My 10-year old daughter really enjoyed her last Learning Calendar, so much that she asked for another one! The only drawback is: her last calendar ended on Dec. 2008 and this new calendar started on Sept. 2008. There is an overlap of 4 months that we don't use. I think it would be better to keep it a Jan. - Jan. calendar. Maybe include a coupon in the back of the calendar to entice people to reorder the next year's.

I ordered this item for my daughter so that she would have interesting facts to take to school with her and share with the class. The response was overwhelming. She now periodically shared tidbits on the morning announcements for the entire school. I am thinking of getting another to actually give to the teacher for the classroom for Christmas.

This calendar has graced the wall of my Enrichment (resource room for above average students) classroom for the past 3 years. I even save old calendars for the WEALTH of info contained therein!! I mean, a whole calendar dedicated to HISTORY or Famous People and NOW SCIENCE!! Students love to look up what is going on on their birthday or whatever day they look at and then become engrossed with checking on more and more and more days!! We have used items found on the calendar to spice up our "Interesting thought" on our morning broadcast, too! I usually purchase several of these calendars to give to children of friends as well. WELL WORTH IT!!

This was the first time purchasing The Learning Calendar. I like being able to use the calendar right away and enjoy reading the trivia and doing some of the activities with my child. My only suggestion would be to have trivia/history and activities on days like Easter and Christmas pertain to these religious holidays and include other faiths history and activities for their holy days of observance.

Love the content. I especially love the "future events" box to fill in the current events that will be on future calendars. It's a great way to start good conversations. I wish there was some type of caption in larger/colored text to help kids contextualize the detailed descriptions.

Spectacular Science Calendar
Posted 6/1/2010 by Melissa from PA
Rating: 4

This is a great calendar that you and your children will get plenty of use from. We purchased the Learning Science Calendar as a gift to our three children (ages 7-10) at the beginning of 2010. Each child enjoys the fun facts and creative suggestions the calendar offers. Many days my 10 year old will fill me in on some great scientific fact that he read from the calendar such as, "North Dakota is the only state to never have experienced an earthquake". The only con is that there's no room to write daily activities. This is strictly for learning.

My rating of The Learning Calendar
Posted 11/29/2009 - OTHER
Rating: 5

We gave the calender to the neighbors who are home schooling. We now can talk to their kids and ask "What did you learn today". - The calender provides a diverse range of information, activities and starting points for learning. Our favorite feature is the space left to document what happened during the week that will be in the history books of the future. The experiments are reasonable and can be done with materials already in many homes or that are easily obtained. - If we were to make an improvement it would be to link the data for a particular day to another date in history to provide a sense why this was significant or its relationship to what else was going on in the world about the same time.

Excellent Resource For Teachers & Home School Families
Posted 11/23/2007 by Frank Falcetta
Rating: 4

We purchased this product for 'enrichment' of our Calvert home school curriculum. We keep an 'Interesting Journal' with the purpose of keeping record of random facts/information that correlates and connects to the curriculum content we are studying each year. This calendar is worth the money, if only for the fact that your child will get small snapshots of information that can later be connected to something they study in school or read in a book, or see on television, or hear in the lyrics of a song! Upon receipt of this product, our first task (at the request of our 10 year old) was to go through and look at the information logged for all of our family dates (bdays, anniversaries, etc.). We had a great time just looking at the pictures and captions for almost 1/2 an hour. To date, our only disappointment is that for Nov. 19, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was ommitted. However, Sadat & Begin's peace talks were certainly crucial to our world, so we had an excellent conversation about that subject. AND some correlations to what impact the Civil War had on America as we know it today. Overall, this is a great resource and certainly meets or exceeds it's own PR.

Review for The Learning Calendar

The Learning Calendar is a great piece of work. History is fascinating and this product makes it fun to learn. I would like to see more scientific data, biology, interesting chemical facts etc covered. When the year is over, perhaps it would be a good idea to be able cut the day cards into study cards. It's hard because on the other side there are the following month's facts. Otherwise, I love the product. Keep up the good work. A Happy Customer.

