èVivo! is a crystal-clear sphere made of PET, an ecological plastic, containing a biologically balanced environment! Small stock shrimp live and interact with micro algae creating a symbiotic relationship. It's undeniably cool to view.
The small spores of micro algae generate oxygen and food for the shrimp inhabitants through the process of photosynthesis. The shrimp in turn use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide by eating the micro algae. The micro algae reuse the carbon dioxide, converting it into food and air. The aerobic bacteria inside the ecosystem also clean the shrimps’ waste products.

The system is almost completely independent: the only external factors are light (from the sun or an electrical source) and air (once a month).

The only reason I put "rarely plays with it" is because its not really a TOY. The kids love the idea of a living creature inside the dome and will discuss and watch it. It is a great learning experience for them and allows some time for them to ask questions and understand the idea of life being a chain of events that support one another. This would be a great gift for a teacher to have in class and we plan to bring ours to my daughters 4th grade class to show and tell.
