Tuck a nylon parachute into two indestructible ball halves, close the ball up, give it a few hearty swings by the attached tail and loft it sky high. At the height of the toss (and, believe us, we're talking pretty high), the ball opens up and out pops the 32"-diameter parachute. The whole thing floats down to the ground just like Apollo 13. My 8 year old was a bit discouraged- you really need a strong arm and lots of space to get it high enough for the chute to open before it hits the ground. Once he found the space and got the hang of it, it was tons of fun

I bought this for my 10 year old, and partly because I had a similar toy when I was a kid - although nowhere near as well built. The Klutz Slingchute is sturdy and should last a while, although you probably should not use it over a hard surface like concrete.
The idea is straightforward
1. Pack the parachute into the two halves of the ball (it's a tight fit, and small hands may need some help with this)
2. Optionally, lock the ball halves together loosely with an attached plastic latch
3. Whirl the ball around on its tether and sling it into the air. This takes some coordination AND strength to get the ball up to a decent height - even some adults might have to work hard at this, butchildren of 6 and over can do it with a little practice.
4. Run around excitedly trying to catch the Slingchute as it slowly floats back down. This is the part that little or big kids can do easily!
The parachute is nicely constructed of rip-stop nylon, and has a woven mesh attachment to the ball, which is impossible to tangle - hooray and it's about time someone came up with this!
Concerns:
1. I was worried that the ball would not open and the parachute would not deply, so you'd end up with a hard plastic ball coming down (it would hurt but not injure your noggin if you were under it). So far this has happened only once, hence the need for a soft surface underfoot.
2. If it is windy or there are trees close by you may lose your Slingchute easily.
3. Although I could have played with this for hours by myself as a kid, the current generation would lose interest after about 15 minutes, especially if the child was on their own. This would be a better park toy for a group of kids, but you'd have to bring other toys with you as well.
Overall the Slingchute is worth it as a toy, and can even be used for a bit of education as well. Try asking your child about gravity and air resistance (and older kids about acceleration and terminal velocity). In fact, although not its recommended use, we're going to try to launch the Slingchute atop a water rocket to give it a real boost in altitude.