As a homeschooler I find this calendar to be a wonderful addition to our projects & educational pursuits. The children enjoy looking up the historic scientific fact of the day, and it is typically something about which they know little or nothing--which leads to wonderful discussions! I only wish there were more experiments in the calendar--definitely needs one good hands-on item per month. We made the apple mummies in January, and they didn't produce quite the results we were hoping for. February...no experiment. Still, it's a great item--large enough for the kids to read from easily. Thanks.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter but have to say that my 51 year old husband couldn't put it down on Christmas Day. He quizzed myself and my daughter throughout the day and would read us the different trivia. I found the information in this calendar to be very unique compared to other trivia type books I have read. It covers a variety of subjects, is interesting, and fun. I think teachers would greatly appreciate having this in their classroom. It would be of interest to both boys and girls and even adults. I would even like to see a daily Learning Calendar so I can tear off a page each day and tuck it in with my daughter's lunch box so she could share and have fun with her friends. I highly recommend this item and look forward to buying future editions.

It's a little advanced for her since she doesn't get all the references, but it's a great conversation starter, and she loves checking it every day. It's a great introduction to science and history. I think she'll be able to understand the 2010 science theme more than the 2009 inventions theme so we're looking forward to flipping the page to the new year.

My 12 year old grand-daughter loved this gift. She enjoys keeping track of days and events, and checks a calendar each day. This calendar has a different fact to learn every day to make things even more interesting. Sixteen months are included in the calendar, making it even better. She didn't have to wait until January 1 to start using it.

It can be challenging to find educational products that will interest both of my sons, ages 5 and 11. This calendar has become a fun thing for them to look at together in spite of their age difference. I do wish the pages were a little thicker so that the overall product was sturdier.

It has been great so far. I wish I had it since January so we would have more use out of it. I liked it so much, I bought an additional one for my son's teacher who is in a magnet school, and I use mine to homeschool the other boys. She reads the fact for the day, and incorporates it into the students morning writing lesson. I do wish there were different grade levels of fun facts depending on the age group of the child - like 4-6, 6-10, etc.

The daily descriptions of past history were very educational. The only thing that I was disappointed in is that the calendar was already four months old, it began in August 2007. I don't remember seeing anywhere that the calendar ran from Aug 2007 to Dec 2008.

I have gotten this calendar every year since 2003, and still love the daily events listed. I liked the heavier paper stock and staple-binding of previous years; the paper of this year's edition is too lightweight, and doesn't have the same high-quality feel. Would appreciate it if they could switch back to better paper.

I spoke with my brother yesterday and will be ordering another soon for my neice(11). My husband was the one to open the package and start reading The Learning Calendar ... It was hard to get it from him to hang it up... LOL! Personally I prefer to read each day as it comes (and not read ahead) -- It's fun!!

This is our fourth year getting the Learning Calendar and we love it. My girls look at it each day to see what interesting thing happened in history. I also see them looking ahead to the coming months because they can't wait to see what else has happened in history. It really makes history come alive for them. We did notice that this year the paper is a little thinner than before making the calendar a little more fragile. However, the content is still entirely worth the purchase price.

I rated this a 3 because of the use for my family currently - with a 2 & 4 year old boy, they are not as interested in the history/info yet. I also wish there was more room in the date to write events down. I like and will use the craft ideas given in most months. As a former high school history teacher this is a great resource for a classroom. It is eye catching for the meandering student to browse through.

it's a very good learning tool. kids find it interesting and gives them a chance to look up knowledge that they don't know yet. it's a good way to encourage kids learn new things. kids are naturally curious and specially interested in find out what happened before or in the history on their birthdate so that's another bonus for them. each day gives just enough of information to learn or know if they are interested to know more or dig deeper they can also go online to find out more interesting topics too. we enjoy the calendar very much.

