he really wanted (and trust me, ALL were rehabbed or ebay!). We threw in a Perplexus because it looked so interesting and he's really into marble tracks and mazes. He woke up at 5 am to open his presents and was impressed with the office stuff but was OBSESSED with the Perplexus! We ALL played with it all morning, and have grabbed it at times throughout every day since then. It is just such a Great toy! Very challenging but not overwhelming. You want to keep trying it and it's addictive. It's also a great teacher of Patience, Thinking Ahead, and Moderate Movement. We are really impressed (as are all of the friends who passed it around at the birthday party)!

Perplexus

Perplexus is a HIT! I purchase games for piano students to play while they are waiting to take their lesson. I look for games that will encourage focus and concentration and are new and different. Perplexus meets all those expectations and more. It has been particularly enjoyed by the middle school and high school bunch. Tonight my 12-year-old grandduaghter begged to take it home for the night. I had to make her promise to return it in the morning and to treat it with tender loving care--andn she will. She said I really should have purshased two!

Review for Perplexus
Posted 3/7/2010

Rating:

I gave Perplexus to my nephew as a gift and it seemed to perplex both a 9 year old boy and a 36 year old man at the same time. It's similar to a video game that can entertain a boy for hours quietly and independently while he tries to get to the next step or level - only he's not sitting in front of a screen. I would say that he played Perplexus for a good 3 hours straight and had a hard time putting it down.

Review for Perplexus
Posted 8/1/2010 by Morteza Razavi

Rating:

The game is a great idea, which is why I thought I would purchase it. I think that the tracks are not joining up easily enough and because of that the ball jumps off too quickly and you lose your position again. Perhaps if it was remodeled to make it a little bit more fluid as the ball moves around, then kids could really get the hang of it.
 |
 |
Perplexus is designed to exercise the intellect as well as coordination and perceptual skills. The tracks are designed with small gaps to invite greater challenge.

I gave this to my 6 yr. old grandson for Christmas. After I showed him how to play with it he played with it for quite awhile. Then he would give it to me to try and back and forth it went. He seemed to enjoy playing with it. The other adults present enjoyed trying to complete one maze. It isn't easy but I don't think it is too hard to complete but will take time to master. My engineer son was impressed with it for a 6 yr. old because of it being "three dimensional".

This is a great toy! The whole family has played with it. It is colorful and durable and promotes great hand-eye coordination. It also requires patience and concentration. The only problem is that there is not a map/paper copy of the trail and no one who has played it can find #31. I know there are videos about it on You Tube so I will research it from that aspect.

My children ARGUE about who's turn it is to try this toy. Unfortunately, my husband is now in the mix saying it's HIS turn. A great toy from 8 to 40 years+. I like how my normally clumsy son is able to carefully turn the ball--I believe it is helping him have better eye/hand coordination. My daughter and he have a contest to see who can go the farthest on the maze. This is a whole lot of fun which passed 4 hours of a road trip quickly.

Great Toy!
Posted 12/15/2010 by Grace Lukens

Rating:

I bought this toy for my grandchildren, ages 11, 8, and 4, as an add on gift to the other toys I got for them as individuals. They loved it! The eleven year old girl was getting through level two in a little while, and the 8 year girl kept at it even though she was challenged by level one. The four year old couldn't get very far with it, but was so intriqued with it that he told me when he grows up and works for Fat Brain Toys he is going to make Perplexus toys, too! The kids all wanted their dad to try it, and I loved it so much I told them I was going to buy another one for Grandpa and me. It would be fun to have around the house. The engineering in this thing is so fascinating that I went to their website to find out who made it!

My rating of Perplexus
Posted 2/15/2010 by Leslie Anderson Freck

Rating:

This is one of those toys that kids (our are aged 7 & 9) enjoy, but parents are always waiting for their turn, as well. We had been looking for an old-fashioned, wooden labyrinth game, but have been dismayed at the poor quality of those we found lately. Perplexus requires similar eye-hand coordination and spatial thinking, but in a slightly different format. You turn the entire ball to make the marble follow the path, and if it falls off, it goes to the bottom of the ball and you must start over. One bonus is that you can't lose the marble.
The only complaint we have is that the numbers that direct you in the right directions are simply embossed on the plastic tracks and difficult to see and the embossed name on the clear plastic ball can occlude your vision at times as well.
Overall, a great toy....used during the day and well after the kids go to bed.

This toy is addictive! The mazes are amazing! My 3 year old grandson is quite good at it, much better than his grandma. The toy is great for all ages, and the entire family can't put it down! It is challenging, frustrating and exciting all at once. You want to keep going until you get the metal ball through the many mazes.
The only drawback is that it is sometimes hard to see the ball and hard to tell what direction you need to be going in. You can end up repeating what you've already done. There are some points where the ball falls very quickly and you have to start over. But all in all it is a great toy.

