Whichever piece or pieces cannot be placed back within the village boundaries, determines the winning player. This game is a winning mix of culture, architecture, geography, history, strategy, and skill. I had previously owned the standard cathedral game and found it's combination of puzzle solving and strategy a lot of fun for both me and my kids. I was amazed at the improvement in both the quality of playing pieces and the board. The use of buildings from various nations around the world adds both a creative edge to the game as well as improving it's appearance.