I homeschool 2 boys age 7 & 10. We haven't had the calender very long, but it seems to be working for us. As they are eating breakfast we discuss what the calender says for that day. The basketball entry prompted lots of interest and we looked up more information. Some of the other entries weren't as interesting to my boys at their ages. Perhaps if you decide to expand you could do calenders that are more focused toward specific interests or ages.

This calendar is full of information! It's fun to have a factoid to read each day, and spark conversations with the kids. The only problem is, most of the daily facts don't spark a lot of conversation, at least not with my kids! (For instance, Richard Nixon's birthday didn't get a big reaction.) I would prefer to read about events, even obscure/trivial events, that somehow tie into or increase understanding of life today. Overall, though, it's always nice to have another source of information and ideas, so I would recommend this calendar.

It's hard to judge on "Play Value" of this item since this calendar is more of a learning tool, but not a toy. I purchased total of 3 calendars: one - for my daughter's (she is 10) personal use and other 2 we gifted to her school for classroom uses. I hope teachers will implement information on these calendars into their daily classroom activities, so kids can learn something new on the daily bases.

Great tidbits about everything. The message of the calendar is global and touches science, nature, and responsibility as Earth's caretaker. There is space that surrounds the month's name. I hope a future edition would use up the space to house one large image that would emphasize or synthesize some of the factoids. The month's name could easily be printed in the bottom blank Margin instead of on the top.

The Learning Calendar 2011

Gave this calendar to my 5-1/2yr and Almost-11-year old granddaughters. An hour and a half later I realized that they, and my 11-1/2-year old grandson had been reading them almost since they had finished opening all of their remaining gifts! I consider this an amazing, across-the-board, equalizing education. I highly recommend the calendar...even for those children who cannot read really well yet. Just because they can't read doesn't mean they don't comprehend the content! Great product!

What a great way to spark a child's (or adult's) brain to think and ask questions and go deeper to learn more. And the subjects are so varied that this calendar will hit on the natural interests of any child so that they broaden their range of knowledge. Given the state of public education in this country, we need SOMETHING that encourages real learning, not test-taking! And this calendar will also start good conversations with parents and grandparents. I am looking forward to hearing my grandkids tell me all the fascinating things they will be taking in every day.

Too much detail?
Posted 12/19/2010 by Martha Kearns

The calender looked like it was chock full of information....and it was. There is so much going on for every given day, that it's difficult to take it all in. My son has zeroed in on a couple of pictures that he found interesting, but the rest has just been a bit overwhelming. In addition, there is no room to use it as an actual calender, so it's difficult to indicate special dates on it....or otherwise make it relevant for him on a day-to-day basis.

The calendar is fantastic in terms of information. I think older children would be able to appreciate it more than the younger ones. But I read it and if I see something that my 3 and 6 year olds can relate to, I let them know in words they can understand. Then, they ask me questions, and more questions, and more questions....so watch out!...and know your history, science etc.! You will get quizzed.

The Learning Calendar was not what I expected, but perhaps I did not pay enough attention before ordering. It wasn't attractive, and had too much information on one page. Would be better to have a few items each month then every single day. Much of the information was obscure. More attractive and color photos needed. I was not happy with calendar, probably will not display.

The Calendar is a perfect gift even if the child cannot read yet. So many interesting facts. It's like a collection of delicacies for young minds where they can pick and choose those things of their particular interest. I found the Calendar to be especially stimulating and informative! The fact that it begins a few months before the year ends is a plus -- that should be "highlighted" in the description as this was a most pleasant surprise. Information about The Learning Calendar
Posted 12/17/2009
Rating: 3

Lots of information! Is it all "real science"? One problem: content is aimed at 10-12 year-olds. The picture on the cover of the calendar is of a 2-3 year old and therefore not appealing to this 10-12 year old set--especially boys. Also I was not aware that it started in August of 2009 seems odd. It would be simpler to have a regular 12-month calendar year. Good to have so many mentions of women but please be more selective- i.e.- Mary Austen was a great writer but makes no sense to have her used in a science calendar. Also please don't refer to women scientists as "girls." And although I am picky, I would buy next year.

