The Hole-On Ex is a make-and-shoot 35mm pinhole camera kit. This well-designed kit comes complete with all the camera parts printed on heavy, durable cardstock and die-cut and scored for easy assembly. A metal pinhole aperture is included. Step-by-step instructions mean the camera can be ready for shooting in less than two hours using standard color or black & white 35mm film (not included). Assembly requires only glue, a ruler, and pencil. When completed the Hole-On Ex is about the size of a point and shoot camera. 2.75" x 4" x 2.75" Recommended for ages 12 and up, younger with adult help.
Pinhole cameras have no optical lens - a pinhole lets light in when the shutter is opened to expose the film. The user is required to experiment with exposure times relative to available light (Hole-On Ex provides instructions). Given a pinhole camera's infinite depth of field, the resulting photos are instantly artful with a softer, less crisp appearance than regular photographs. But that's half the fun! The Hole-On Ex camera is a great way to inspire learning about the fundamentals of light, optics, and photography.

Each student received one and had great fun putting the cameras together as well as getting a better understanding of how a camera works and the function of a pin hole camera.

Hole-On Ex Could Be Better

Rating:

The Hole-On Ex Camera is a well produced item, but is lacking in design, and in R & D. It is obvious that this camera was patterned after the Dirkon Camera created back in the 70s but has been adapted with some improvements made. Unfortunately, it still lacks in the way the original did: The film advance does not take into consideration film tension, which makes the film unspool inside the camera; There is no rewind, and the instructions say to take the camera to a lab to be opened. A lot of time is spent building non-working features to make it look like an SLR camera. What I like about the camera is the excellent quality of the printing and use of black-backed cardstock, ease of punching out the parts, and the simple (though perhaps too simple) visual instruction sheet. It is not a simple camera to put together and purchasers should expect it to take about 3 hours to build.