Rating:

This is such a beautifully designed game. We actually have it sitting out on a pedestal, it's visually quite beautiful, and that way it's right there to enjoy and grab and play for a few (or a lot!) of minutes. Also, because it is self-contained, and sealed, there are no parts to lose or look for. It's so tricky, it is going to provide years of entertainment.
Well done!

I don't think this toy should be in the category for children with autism.
I did not return it because he has two other brothers who might play with it.

Children with Autism like all of us -vary in their abilities and strengths. We've heard of a few children with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome that enjoy Perplexus. As a parent or educator who knows the individual child well, you are the best judge of its appropriateness for building logic and fine motor skills.

Rating:

I was really excited for my 9 year old son to get this toy. The concept is great and the product is well built. The downside is there seems to be only one way get the ball in the cup! So...now that he knows how to do it well... he doesn't play with it much. I wish there was more than one way to solve the puzzle.
 |
 |
He's got keen eyes and steady hands. Please note, there are three levels to Perplexus fun. If you're the type to master Perplexus every time you try, you've got a strong skill set for learning to pilot a plane or perform surgery. If you're really, really rotten at Perplexus but love the hand-eye challenge, maybe watch repair...

This game is amazing! I bought it and my boys have not put it down yet. They completed the 3 levels for the maze by the second day. After that, they've made their own games, mazes, and challenges for themselves and each other. I love this toy. I thought it was a bit pricey just for a hand-held game, but now I know, it is worth every penny. Hours of quiet entertainment.

Great toy, one suggestion:
On both sides of the clear plastic globe there is a logo molded into the plastic. This distorts the view the player has to view the ball inside. The entire plastic globe should be smooth and clear.

Best toy ever!

This toy was designed by an art instructor at SRJC. He has done similar art projects that are on a larger scale. I first saw one of the interactive art sculptures and was intrigued. I saw the perplexus on sale at my schools bookstore, and bought it right away as a girt for my brother, 37. I got it home and couldn't resist opening it myself. I've been playing with it ever since. I felt bad about opening my brothers gift so I went online to buy him a new one. *
Since giving the Perplexus to him we have all enjoyed playing it . From my nephew who is 4 years old to my uncle who is in his 70's everyone has been facinated with it. I highly reccomend it for everyone.

Plasmart Perplexus Maze Game
Posted 2/19/2010 by Lambreca

Rating:

After playing with it for several hours over the past days, I can already conclude that the Perplexus is one of the coolest toys/puzzles I ever put my hands on. It starts out easy, making it interesting for children (I guess from ages 8 onwards), but the difficulty gradually increases to make it challenging for adults as well.
It is very hard to put the Perplexus down !
The Perplexus has 3 starting positions. The first one is the beginning of the track, but 2 and 3 allow you to skip over 1/3rd or 2/3rd of the obstacle course in order to continue without redoing the easy part over and over again.

Tricky but FUN!

This is the second Perplexus ball of this type we've owned. The first one got broken (probably in a fit of frustration!). Just as fun as the first time around, though. It was a gift and was opened at a party. The adults immediately go in on the action and I don't think the kids actually got a chance until everyone went home!

The grandparents and parents won't put it down long enough for the child to play with it!! Great toy - addictive. Pretty sure it will last long enough for the child it was intended for to grow into it. I bought the original version for the 4 year old and the Rookie for the 3 year old. They're pretty smart but not quite ready for these challenging toys...YET! But they are very intrigued by the adults obsession with them!

I gave this to my 17-year-old son who enjoyed it very much, but once he completed the challenge (which he was able to do fairly quickly), he has not played with it. I expect that it will be brought out again when he has friends over. I think this is a good puzzle for his age group, but, in retrospect, would purchase the more difficult version. Because of his age, I did not expect him to play with this frequently. I purchased it for a fun, short term challenge that would divert him temporarily from video games, and it served this purpose well.

So fun! In an age where my nephew only loves Legos or video games, we've found a toy that he will play with! Not many toys can keep a 10 year old's attention for long, but this one does. We even argued over who had the next turn. The only one who found it too hard was the 4 year old. Great stuff!

When you first pick it up, it mocks you. At first a single steel ball floats free but soon you are trapped in the maze that is your mind. You want to put it down but you can't. It forces you to start yet again until you decide to think ahead. Even then you get cocky and fall victim again. It mocks you yet again by allowing you to start further along yet those completed steps are no easier now. Finally you are able to speed past obstacles, only to be thrown free when the ball passes beyond your comprehension. In the end, is it your victory?

All the people liked the toy. Some played it for a while then put it down and said they'd had enough couldn't make it work. Others played and played trying to conquer the challenge.
The bottom line; this is one great, fun toy that creates a lot of conversation and enjoyment. After the week in my office I took it home where it continues to bring joy to my husband and everyone who visits.

