As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 3 years of age.

"I saw a bin of moon sand used at my autistic son's school used as a behavior reinforcer....the student did her work and then was allowed to run her hands through the sand as a reward. I've found that in my sensory storytime at the library, it depends on the child's sensory issues. For some, the sand may be too smooth. For others it's just right. It holds together well for scooping and building things but a lot of the kids just interact with it sort of randomly..."experiencing" it rather than "using" it for something.
The colors are great but we mix them up too--that doesn't seem to matter to any of the kids. Sometimes fun things are "de-selected" depending on the color, but most kids play with the moon sand. We also have a bin of foam (like Floam) that we use at different times. Not quite as good (a little too sticky at times) but still appealing..."

"Moon Sand is a versatile toy. It can be used on its own or with simple props, such as pails, cups, and shovels, etc. Kids of all abilities can enjoy playing with it. I am also able to use it to teach abstract concepts, such as full/empty and in/out. I can encourage pretend play by building different types of buildings or animals with it. "
I bought two boxes and am only using a portion of one box as I know I will lose some in the process of playing. My daughter LOVES the sand and even knows where I hide it. She's still new to talking but has made sure SAND is one of her main words.
The color is great and it doesn't transfer to hands or clothes. The sand is much neater than regular "sandbox" sand that sticks to everything and can be a real clean-up problem. It can be molded for creative play. The only negative is that even a 5 lb. bag doesn't provide enough sand to do as much as a child might want to do. My 5 year old grandson just received this and has only had time to play with it once, but it seemed to be a success.
First off, I can't stand sand. I hate sandboxes. It gets everywhere. It's like a big litterbox. But my son loves playing in the sand. So I decided to try this out for a couple of reasons. One, I like the fact that it feels like wet sand. Wet sand doesn't bother me (not as much anyway), and I thought this might be a good compromise. Second, I wanted to find a toy my son would like and maybe spark some creativity and imagination. Also one that doesn't make noise. Well, he loves it! He wants to play in it a lot. I actually like playing in it too. I will say though that it does make a mess only because he gets it all over the place but it seems easier to clean up than regular sand. Maybe because it clumps together. We just play with it outside and sweep up messy spots. My son is 3 and says he likes it "big much" :0)
