The center component does not slide freely. It contains no instructions. If you were an engineer during the Apollo era, you may know how to use a slide rule. For me, I was very disappointed.

Before the slide rules were a little tight, but I still liked them. I bought two of them. This time, they must have taken care not to make them too tight, even a little loose, but if you squeeze it in the middle it is fine, in fact, perfect. I have some very very expensive rules that are much more elaborate, but, just as there are many types of scientific calculators on the market, there are many types of slide rules. This does just about everything you would want as a math major. My son uses one instead of the calculator at Virginia Tech as a Computer Science major taking a LOT of math. The students gather around, and are amazed to watch a slide rule work, the simple analog computer that put us on the moon. A wonderful invention. Everybody in the country would be better at math if they had to learn with slide rules!

Interesting Math Artifact

I bought this as a gift for my husband who loves math and old technology. (If anyone still has a laserdisc, you can come play it at our house!) He was interested in seeing how a slide rule worked and using one-- "This is what scientists used to send men to the moon- pretty amazing!"
The slide rule works well- slides easily, but not easily enough to do it accidentally & markings are pretty clear. It is new, so does not have the problems of buying a used one which may be warped or have lines & numbers faded. Fortunately, my dad (who used to use one regularly) was able to show my husband how to use it as there are no directions included. There are many websites that offer free directions if you need them.
My husband was happy with his gift.

The slide rule was one of my favorite tools when I was growing up. I enjoyed working with it. This one was exactly as I remembered when I was using the slide rule in my high school days. For someone new in using the slide rule, it would be helpful to have an elementary manual to go along with the slide rule.

This is slide rule, not really a toy. I bought two and plan on teaching my grandchildren how to use it. Does math but requires thought.
I am now refreshing my on recall of the instrument. Haven't used one in thirty years.
Great item. Actually much better instrument than I expected given the low price. Thanks.

Slide Rule

Somewhat of a let down. I was expecting an actual slide rule. It's good as a toy for show & tell, but the workmanship wasn't what I had expected. And that's mostly my fault for having such a high standard for this particular product.

I purchased this slide rule for my High School Daughter, as an Engineer myself i thought it was a great idea for this next generation to appreciate, and take advantage of the technology of today but never lose sight of the tools used to get us here. she has started to grasp the concept of it , with quite a bit of help, but still just a tool from the past, ha ha my past.

Overall it is a good quality slide rule, although the slide portion is a a little loose. It is nice to be able to buy a new slide rule. This is the only new slide rule available.

Nostalgia for my father

I purchased this item for my father, who used a slide rule in the days before scientific calculators - and calculators at all, really - caught on. He was quite pleased with the craftsmanship when he immediately pulled it out of the package. I could tell that it really brought back a lot of memories from his early years.

I wanted to learn how to use a slide rule. This one works well, and it has met my desires. I am not going to be using this everyday like a scientist in the 1950s. If I were, I might wish the sliding action were a bit tighter and smoother. Maybe it will break in a little. But its action is good. It really does work and I have still have tons to learn about what it can do and how. Also, it is a little longer than some slide rules I have seen online, so its capacity is a little greater. That's good.

Greatest Geeky Gift Ever!

My son was so excited to get this. He immediately went to the internet to figure out how to use it. He can't put it down. Actually took it to school today, because none of the other kids knew what it was. He is in the 9th grade.

The slide rule is very helpful in one of my classes, however, it would be nice if there were some simple instructions on how to use it. Some of the instructions I looked up online were quite vague.

This is not as good a rule as I used in high school back in the 70s. Mainly it simply doesn't slide as smoothly as it should. It also doesn't have a ln rule, just log base 10. But here's the thing, it's the only slide rule being made apparently. And the cost of buying an old Keufel + Esser is very high. So in the end it is a good enough slide rule that's very affordable for those old geeks like me who actually used to use them.

An inexpensive slide rule made inexpensively. It is suitable for teaching the grandkids some mathematical concepts as well as the basics of using a slipstick.

Good Quality Slide Rule, however, there were no instructions and we had to spend considerable time on the internet tracking down some detailed instructions how to use and teach others to use this. For the price that we paid the product should have come with an instruction guide book.

Basic slide rule
Posted 2/3/2011

Rating:

This slide rule is a cheap copy made in China; the material is all plastic. The slide does not move well within the rule. Friction causes plastic shavings to stick to the underside of the cursor, obscuring readings. The price of the this product is equal to or exceeds real slide rules from the pre-1970s era on eBay. You are better off buying a used slide rule. Also, there is no instruction manual like traditional slide rules, so you will need to obtain a book from your library on how to use it.

The slide rule isn't really a toy but does get "played" with. The center rule was completely stuck when I first took it out of the box. Took some strength to break it loose. It is still a very tight slide but it does slide.

The center slide on this slide rule is incredibly difficult to budge. I had to bang it against the edge of a table to move it 3 mm. I'll have to bang the other end to move it back; I certainly cannot grasp it with my fingers and slide it. As I recall from my father's slide rules -and from the name- they ARE supposed to slide. I need a quick fix!
