History of the Slinky
The year 1943, smack dab in the middle of World War II, Richard James was developing a spring system to keep fluctuating shipboard instruments sturdy while at sea. Amused when dropping a spring to the ground that it began to walk...Richard brought the spring home to his wife, Betty. Betty had a vision for the toy, found a name in the dictionary, "slinky" meaning stealthy, sleek, and sinuous. History was made as Slinky debuted at Gimbel's Department Store in Philadelphia in 1945. Initially, there was skepticism about whether Slinky would sell, but all 400 Slinkys for sale were purchased in 90 minutes. Since then, over three hundred million Slinkys have been sold worldwide. Remarkably, the Slinky is still made in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania with the original equipment Richard James created.
Little known Slinky Fame
In 1999, Slinky became one of the very first toys to be officially honored with a picture on an official United States Postage Stamp.
As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 5 years of age.

I am using this for an unusual application ! It will be an antenna for my Kenwood R-2000 communications receiver. Because of age and physical limitations I can not climb on the roof or put antenna's up in trees, like I did years ago. An amateur radio operator, a friend of mine, suggested I build an indoor antenna using a Slinky.
Slinkys for everyone!!!

Got it to calm myself. My hands and fingers don't do anything I ask of them anymore...so really get frustrated as heck!
At least I can still hold and operate a slinky!
