I bought this game in a hope that it would be played at our church coffee house. So far it hasn't left my own house because me wife and I cannot put it down. My hope was that it would add a new perspective on an old favorite and it truly has.
Many of the dynamics of are the same. You are still trying to earn victory points though discovery, settlement, conflict, and trade. You start with the normal two settlements, but only one road.
What makes the game different is that you start with one card of each resource that is numbered 1-6. Since you only roll one number die, you are guaranteed to get a trade good with every roll, no more waiting for turns without any return. On top of that, with only one die, you no longer have to fight the odds of two dice.
The next difference falls in the second die. It contains six sides: two events, one tournament, one year of plenty, one commerce point, and one brigand. This really changes your strategy, a lot like the barbarians in the Cities and Knights expansion on the classic game. You have to decide which cards to buy to protect yourself against this powerful little die.
The last major difference are the five stacks of expansion cards and event cards. The expansion cards are similar to the progress cards of the Cities and Knights expansion of the classic game. Though these cards you gain advantages over your opponent, especially concerning the extra event die. With them you can gain victory and commerce points, build knights, and increase production and trade. The event card on the other hand, are affected by the expansion cards, but more often than not provide a positive outcome for the players. Don't get caught off guard because there are a few really nasty cards located throughout the deck.
Overall, this game is one that I would highly suggest. It is a little more complex than the classic Settlers of Catan game, but no more difficult than Cities and Knights. The greatest aspect of this game is that it is a two player game. Many of the greatest games require three or more player to unlock their full potential. I still prefer Settlers of Catan with the Cities and Knights expansion, but I expect to get many hours of playtime from this game...especially if Fat Brain Toys picks up the expansion.

A very fun game for two players. It's quick to learn because of its similarity to the Settlers tile game, but also different enough to make it uniquely enjoyable.
