The nutrient, non-toxic gel is formulated to last up to one (1) year and provide ALL the food and water the ant colony needs to live in their antfarm habitat. Usually ants will live anywhere from 2 - 6 months and in the "AntWorks" habitat they are 'safe' from disease, cold/wet, and predators.
Also, whenever ants are attacked, it is the OLDEST worker (all female) ants that exit the colony to protect it...so if you capture you own ants, you will never know exactly HOW long they will live. Maybe days, weeks or months.
Also, whenever an ant "expires", their buddies normally carry them to the TOP of the gel (where they place the 'tunnel debris')...so you can always OPEN the lid and take them out, and if you wish, later put in NEW, FRESHER ants to replace the ones that have expired.

Excellent product!! My son is 4 years old and obsessed with bugs...this was by far his favorite present!! It is so cool to be able to watch the ants tunnel through and see how they live. The backlight is great for my son's room, functioning as a nightlight. The ants are not included, so be sure to buy them too (www.antsalive.com)

My son had been bugging me for an ant farm from the garden center - I managed to resist as the idea didn't appeal to me. When I saw this setup I was rather intrigued - and not disappointed when it arrived! It is well-made, easy to understand, and I have a feeling that the continuedopportunities for observation will only stimulate further interest. We went on our own ant quest, and this in itself opened numerous windows of learning. Only two days in so far, but our ants seem as busy as..... ants!

I'm not sure who loves it most!!!! (Dad, son, mom?)
You can add so much with this simple toy. My son is only 3, but he loves bugs!!! This has shown him how ants live and move in a safe way. When he gets older we can study about SO much more. Great, FUN, tool for homeschooling!!!! (or any class out there!!!!)

We have a family of four children. Every single one of them from the youngest to the oldest was intrigued and fascinated by the antworks habitat. (as were we!!!) Every guest that entered our home was equally as intrigued. It spurred on a great discussion regarding habitat, space, etc. What a great gift for someone as well!
