Leonardo da Vinci designed the first self-propelled cart capable of moving without being pushed or pulled manually. The precursor to the modern automobile was most likely used during stage performances. It has three wheels and a steering column. The device moves via spring-loaded cams near the wheels. As the springs uncoil the stored power is transferred to the driving wheels using a set of gears.
The scientific genius of Leonardo da Vinci is brought to life through these 10 articulated models. The inventions that inspired these snap-together replicas are taken from the pages of Da Vinci’s priceless and awe-inspiring notebooks. All models are made of plastic and require no special tools. Manuals are very educational and teach how these inventions have evolved into what they are today.
As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 8 years of age.
This toy was much more difficult to construct than it should have been. The cheap plastic pieces do not fit well together (some didn't fit together at all). Once constructed, the toy does "work", you have to crank the wheels far too many times to get it to work. The gears click very roughly against each other.
If the Self-Propelled Cart is too archaic, you'll find our customer service a true modern convenience. Visit the Returns & Exchanges Center for assistance. We contacted our customer promptly.
Review for Leonardo DaVinci Kits - Self-propelled Cart
Posted 12/20/2012 by Israel Galindo
I bought this as a present for my adult engineer son. Makes a nice desktop toy/display. He played with it for a good while before putting it on display. Lots of fun gears and has a nice "steampunk" look to it, which my son liked.
It is a really fun concept and the movements are pretty interesting. The assembly was a little stiff in some parts especially putting the wheels on the axle. Will be looking at other toys in the line as well.
