Pathfinders' innovative wooden science kits build working replicas of three of the most infamous and powerful, medieval siege engines, the Siege Tower, the Catapult and the Trebuchet. Weapons that once smashed castle and fortress walls changing the course of many a kingdom! Building the kits allow children and adults to explore the link between design, materials and technology. A wonderful lesson in how basic mechanical principles turned simple materials into very useful and effective tools.
Pathfinders' kits are designed by Derek Wulff, a science educator in British Columbia. The kits are based on historic designs: the Trebuchet is based on the Warwolf from the 13th century. The kit uses only wood, rope and leather. Pieces are joined by wooden dowels, not screws or nails. No elastic, rubber, motor or batteries are used to create the movement of these device's swing arms. All pieces are pre-cut and drilled requiring only wood or white glue to assemble. The instructions are detailed and complete with educational notes about the siege engine.
When completed, the mighty Trebuchet is 18 inches long x 7 inches wide x 24 inches tall. It is capable of hurling a ball of soft modeling clay over 20 feet! (Modeling clay is included in the kits.) This kit is suitable for children 10 and older taking an hour or two to complete. Safety instructions are included and children are recommended to use under adult supervision. While these scale models will only be smashing down imaginary castle walls, they are loads of fun to build and use.
As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 10 years of age.
Product review of Trebuchet Kit

This is a nice toy that my 14 year old enjoyed building by himself. He is in the process of experimenting with different types and weights of objects he can catapult, and how far he can catapult them. It is a good design, but lightly built. We look forward to launching things off our dock into the water this summer.
Review for Trebuchet Kit

Built this kit under the guidance of my five year old boy, who chose it. The kit was easy to assemble; the hardest part was making the individual pegs out of the provided dowel sticks. My son loves the model. It is helping me to teach him attention to detail. We plan on staining it to give it an authentic look, and will use spray spar urethane to seal and strengthen the thin pieces of soft wood.
