What Does It Take To Be An Engineer?
|
|

Building simple machines has never had such a pull on girls.
How can you get girls to build? Engage them with a story, challenge them with a problem-solving purpose, use colors, materials, and shapes that delight girls!
Created by Debbie Sterling, a hip, young Stanford engineer (who always wanted a toy like this herself) - the first book and construction toy in the GoldieBlox series has arrived!
Enter the world of GoldieBlox and meet Goldie (a strong female character who likes to invent things), Nacho (her beloved dog), Benjamin Cranklin (a cat with attitude), Katinka (the dolphin ballerina), Phil (the sloth) and Flavio (the bear from Brazil).
In this first GoldieBlox kit, GoldieBlox and the Spinning Machine, kids help Goldie figure out how to build a belt drive to spin her crew of animal friends. Following along with the story, girls problem solve for the animals and send them a-whirling!
Every time the "build" icon appears, girls build along with Goldie so that the story sequence can progress. The story in itself is perfectly charming. Girls are immediately drawn into the action that they create, especially since the simple machines and contraptions that Goldie builds always have a purpose - to help her friends!
Girls are excited immediately and challenged gradually with GoldieBlox. As they solve each problem by creating a moving contraption, they gain confidence to take on the next level of engineering fun.
Open a GoldieBlox kit and look out for greatness. Those wheels will be turning!

As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.

 |
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 6 years of age.

Nurturing next generation engineers

This toy has a very good fundamental point to start with - to prepare girls for the interests in engineering and problem solving. I have a 6-year old daughter. She likes new things and is very curious about new devices, and equipments, etc. She likes lego as well as barbie dolls and other girlish stuff. This toy makes engineering a non-gender biased area so that girls will be able to learn engineering in a non-gender preference way.
Engineering is no longer top choices for students in many OECD countries. Hence, learning engineering in a non-gender biased way or encouraging more female to take up engineering is very important.

Great toy...not sure for how long.

My 5 year old daughter was so excited to receive this toy! I had been telling her about it for months and we purchased it soon after it became available. We worked through the initial challenge in less that 30 minutes. Then she asked, "Now what?" It was bed time and I told her we could explore later. She hasn't asked about it again. I'll pull it out and try to get her to explore more on her own, but after the initial thrill, she was pretty much over it. I'll update if this changes!

My grand daughter is very smart and creative and loves art so I usually get her something along those lines but I wanted to introduce her to more science/engineering so she could use her creativity in that area and hopefully find a future in it. She also has younger brothers who will enjoy it, even though it is pink. Ha

I purchased this toy for my granddaughter's 7th Birthday. She played with it for hours. She loved reading the book and following the story to build her machine.
I truly hope that there will be more to come so she can advance her little engineering abilities.
