As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 8 years of age.

We bought these "Action"-themed cubes (blue box) to complement the traditional Story cubes (orange box). Both are fantastic.
Each set comes with 9 dice. (You can use one set alone or mix-n-match sets, but you should only choose 9 total dice.) Think of the Story cubes as representing nouns (people, places, things) and as the Action cubes as representing verbs (actions). To play, you roll the 9 dice and see which images land face-up. You then tell a story using the images on the dice. The manufacturer recommends splitting the 9 dice into 3 groups of 3 to create a beginning/middle/end for your story. This is fine for older players. For my younger kids, there are easy modifications: My 3-year-old daughter only rolls 4-5 dice to create her story. My 5-year-old son rolls all 9 but tells the story however he wants, in a less-structured way.
In today's modern world, with its disproportionate emphasis on electronic devices and media, it's really great to go "minimal" with this simple but highly enjoyable game. We've begun playing with this as an alternative to reading books prior to bedtime. We play for about 30 minutes each time. The kids love it and ask to play often. It's a great way to spend some quality time together.
