He’s a salesman of unlikely sort. A dapper peddler who strolls about with a pile of colored caps high on top of his head. Every day, he calls out his cadence… “Caps for sale! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!” One day, a slower business day, he leans against a tree for a short nap- only to awake to monkeys high in the tree above him, all wearing his caps!
“You monkeys you, give me back my caps!!!!" (Little voices shout, fingers point and feet stomp - just like the peddler in the book.)
Then comes the monkeys response, (accompanied by more finger shaking and stomping right back-) "Tsz, tsz, tsz".
Children relate to the peddler’s nap, his anger at the monkeys for taking his caps, and happiness at getting his caps back. Some children relate more to the mischievous monkeys. Repetitive rhythm and easy-to-learn text gives children the freedom to be very expressive.
