Great for a future scientist!

My four and a half year old wont put it down since he received it! He loves gathering his "specimens" for his slides. It's a great second microscope. He has a more elementary model he received last Christmas.

Nice start

The instructional cards are perfect for my six year old. Though she wanted to dive right into the pre-prepared slides, the cards keep her engaged and learning. The microscope isn't great quality--would be willing to pay more for the set if it was. All in all, a perfect exploratory set.

As a teacher and parent, I found this microscope to be good quality and engaging. My daughter loved being a scientist and looking at various things under the lens. The cards that go along with the microscope are colorful and have great information and ideas.

Definitely a toy

The light is too dim to really show through most things, a grain of salt is a brown, nearly opaque square. The slides they provide you with are of thick, dark material, so all you see is the edges at the lowest power and nothing at higher powers. Also, the different powers aren't lined up to focus on the same point, so when you switch to a higher power, you have to find what you were looking at again. For example, we tried both a hair and grains of salt. At 100X, both looked pretty cool, but at 300X and 600X, they were no longer in our field of vision and trying to get something lined up at that power is almost impossible, so I'd say the higher powers are pretty useless. Also, there's a lens somewhere in the assembly that looks like a bunch of dark yellow cells in a petri dish, so you constantly have to look through that when trying to use the microscope, so your view is never clear.
This is a starter microscope with many activities and price limiting capability. Keep in mind, Fat Brain Toys does carry higher quality microscopes for the child serious about science. If any purchase magnifies disappointment, look to the Returns & Exchanges Center for clear satisfaction! We assisted our customer promptly.

The 12-year-old spent one day assembling it and the 10-year-old, 8-year-old, 4-year-old, and the 2-year-old have loved playing with it as much as possible.