This was a gift for my 7 year old son for Christmas. He REALLY enjoys it. He loves problem solving challenges and this really fits that category. He hasn't been able to complete the entire puzzle yet but what he really likes is that the 100 sections are divided so he can start in one of three sections. He has mastered steps 1-27 so he can start at 28 to perfect that section rather than having to do the whole first part everytime. He took it to school for show and tell and ALL of the kids wanted to try it. All of the other adults spent time playing with it over the holidays too! My 5 year old did find it to be a little frustrating, though!

I ordered Perplexus as gifts for 2 boys, ages 8 & 10. My son, the 8-year-old really likes it; I haven't heard much from the 10-year-old (lives in a different state). It is interesting enough for my son & his friends to pick up & try out. Also seems like they have enough success to keep playing with it, but it's not easy to get all the way through - although my son has solved it a couple of times already.

Fun Challenging Toy

Received as Christmas Gift - it entertained everyone Christmas Day - as soon as someone would put it down, someone else picked it up. It did seem to entertain the adults much more than my 4 year old grandson, but he also had many other new toys. I think it will be a toy that never gets old - it will always be challenging. Also, since it is completely contained within the hard plastic shell, I don't think you will ever wear it out. I was completely satisfied with my purchase!

We opened the toy to try it before giving it to our grandson. We had a hard time finding the start and we have tried the maze several times. I'm not sure if we will give it to him or send it back. We are afraid he will get too frustrated with it. He is 7, maybe it is too hard for him.

This is a fun, adicting toy that gets picked up by a lot of family members. Honestly I was going to give it for xmas but the kids were going into exam week, looked a bit frazzled, so I brought it out.
Both my grade 8 girl and grade 6 boy pick it up and play with it. Its a fun distraction sitting on the coffee table. It takes some skill to master, more than we have learned in the past few days!

The picture almost says it all. Great toy and even better than the simple 2D marble maze puzzles. I have almost completed 2 out of the 3 tracks in the maze and the game play is quite good. My only complaint is that there are a couple of spots that are difficult just for the sake of being difficult and not difficult because they are novel.
All in all a great game, especially for those who are good with spacial problems.

Perplexus has been a great puzzle. I have spent time playing with it, and took the toy when visiting family over the holidays. Everyone had to get their hands on it. Two nephews, ages 5 and 12, were kept busy trying to get the ball along its path. Even when the ball would fall off, I didn't see frustration but rather determination. My brother-in-law stayed focused on Perplexus until he was finally able to accomplish all three paths. And, we've found that success does not mean that Perplexus gets put up - rather, it is still fun to make your way down the paths again.

Perplexus is a fun toy that really appeals to both my 12 year old daughter and my 47 year old husband. I wanted something other than video games for my daughter, so I stocked up on mind games (i.e., Mastermind, Chess, etc). This was a good purchase. It is a bit difficult for my 6 year old to manipulate; however, it is an engaging toy and I'm sure that eventually she will be able to figure it out. Fun toy, all around.

Exceptionally fun toy! Everyone at the house on Christmas morning was clamoring to have a turn and once each person got it, they wouldn't want to give it up to the next player. The only recommendation that I would have with the toy is that the numbers should be stamped in color. It is VERY difficult to see the numbers for following the path, although, you can sort of see where the next path is coming anyway. It would just be a little easier if the numbers were more visible. Otherwise, VERY FUN!

I picked up the Perplexus after reading the article about the inventor of this gadget in Make magazine. After over a week of nearly constant play, I have come to the realization that this is probably the coolest thing I have bought in the last decade. I brought it to work with me, and sparked an almost instant love for it in four grown men. By its very nature the ball seems easy, and it is... at first. I still have not beaten it, though I must admit that currently I almost only play it while on breaks at work. I have also taken the time to look over your website and I am fascinated by several other products you carry and may be buying other things as time goes on. Five stars, and two thumbs up!

This was one of many gifts to a puzzle-loving family this Christmas and it hasn't had any rest since! My 45 year-old husband and my 9 year-old son have been giving it quite a work-out and even our four year-old son is getting the hang of it.
This is a colorful, attractive, intriguing toy that is easy enough to understand and get a start at that it will entrap nearly anyone who picks it up. Yet, it is challenging enough for the fellows that delight in announcing every additional "number" that they succeed. Two days after its appearance in the house and no one has finished it yet! This is quite an achievement.
I think that there should be more on the packaging about the inventor and his beautiful wooden perplexus sculpture, but that's just me.

Saw this in a specialty store here in town and decided to go ahead and buy it. Very unique, I have never encountered anything quite like it. It will try your patience....considering there are 100 barriers I have no idea how anyone could make it to the end without the ball falling off the path but my hat off to anyone that can. As some reviews I read mentioned, the numbers that label each barrier are very hard to see unless you are in the right light, however since the path the ball takes makes sense this likely is not much of an issue except for the first few tries. Definitely recommended for those that have the patience and determination, give it a try!
