I got this toy for a bright 6 year old, even though it was rated for 8+ years; I have a 10 year old, and he was my fall-back if it proved too complicated. It's hopelessly complicated for a 10 year old. It took me, a 44-year old with a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a shed full of tools about 4 hours to put together. (The instructions are wrong in at least one spot, and I had to cut away and reshape one plastic part, and use modeling clay to fill in another spot.) The results are a robot that can only, in theory, go forward or back up in response to sounds. In practice, it reverses direction every fraction of a section, so it shudders around the floor like a Parkinson's patient with no apparent design. The transmission gears pop out at the slightest provocation, and need to be readjusted, and with typical child treatment the whole thing falls apart. Badly engineered, and hopelessly too advanced for a child. Bah. Rubbish.