Yeah, I'm not that impressed with the calendar. It got great reviews which is why I ordered it but so far it is more history than science. It's random facts that are interesting but not lasting. I home school and my girls love science but this doesn't add to our curriculum. We don't remember to look at it every day.
August through December 2009 months are a recap of the previous 2009 theme of Innovations, Inventions, and Ideas, in case you missed the 2009 calendar. The Spectacular Science data begins on January 1, 2010.

This calendar is crowded with very small print (I would think the font size is about 5-8). That combined with the specialized information makes it a mediocre choice for kids in the lower grades (below fourth grade). I would not recommend this calendar for young children.

The Smartest Calendar Ever Made!
Posted 2/18/2008 by Jennifer Rodriguez
Rating: 5

Years ago I had considered homeschooling my children and purchased this calendar. My children and I loved to read the daily history. We even did the research together on the daily topics. When we moved, we moved to a better school district so I have allowed my children to attend school. We came across the old calendar the other day and my daughter (now 10 & a straight A student) asked me "Whatever happened to the calendar company that made this calendar?" She had recalled the fun we used to have together while researching the daily topics. We were both excited to see after searching the web that it was still in production and we had to purchase it! My younger daughter (now 7) is looking forward to participating in our daily learning. Each morning they read the "day in history..." and talk about it during breakfast. When they come home from school they quickly finish their homework and look-up the topic on the computer before they go to sleep. They have so much fun I don't think they realize that they are learning! THANK YOU for continuing to produce this product! It is a great learning tool for children and a great conversation starter for families!

We love our Learning Calendar. In order for everyone to get a chance to read it, we found the best place to hang it is in the bathroom next to the toilet. All it takes is 1 minute to read the daily detail. You'd be amazed to hear some tidbit of information come up in future conversations. Also, little notes about who was born when (like Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1841) help put history in context as my children learn about other events happening during that time period.

I love love love this calendar. We were purchasing it before you were putting it out and were very sad to hear that it might be going away for good. So you can imagine my excitement when I learned you were going to take over producing this. I am a homeschool Mom and am pregnant with my 3rd right now. I can guarantee you we will purchase it until she is through high school, so another 18 years guaranteed if not more! I hope you continue to put it out!

The learning calendar gives the yearly calendar I need for every day. It gives me information I enjoy learning about. So many things happen every day and in our busy lives we go on not paying attention on whats going on around us. Also I sometimes surprise my co workers with the items I learn each day. I had a co-worker ask me "ok james, what happened today?". I love the calendar. Enough said.

I had been looking for a calendar for work and stumbled onto this one. I teach middle school and find it great for work. There are those occasions when you need an extra "bit" to fill in those last few minutes of class and this is great because there is something for every day. The topics are varied enough that there is something for everyone. AND... if your evaluator happens to be in the room it is a cross-curriculum integration tool! Even if I didn't use it at work, it provides a nice bit of trivia to be able to spout out most any day.

The trivia and information provided almost daily, along with the experiments provide learning and fun for kids and adults alike. As an educator and mother of girls, Science Technology Engineering and Math are all areas that we want to promote and nurture early on. This calendar provides high quality tools and information to support STEM learning early on. I hope Fat Brain will continue to produce this calendar, and possibly to add other content-area versions each year.

Good product

I love the concept--something stimulating and interesting or new every day. Seems to encourage questions and suggest further activities. I wish it had been updated (three of the months had already passed), but the information there is still useful. My 6-yr. old grandson is especially pleased that it focused on science--he is into ecology and the natural world in a big way, and there are not a lot of activities out there for him. I'd rate it a 4.5

Learning Calendar-Great Resource!!!
Posted 9/6/2009 by Michele V
Rating: 4

This is a great aditional resource for teachers of any type. As homeschoolers, we like to use the entries as a starting point for some of our activities. The entries on the calendar are interesting and can easily be used as a "Fact for the Day", an addition to a particular theme study, or fun for trivia enthusiasts. It's money well spent. I also keep copies from previous years for future use.

