This was our second try to get something that would shine stars on our son's ceiling. He wanted something that would show the constellations and was more scientific/mature than the stuffed animal-type toys that shine stars. From my research and experience, it seems difficult to get a good-quality planetarium-type toy without spending over $100. The positives of this particular toy are 1) low cost, 2) it shines the stars as white lights (others lit up the ceiling white and then showed the stars black), 3) the stars are in the correct position to be able to find/identify the constellations, 4) there is a sheet to show how the stars connect to visualize the constellations. The negatives are 1) many of the stars are shown so low that they end up projecting on the walls instead of the ceiling (I'm assuming this is so it can be accurate for stars low in the sky, but it makes it hard to see/identify the stars) and 2) the stars show as fairly large white circles, not pinpoint sparkly lights like you would see in the night sky. This last negative seems to be hard to avoid unless you possibly buy a much more expensive planetarium. Unless the toys are held up close to the ceiling, what is being projected is blurry. Regarding the planets, my son enjoyed putting it together. Quality is not maybe the best since most of it seems to be thin plastic, but if it is handled carefully, there shouldn't be any problems. Overall, my son did decide to keep this toy. (He returned the first one we tried.) He enjoys having the stars/lights shine on his ceiling as he falls asleep at night. Since there is no automatic shutoff, we have to make sure we go in later and turn it off.
