Leonardo da Vinci improved upon the already-established catapult design when he introduced his own vision the the age-old military launching device. This design uses a double leaf spring to produce a great deal of energy in order to propel stone projectiles or flammable materials over large distances. A hand crank on the side of the catapult was used to load the spring.
The scientific genius of Leonardo da Vinci is brought to life through these 10 articulated models. The inventions that inspired these snap-together replicas are taken from the pages of Da Vinci’s priceless and awe-inspiring notebooks. All models are made of plastic and require no special tools. Manuals are very educational and teach how these inventions have evolved into what they are today.

I used the Da Vinci models as an aid in my classroom to teach students about Da Vinci and other renaissance era artists. The students loved the models but having ordered and paid for the models I expected a little more.

The real educational value of this product is the manual that comes with the catapult. There is a lot of good, but brief, information about DaVinci and his inventions. There are a couple of typos, but well worth the price. The catapult itself is very easy to assemble and works surprisingly well. I would like to eventually get the entire DaVinci collection.

I bought this as a model for a Renaissance Science class I am teaching in our homeschool co-op. For an inexpensive plastic model, it looks fine, and captured the kids' interest. It also gave a visual reference for our discussion of Leonardo's design work. For these reasons - I don't regret buying it and am not returning it. As far as actual performance, it was quite disappointing. The simple catapults my mid-elementary kids built as a 10 minute class project were much more effective. They launched a small object almost 3 times as far as the purchased model. "Why the model didn't work as well" became part of the class discussion. Along with poor performance - one of the plastic parts snapped in two while I was assembling it - earning it poor marks on longevity.
Teacher, you score high marks with us! Encouraging analytical thought about "why the model didn't work well" is mind-power well spent. As a catapult part was faulty, contributing to the lack of launching success - we provided a gift certificate for our customer.
What a great new way to knock down green army men! My 9 year old son put it together with a tiny bit of help from me. It's sturdy enough to launch acorns and small stones. I like it because it shows him about torque!