This is a great calendar for a teacher or parent who loves to keep up on facts! I am a 1st grade teacher, and some of the items/date activities are a little too complicated. This would be excellent for 2nd grade all the way up to high school!

My 8 year old daughter wanted to buy a calander. We looked at ALOT of them. This one however was the first she'd looked at and it stuck with her. Because of the holidays and bad weather it took a while to be delivered. But boy when it did she lit up. She reads it everyday and shares what she has learned at the dinner table every night. A+ from us!

After reading several reviews that it was good for homeschooling, I went ahead and bought it the calendar for my niece. I give it four stars instead of five because the little history fact on the date my niece opened it to was about death and destruction. I'm not sure how appropriate that is for kids, but then again, maybe my niece is below the recommended age group.

This is not really a toy but a learning, inspirational tool that any one could use. Hopefully it will spark a desire to learn more about individuals who were creative and lived full lives in their time, never standing still or being static. A great memory jogger.

The calendar is great. It's loaded with lots of interesting, little known facts that really stretch my child's knowledge base. On the downside, I had to staple the calendar back together once; it was too heavy to hold with the original small staples in the middle fold.

We have had The Learning Calendar in our home for the past 3 years and we all love it! Each year being a different theme helps keep the calendar fresh. It hangs in our kitchen and we often stop and read it during meal prep. It has started more than one dinner conversation. Great facts & layed out well. Our son is especially interested in this year's "gross" theme.

We try to get this every year, had the science one, earth & recycle one, but this is by far the best! Having 2 boys (11 and 7) they love anything disgusting! It's a great age. But, everyone is excited to see what's gross about each day, and sometimes they get carried away and continue to read on. Would order again.

The Learning Calendar is AWESOME. The added scratch N sniff is a great bonus. I got one for home and one for my sons 3rd grade class- they love it. Its interactive for impromptu's, questions, research and overall facinating for all ages- all the adults that looked at it could not put it down until the entire calendar was read.

Don't quite know how to answer the "plays with it" question. This was a present to my grandkids. The 9-year-old sat down and read it from January to December over a couple of days. She read the parts that she found interesting out loud to the family. It now is in a central place for all to reference. This calendar will now be a yearly present to the family.

Lots of information is available from each daily entry. This is the third year I have purchased The Learning Calendar for my grandson. I was unsure of this calendar because it was "gross" but after reading many of the entries, I found it not to be too gross. Many useful bits of information are given and even though I cringed a little over others, they were also informative. My grandson seems to like the calendars and the information he learns.

We have purchased the Learning Calandar every year as it has been filled with new facts and tons of Learning. This year I purchased it for my son's classroom that is for Higher functioning Special Needs Children. After I received it and flipped through the pages I decided not to give it to the classroom because I felt much of the content was not appropriate for classroom discussion. I suppose I should have been alerted by the title. I just didn't it to be soooooo gross. Very disappointed.

Gave these calendars as Christmas gifts to nephews, ages 9-11 (boys, of course) who loved them! It's nice to give something that will last far beyond the holiday season, and these offer a year's worth of entertainment...Totally gross entertainment that the boys' parents could probably have lived without, but that's what makes being an aunt so fun!

I ordered the Learning Calendar for my daughter to give to her teacher for Christmas. She is in the fourth grade and I thought her teacher had the personality to really enjoy this...plus she has two young sons! When it came, my daughter opened it and started reading...with comments like ewe and cool. Well it only took her five minutes to decide she was not giving this gift away...she wanted to keep it!! I have a feeling we will be learning quite a few 'gross' things this coming year!! We give it a thumbs up!!

Actually, I bought it for my grandson for Christmas. Yep, get your shopping done early and there are a lot of great stuff here. Reading though the parts of the calendar I can see with out opening the package I can tell that he will have a more than great time doing the activities and or just learning new things. Of course, it will probably drive my daughter and son-in-law nuts like the other stuff that is similar that they have already gotten but, they even tell me that it puts him ahead in his age group and seems to grasp things faster in school. Its just a fun way to learn.
