As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 0 years of age.
Identified Special Needs Challenges: Autism
"This has been a great item for my nonverbal 6 year old son with autism. You can set it up to respond to sounds. My son will sit and squeak or make guttural noises and see that the device lights up while he's doing it. It pleases him and holds his attention for 5 minutes at a time. It has a power adapter but you can put batteries in the device. Makes it easier for them to walk around with and sit on their lap. My son, who prefers to stim and really doesn't play with toys, has enjoyed humming with this toy. I am hoping that soon he will make the connection between sounds are words and words will help me communicate what I want and we can move on to the next step. "
Product review of Lumin Disk 6 inch

I purchased this product for my 6-year-old son with autism. He is nonverbal and doesn't really play with toys... but loves things with lights. I had hoped that, giving him this, he would become excited and want to play it. I was initially disappointed when I took this out of the box and saw there was a power cord to plug into the device and into the wall. Then I saw that there was a chamber you could add batteries to, thus forgoing the power adaptor. So I was happy about that. I added batteries, set the device up to respond to sound, and my little guy carries it everywhere. He is nonverbal but whenever he makes a sound.... the device lights up and gives him a little show. It makes him smile. I hope that soon, it helps him realize the connection to sounds/words and he will start talking more.
