Quality, But Needed More Depth
Posted 4/1/2007 by Andrea Pixton

Rating:

I used this set for my 8th grade son for homeschooling. It was to review the physics he had already learned. The product material was overall excellent quality. We were disappointed that it was not challenging to him. I strongly suggest some written instructions. The clear pictures helped, but written instructions would have taken away frustrations. The science projects were helpful to go over for reviewing physics, but I would have preferred some questions and further suggested research on the matter. I feel younger grades would benefit more from this.

Good Product

Product has everything I was looking for; Gears, wheels, pulleys and the like. The pieces fit together well and small fingers have no problems.

Physics Discovery

Thames & Kosmos products are of the very highest quality. I personally own the Physics Workshop, Solar Physics Workshop, Fuel Cell Car & Experimenter Kit and Physics Discovery. The Physics Discovery kit is a lower priced kit but seems to have more beams and physical items. The manual was designed by educators for educating. Each experiment is carefully thought out. I particuarly like the quality of these kits. If I were to guess I would think that they might be made by Lego Corp for Thames and Kosmos because of the integrated quality. The tolerance of the beams is similar to Legos. Also the paper cutouts are of the highest quality cardboard with color press variety of colors. This kit comes with a full color 33 page booklet with instructions for 17 experiments. It is a perfect lower cost gift for a boy or girl to spur them on with interest in Physics and Engineering. I am also going to get their Power House kit. The Thames & Kosmos people get it right and know education. Every boy or girl would learn with this one.

Nice set

I bought this for my son's 6th birthday. He really has enjoyed it and can make many of the models all on his own (without being able to read). He looks at the pictures in the booklet and figures it out. The plastic pieces are pretty good quality, the rubber band did break though (and we were not rough with it). Also, I wish that the paper pieces (like the one that covers the car model) were a bit thicker or laminated to make them last longer. Overall, it is a good set.
