As one of the top online toy retailers, we have access to unprecendented quantities of product review data. One of the key ways that we use this data is by associating our products to the specific ages and genders of the kids who are playing with them. Whereas most retailers must rely upon manufacturer suggested ages (i.e. 3+), we take actual customer usage and share it with you here so that you can choose the perfect toy or game.
But how does this help me? You can use these graphs as a general measure of it's appropriateness for a given age and gender. While this information is generally accurate, it should not be used as an absolute answer. For instance, many dinosaur toys are purchased for boys, however, that doesn't mean that it's inappropriate for a girl who happens to like dinosaurs.
NOTE: The orange color in the charts above indicate ages that are LESS than the manufacturer suggested age. Please purchase at your discretion if your child is younger than 8 years of age.
Identified Special Needs Challenges: Aspergers,
Sensory Integration Disorder
"This gift is perfect for an Aspergers child! My brilliant 8 year old nephew was so excited to receive this he didn't want to open any more gifts. He has other Perplexus puzzles and will often use them before bed to wind down. They capture his focus and allow him to concentrate for a long time while having tons of fun. Fat Brain Toys will be my first stop when shopping for him in the future because of the awesome special needs lists. So wonderful!"
Identified Special Needs Challenges: Autism
"I purchased this product (in addition to the other Perplexus products) for the students in my Academic Resource class who are all identified on the autism spectrum. The students, ages 12-14, enjoy puzzles, especially those with a strong visual component. The Perplexus-Epic provides the visual stimulation they need and allows them to focus on solving a single task. They enjoy the challenge of the twists and turns and the game is non-competitive, except with themselves. They can play independently, but there is almost always someone else looking on and encouraging the player thus increasing their social interactions. "
Identified Special Needs Challenges: ADD/ADHD
"My son has ADHD and this toy allows him to spend his free time hyper-focusing on this fun activity. He craves it. My other son is not special needs and neither is my husband and they both love the toy too. They seem to be able to put it down easier than my son with ADHD."
Identified Special Needs Challenges: Aspergers
"Great tool for especially gifted young man (8, Aspergers) with advanced math, engineering, spacial interests. Simple enough to not require parental assistance. Complex enough to hold his interest for hours. "
Identified Special Needs Challenges: ADD/ADHD,
"I actually bought this for my office and decided to keep it for my autistic grandson."
Product review of Perplexus - Epic

We bought this for our 11 y/o and he really enjoys it. His grandmother bought him something very similar but a different brand and he solved it rather quickly. Perplexus Epic is more challenging but not frustrating. He doesn't play with it constantly but when he does bring it out he works on it for a long period of time. I'm definitely glad that I went with the epic over the regular one considering how quickly he solved the other puzzle ball.
When playing with the easier version that my kids had, my dad couldn't put it down. He looked to love this one, but the ball seemed too big for the hole between #19-20. We're going to exchange it for another, and assume the fun will continue. Its great as it has a 'play in' entry point around #34 -- so we still moved on from the sticking point.
I purchased this for my 10 year old son as a gift. However, I should have bought one for my husband as well! My husband played with it for hours on Christmas morning and wouldn't put it down. It is a great toy that really makes you think but without feeling like you're in school. The only downside is we've gotten the ball stuck between the maze and the ball a few times. Wish there was just a little bit more space so that wouldn't happen. Other than that, I would recommend buying this for any kid over 8.
