The FunFlyStick should be used indoors only, and although it is labeled for ages 5+, for maximum enjoyment we recommend it for children aged 8 years and above.
HOW IT WORKS: FunFlyStick is a portable, encapsulated Van de Graaff generator that begins separating electrons and protons at a press of a button. A positive static charge gets accumulated on the cardboard control tube. The special precut shapes (flying toys or flyers) are able to receive the static charge off the wand on a contact. Receiving the charge makes the flyers expand since the parts of the shape repel each other. The flyer also repels from the wand, so by moving the wand below the flyer, you can keep it floating in the air. Touching the floating flyer with a hand causes instant static discharge and the flyer collapses into a pile of tinsel. Touching it again with the wand will bring the flyer “into life” as if by magic.

Basics are great, in that this toy works and the effect is amazing: mylar shapes fly through the air in response to the static electricity generated by the wand. Toy seems well made, and effect is strong. Disappointments are two: the shapes are very very VERY flimsy and while they do not break they almost immediately get tangled and so some visual charm is lost. They don't break, but they do tangle. Second, nowhere does the manual discuss the actual science of what is going on. The whole thing is portrayed as "magic" levitation, which might be fine for the 3-year-olds, but older kids will want to know what is going on!

The FunFlyStick is a neat item, but is a little harder to use than the description leads you to believe. It can be learned with a little practice, but is not an "open and play" product. The quality, however seems to be very good. You receive extra flying items, which definitely increases the value.
