Additional Information:
The nutrient, non-toxic gel is formulated to last up to one (1) year and provide ALL the food and water the ant colony needs to live in their antfarm habitat. Usually ants will live anywhere from 2 - 6 months and in the "AntWorks" habitat they are 'safe' from disease, cold/wet, and predators.
Also, whenever ants are attacked, it is the OLDEST worker (all female) ants that exit the colony to protect it...so if you capture you own ants, you will never know exactly HOW long they will live. Maybe days, weeks or months.
Also, whenever an ant "expires", their buddies normally carry them to the TOP of the gel (where they place the 'tunnel debris')...so you can always OPEN the lid and take them out, and if you wish, later put in NEW, FRESHER ants to replace the ones that have expired.

"It is small enough that the students can handle the ant farm, and sturdy enough that we never had to worry about the lid. We chart the numbers of tunnels, the lengths, journal, learn about the jobs and how the ants work together (compare to classroom, and community jobs and the need to work together). We wrote creatively (some did storytelling that could not write and video taped it) about what is happening, what the ants are thinking watching us, what would their day be like, compared their ways of communicating without words to our ways of communicating without words. We always kept magnifying glasses handy for the kids to look and explore. Every day students from the mainstream popped in to see the changes as well. It doesn't matter what age or ability- there is so much to be learned and enjoyed from these ants. To adapt for mild/moderate visual impairments, I would put it under a document camera for the Smartboard so it can be blown up and seen in actual time."

I bought this for my Special Education classroom of high school students. So many others came to our room daily to check out the ants and see what they were up to. Was great for Science, teamwork, journalling, and creating writing. Loved it so much- we just bought a second one!

This was a good gift for my 6 year old son. He was very excited. We did not order ants though, he went out and caught some his self.. I think that they might do more work if we had ordered ants because I guess they would come with a queen ant.. they seem sort of confused with out a queen. Other than that it's awesome because you don't have to worry about the ants starving to death at the hands of a 6 year old as they can eat the material in the tank. It's very entertaining to watch them..for myself as well as my son.
